"Now, face the mighty Bison!" - Video Critique Thread

I didn’t really watch your vids that closely but stop doing EX Scissors so much lol. That shit is Ultra Punishable. EX psycho Is ultra punishable by a few characters too, Balrog come to mind, but if you want to use and EX after a blocked SK use Psycho.

I’ll post up vids from the next tourney I’m going to on the 21st. I’ll also try to record some stuff when my local crew meets up for SF in the future.

Couple of comments:

-Good use of slide to punish his backwards flip. However, you were using it a little too much. A poorly space slide can cost you an entire match. Typically, you should only use it to punish something (like catching the backflip), or to move forward after an untechable knockdown. The slide can be safe on block if you do it from max distance. However, even that is pretty risky, as the move takes a while to come out and is easy to counter (good shotos will srk that shit on reaction).

-Against Vega’s wall dives, you went for the walk and block approach. This has some risk though, as you can still eat a walldive if you guess wrong. The more effective way to counter this is to jump back and do an early roundhouse. If done right, you’ll knock them out of the air. Some Vega players that I’ve played have tried to counter this by doing the attack right after leaving the wall. If they start doing that, just wait. They can’t control the dive after the attack, and doing it early enough means that they have to guess if you’re gonna jump or not, so if you wait it out they will land without hitting and you get a free punish.

-Watch out for whiffed df roundhouse (the little hop kick), since a lot of vega players use that to set up throws.

-Avoid using scissors at close range. Vega’s cr.jab and cr.strong are really good, and will stuff scissor kicks on startup. At that range, you should use your pokes to beat him, so cr.short, cr.fwd, and roundhouse.

-Every time you get an untechable knockdown on vega (slide, throw, ex headstomp or ultra) follow up with a safe jump. Basically, the jump in should be hitting as soon as they get up. Vega’s only option for escaping this is to flip kick out. Your roundhouse can punish the short flip, and slide will catch the long one.

@mikehascookies

Thanks for the feedback dude, I’ll definetly use that advice for next time

Here are some videos of me and my boy Sole10 playing.
I wanted to see what kinda tips/critiques all you Bison pros could give me from the matchup.
It’s Ryu vs Bison, which is always a tough matchup, at least one I can’t sleep on.
So any help would be great. Good Quality on the vids too.

Just a few things to note on:
-When you punish a whiff dp, instead of just knee press, do a mk xx RH knee press. For that extra little bit of damage.
-Probably an accident on your part but you tried to combo a jump in roundhouse into a slide.
-Don’t do the slide from point blank. It’s unsafe.

  • You could get away with it this time but against good Ryu’s, they can time their fireballs to fuck up your Devil Reverse spam.
-Don’t jump in on Ryu wakeing up when he’s got meter and ultra. Chances are you’ll eat a DP into ultra.
-Stop spamming Headstomp. You got away with it this time, your opponent could block them but wasn’t too wise on how to punish but a good Ryu will punish you for it.
-Learn the spacing and timing to get your EX knee presses through fireballs.
-Learn how to dash cancel out of a focus after the hit.
-Work on your timing for punishing a jump in with Ultra

That’s just a few things I noticed. Some may not apply but I’m just going off what I saw in some of those videos.

thanks a lot man! i’ll have to work on those things.

Just a few things I noticed:

  • try to keep pressure on your opponent, get slightly within poking distance. A lot of the time you were fullscreen away. Trying to DR or HS on him at that distance can be devastating (DP fadc into ultra, yay.) You can try FADC (dash forward) if at a safe distance to get in on him or EX SK to punish a fireball.

  • Stop sliding so much, ESPECIALLY from that distance.

  • Find better opponents, they will keep you on your toes instead of letting you get lazy with your bison.

  • Stop trying to jump in so much. Stay grounded against Ryu.

i was going to give some feedback but Valaris said everything I was thinking. follow his advice and try and be more loose and flexible. execution is pretty important too and i didnt really see any Bnbs. lastly take better stock of your options! you had a match in the bag but Ryu ended up getting in your face and taking your life down enough to the point where if you ate another bnb from him you might have lost it. you could have just wakeup EX PC’d him for the chip win early on before he began mixing you up more. this is match #6. BTW this match is good, the second round you played well and the third was good too aside from execution. try and play more like this! notice how differnt it is from the first few vids. you kept him in the corner sometimes and yes you crossed him up but it actually made sense and is exactly waht i would have done for the mixup. you land from the nj roundhouse at perfect distance for crossup so it made sense.

edit: noticed some more things. Jump in fierce is kind of awesome because its misleading as to how far away you can hit with it. you can jump in from a deceptively far distance (floaty jump so yo ucan kind of see it coming but…) and actually still hit your opponent in the gut or even the knees. the problem is any cr. kick wont reach far enough to combo. your longest reaching cr. poke is cr. strong so when you’re jumping in with fierce from a distance, use cr. strong to link into scissors. it does more damage and you can take advantage of landing jump ins like that from far away.

you got lucky with those jump ins but i could tell yo uwerent just doing it randomly. you have to take advantage of those situations especially with a combo as easy as jump in fierce, poke xx scissors.

