Now that the dust has settled, which version of 3s do you recommend to someone?

It’s 2013, a new player wants to play this game starting fresh. Assuming they don’t have an arcade near, which non arcade version do you suggest they use?  For fairness, let’s assume that online does not count.  Judge strictly by the offline.

online edition because the few things that are better about PS2 are non-issues to anyone new (arcade music, old hud, etc.), and encouraging someone to steal the rom off the internet isn’t exactly a good look for 3S support. and emulators don’t have training mode unless you use cheats or whatever those workarounds are.<br><br>also how do you delete posts on this srk<br>

<div>As far as timing differences between emulation and 3SOE I don’t feel much of a difference. </div><div><br></div>Online: GGPO.<div><br></div><div>If you want a good training mode: 3SOE. </div><div><br></div><div>That is the only real plus to 3SOE is its training mode and save state feature. The online is horrendous, the lack of filters makes it impossible to find anyone worth a damn and a vast majority of people (like 99%) playing on Console are either from SF4 or play the game like JROD. I’m curious if the oft-delayed patch will improve the online but I’m keeping my expectations low. </div><div><br></div><div> There are ways to set up a ghetto training mode in MAME but you cannot record the dummy at all.</div>

3SOE for training mode, I suppose. Even then, I don’t know if I’d recommend it for local multiplier because there are still some annoying bugs like music getting cut out mid-match.<br>

<div>oe.</div><div><br></div><div>but with the suggestion that if possible, you hook it up to a crt tv. </div><div><br></div><div>if you can’t do that really, i guess anything doesnt matter too much. crt is always preferable, then lcd, if your lcd will accept a vga signal, that can also be better in some cases specifically with tvs. </div><div><br></div><div>it makes a significant difference.</div><div>emulation on an lcd is the bottom. </div><div><br></div><div>ps2 or oe i dont really think theres enough of a difference to recommend someone. i guess if they have a ps2 already, have a ps2 stick, etc. its a no-brainer and vice versa.</div>

OE. <div><br></div><div>PS2 fucked up my timing hard when I went from arcade to that. But make sure you play OE on a CRT.</div>

CRT or bust.

GGPO on the PC.

<font face=“Arial, Verdana” size=“2”><span style=“line-height: normal;”>If you play offline quite a lot then you’re better off playing OE, i do play on GGPO as well purely to play certain players that are not on OE (zztop) but it does mess your timing up a bit. if i’m playing in a tournament (about once a month) i try to avoid GGPO for a few days</span></font>

You mean, if he plays offline 3soe? FBA is more similar to arcade.<div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div>

Well depending where he lives it’s more likely he’ll be playing OE offline? Tho isn’t the speed of OE closer to Arcade than FBA? correct me if i’m wrong but doesn’t FBA run it 1.1x faster?

OE + CRT = best training mode.

emulated on PC for that tool you can use to see meters you normally couldn’t seen in-game.

I don’t know about online play nowadays.

<br><div>QFT, I’ve played extensively on emu now, and even with VGA to a syncmaster, it has input lag from hell… but that could be because I’m using Win7, even with all the Aero stuff disabled and USB poll rates increased it still feels… sluggish… (though I think the USB increase only effects mice…)</div><div><br></div><div>I hear it’s better on XP though, any truth to this?</div><div><br></div><div>The “charge” meter viewing is too amazing though, so I’ll continue with switching back and forth.</div>

my experience is the same as yours telesniper.  and yeah I’ve heard the same about XP but have no idea if it’s true.

yeah i dont see how anyone would think fba is better honestly except for seeing data and stuff.<div><br></div><div>it’s noticeably quicker. going from cps3 to fba with like 5-10 mins in between, things that were super easy to react and parry seemed much quicker (alex’s slash elbow was one).</div><div>i don’t think theres any setup where emu > oe on crt as far as inputs and speed.</div><div><br></div><div>fba might be more similar in more esoteric ways though like how it handles certain specific situations and inputs.</div>

cool doublepost

VGA cable on an HD monitor obviously will have input & visual lag. That’s a CRT’s cable.<br>HDMI cable on an HD monitor, does not have input lag on any game, either 2D or 3D. It’s the cable that shows your HD monitor capablities. Not to mention, faster data transfer and high res support, necessary for new Video Cards. You can google it to find more specific info.<br>Any visual delay has nothing to do with emulator, as well. It depends on your monitor (quality, manufacturer), your resolution (native HD resolutions ex. 1920x1080p is what an HD monitor displays better and clear, especially the text) and of course, your 3D Video Card (bandwith, high res support).<br><br>I am on Windows 7 64Bit. I run FBA emulator on 1920x1080p full screen. Offline, my inputs register instanty, my game controller is responsive, durable. The emu version runs equally well as it did on my old build running Windows XP on CRT (VGA) monitor. <br>Aero Theme is always disabled, because it does affect any application running in the background.<br><br>My PS3 3S Online Edition runs also equally well  and I’ve never had any issue adjusting my timing for combos. I did not bother to buy a better pad for the console, though.<br><br>I will not vote on any of these, FBA, PS2, 3SOE cause I enjoy the game equally on all of them. If I had to pick my less favorite version, I would pick PS2. The timing for combos or hit confirms seems somewhat off.<br><br>Online, PC GGPO uses your connection and your CPU processor to run the game at solid 60 fps. So, frameskipping and ggpo delay differ on builds and connections. Even at the best builds and connections, you need to adjust your timing for combos/hit confirms.<br>3SOE online experience depends on the network (PSN/XBL) and your connection more than pc ggpo. <br>

<br><div>My Syncmaster is a CRT… through VGA I can feel a massive difference in executing combos compared to OE on CRT. For example, when I buffer dashes in between Fukiages with Makoto, I have to input the second towards sooner on FBA, but I can have a bigger delay between the two towards inputs than OE. Like it’s more strict to buffer dashes in OE, but the timing on when to fully execute the dash is different.</div><div><br></div><div>I play other games that require very precise inputs and with them, there is no delay on my Syncmaster, the culprit has to be FBA in my case. I don’t know if it’s caused by my hardware, my FBA settings, or what… But for me, if you had a CRT monitor hooked to both OE and (my) FBA and let me play, I could tell you which was which based on the timings. This is why I’ll most likely never touch GGPO on FBA, it feels sluggish and probably has to be on my end.</div><div><br></div><div>BTW, another thing FBA has WAY over on OE is multiple Save States… that is seriously useful for setting up specific situations. Would have been awesome if in OE, you could hold down Select and hit a button to activate a different Save State. At least then we could have 6 different ones…</div>

If your hardware is outdated (Dual Core, 800Mhz RAM), you should not run Windows 7 32 or 64 bit. They are very heavy on system resources, like CPU, RAM. I would not even try Windows 8 on my current build, even though my CPU and ram meet the requirements.<br>You can try different settings on FBA, ex. reduce full screen resolution, Switch Blitter to direct 3D/direct draw, disable all filters, reduce sound to 22kz and see if that makes any difference.<br><br>Yes, the multiple save states feature comes handy. The latest FBA versions also support cheats, if I am not mistaken.<br>I personally find the save replay feature the most useful one. You can save a combo, a set up or anything you tried into a very small file and watch it anytime.<br><br>About online, you should stick to 3SOE. At least, it worked better in your case. If you play often online, 3SOE is your best option.<br>
