I am back on the SF train, while IV was great I couldn’t get past the speed and to be honest vanilla IV barely held my attention. It wasn’t until Super that I bought the game. I understand some of the criticism but despite the lack of an arcade mode there is really nothing to complain about. Can’t wait for the future seasons.
I’m loving it. I don’t get the anger over the lack of content, its SF, its always been barebone. You can argue its 2016 and it doesn’t cut it, but straight up, as a new SF, this is awesome.
I think the game itself is very good.
Definitely feels more like the older games than SF4 ever did. And no matter how you look at it, top flight matches are more exciting for it.
Before we talk about depth though, lets wait and see what some of the larger tournaments yield in that regard. Some people appear to think that this game will close the gap between the pro eastern and western scene… Perhaps that’s why there’s a more lenient combo system and clearer focus on attack ranges (‘foosies’).
And for that concession alone, I’m eager to see how things pan out.
So what’s bad about the game?
Everything else…
The game was clearly released in an unfinished state. Even some of the character models look like they can all benefit from another 3 months in development…
The home screen looks like a slapdash piece of shit. There’s no arcade mode. Challenges took a walk. Lobbies/lounges can only have two people in them. And that’s not to say anything about the overall online experience. How many recent, high profile releases can you recall making it to the shelves in this kind of state?
EA’s Sim City is the only one I can think of.
Look at Guilty Gear Xrd for example, and what Namco’s doing with Tekken 7. Presentation of the highest standard, with the added bonus of an arcade release.
But lets not forget that this is just as much Sony’s fault, as it is Capcom’s.
I done bought the game, but it should have been cheaper out the gate.
Next time I end up buying a product in this state at a certain price though, I’ll demand a refund, pirate the fucking game or, more sensibly, wait for the inevitable price drop.
Many others with less of an interest in the genre have probably done just that.
And you know, Capcom and Sony will certainly deserve it.
If you think these are problems with SFV, then you might as well have a problem with SF in general.
Then again, you probably think that 3S is shallow because the only combo Chun needs is low forward into super.
A week and a half in, I’m FINALLY starting to face more characters that aren’t Ken, Ryu or Nash.
I predict that SF5 Cammy is going to be the equivalent to SF4 “Shoryuken all the time” Ken. I just played a Cammy that made it all the way up to 2100 points just by spamming random specials and burning her CA the moment she got it. And the shameful thing is, I had little enough experience against SF5 Cammy that she almost beat me. She seems like THE newb-killer.
I’m so excited about where they are going from here. This is good game that’s only going to get better.
When you’re at the bottom, you can only go up…or stay there.