1:48 is sick. he let you jump in but still, awesome.

thanbks everyone, ima hit the training room and work on alot of that stuff you mentioned

s.HK whiffed tatsu after they pass you.

Hey everyone, here are some videos of me playing. I feel that my Bison is coming along pretty nicely, at least it looks that way when I compare this footage to older videos. Please leave any constructive criticism you can!

Just because ihave to go, BUT I’LL BE BACK FOR YOU! I wanna say relook at your videos. Do you see that the reason you take so much damage is because you keep jumping in? Replace that HK to MK. Alot of Random EX Headstomps. Work on execution. Other than that you did pretty well with baiting your guys in.

I gotta agree with ayo…u took way too much damage that the ryu player did not work for. No need to jump in/crossup an opponent when they in the corner, ill go more into detail when im out of class.

Ok im back and done with my evaluation with you Exceed.

Ryu/ Money Match:
Pros.

  1. Good job keeping him in the corner.
  2. Good use of HK

Cons.

  1. Way to much jump ins. You get clocked with the lp. srk and boom there’s a free ultra for him.

  2. You gotta save your bar man. Use it to go through fire balls or get out the corner. You use it on to many ex head stomps don’t land consistently.

  3. When he tatsu away from the corner, walk towards him while he’s in the air then slide before he lands. You’ll get him 100%

Balrog
Pros.

  1. Good cross ups. You need to do alot of that shit

Cons.

  1. You gotta start playing footsies. Your st. MK is god against him

  2. Read his jump ins and don’t jump towards him. Again you jump a whole lot and that brings you down. All these matches they took advantage of what you did and that’s why you lost as much as you did.

  3. Use your cr. mk/lk to beat almost everything he has to offer except ex head butt.

Overall.
I really don’t think these guys you beat know the match up really well because I know for sure if that happened at a tournament for me I’d be placing top all the time. You really need to utilize ground game because Bison sucks A2A.
So for you:
NO MORE JUMP INS.
LEARN MATCH UPS.
You’re playing to risky to compete so try and slow it down a bit.

GL

^ what he said.

you ate a lot of fireballs after cr. forwards from ryu, happens to me all the time but I don’t know why that shit makes me flinch even when I know its coming. You got lucky in your air to airs. So yeah like AyoChip said, stay more grounded, I know it can be tough with fireballs to worry about among other things, but you can do it. Other than that, yes your Bison is looking much better than the last time I saw you.

I wish I could take more videos of me playing but I don’t have a camcorder and the last time I tried recording up in Seoul I got hassled. Maybe I’ll use my regular camera because I get completely raped online. Korea is a small country and is really wired up, all of the competition I encounter is devastating and I really need some help because I’m running into yet another wall in my SF4 play.

Okay here we go…Ill say this again dont go for cross ups/jumpins when u got them cornered, just chill for a sec then apply st:rh, st:mk, and sk pressure while mixing in tick throw’s (back into the corner) as well.

Work on footsies especially against shotos (no jumping just cause u want to). Last but not least work on execution…u need to finish those bnb’s at least 85% of the time.

Imma be honest…ur tournament scene is pretty weak compared to others, but this is good since ur actively looking to improve, u should def be getting top 3 easily from now till SSF4.

I’d be williing to help u out…just send me a friend request if u wanna play.

Hey guys, thanks for all of the tips, I’ll definitely apply them and patch up the holes in my game.

The SF scene in Dallas is pretty healthy I’d say. There are 2 weekly gatherings that take place, and they’re on opposite ends of the DFW. The one I go to, named “Fight Club” is relatively new, as opposed to the other gathering, which has been going on for years and hosts the best players in Dallas. As a collective everyone is getting a lot better at Fight Club, and if anyone is in the Dallas area I’d recommend you check it out.

Here’s my Bison
Dissect.

Guruo

I commend you for taking his block strings. In my position just hearing the name Santhrax would mind fuck me. BUT Let’s erase name and look at game play yeah?

Pros.

  1. You called alot of his jump ins. Very good for you.

  2. I think your pressure game was pretty decent and you didn’t drop alot of your combos.

  3. Good ground game. GOOD, but it could be BETTER.

  4. Focusing fireballs to get through.
    Cons.

  5. I think a bit too much dashing? I had this problem once, only because I hadn’t played alot shotos at the time( weird, I know…), maybe you’re going through the same thing.

  6. Lack of pokes. You really gotta use Bison’s strengths and of course st. mk and st. hk are his best weapons especially against shotos. You know you can stuff most of his crap if you poke is pokes on reaction? Try looking for those, I’m still practicing it myself.

Overall:
I think you did fine job here. It’s sanford, but who cares you still did an exceptional job. Get your links down and take some more time to learn footsies.

I heard a phrase " Bison’s Footsies are Gold". Take it to heart yeah?

GL and next time post up a vid that’s not online. Let’s see how well you do there.

Crouching fierce beats the people’s elbow
corner that fool and switch between SK and roundhouses
make him scared to press buttons
when sagat uppercut FADC
i just teleport back
it eliminates the whole
is he gonna grab me or throw another uppercut question
plus if he does throw an uppercut
u can regulate his ass on the way down:wgrin:
