EDIT: Really secretly this was a PAIN for me as well I just always acted like it was no big deal because everyone quit playing Ken in vanilla. But after watching your vid of that matchup I SLAPPPP jump happy KENs now. Oh yeah and I’v been testing out PP on peoples wakeup, and not only does Ken have a DP he has a really strange getup animation so it doesn’t seem to work no matter what or the timing is funky.
Of course this is all IMO, so take it however you want. This is just what I think when I see your matches here.
Vs Chun…
You do a great job of footsies, really keep her at bay with s.mk. All I can really think of though is more c.mp, cause it combos into s.mk/s.hk and is specail cancellable. Plus its only I think a frame slower than s.mk and has really good range too. Other good things about c.mp is it is +3 on block so its good for frame traps and +6 on hit.
Vs Cammy…
You baited some DPs out of her when you had ultra and didn’t punish! Could of won some rounds much easier. Also s.hk stuffs her dive kicks very well, you prob knew that but it seemed like you were scared to throw it out for fear of DPs. But the Cammy player wasn’t looking for them because you didn’t give her a reason to really to doubt her dive kick rushdown. Also there were a couple of times when she backed off of you on your wakeup and you still did EX PC(she tagged you with ultra in one of the vids). When the game starts to get tense try to take that extra fraction of a second to ask yourself what might your opponent be feeling and thinking based off what you have done, I find that by asking myself this frequently in battle has landed me more damage overall.
Vs Guy…
I’m just starting to get to know this matchup, but what I do know is that you can’t let yourself get cornered against him! He has dirty corner pressure. Besides that I would say try to keep him on the ground because his stupid air grab is practically unavoidable. I’v had some success with c.mp>s.hk to keep him grounded. If Guy spams his elbow drop on you just out space him and punish with SKs and EX PC.
Sorry if I didn’t give you anything, this is just what I think when I watch your vids.
I saw the Asiandemon video. Why do you sit back so much? s.HK can stuff a lot of tiger shot and tiger knee start ups and it will force Sagat to back off towards the corner.
Have a bunch of videos from EVO APAC, if you wanna have a look and give me some critique.
From my own point of view though I think I dropped way too many combos (for competitive play) comes down to nerves a bit as I usually stay solid online/casuals.
you should have trolled Daigo with teleports. good shit though!!! I would have lost my cool!
it’s really hard to critique anyone playing Daigo money matches. I don’t see how anyone who isn’t used to playing the big names on a daily basis would even appear to be themselves. if i had to critique since its in the thread i’d say overall your main weakness was that you played a bad footsie game. dashing forward from improper ranges at improper times, never anti-airing and using pokes that seemed like you were just pushing buttons when he was somewhat in range rather than using your spacing and pokes to play mindgames and be prepared for his options at that distance. you also jumped in never when you should have and always when you shouldn’t. you jumped in on the ground but never jumped in off of a throw. Daigo knows without a doubt that Bison’s early jump in fierce will stuff all reversal DP’s from the proper angle and would have blocked, giving you a pressure opportunity. too many predictable EX PC escapes too. one round he was throwing fireballs at you knowing you weren’t buffering ultra. and you were devil’s reversing. you should have at least SHOWN you were buffering so that he’d lay off the zoning.
Hey guys been a long time Abel player but have always wanted to make Bison my main just never got around to it well now i am officially trying to achieve that goal of mine so i have started to make some videos of my Bison play and would love to hear from you guys any critique is appreciated
Yeah I wasn’t really on point with the ultra, trying to work on my reactions for it (and trying not to be twitchy about it either like the time I hit Daigo cause he dashed).
It’s hard to play your style against Daigo because he shows you things you usually don’t see, I can’t say I’ve been thrown out of many dash up attempts but every time Daigo grabbed me.
I guess it’s the easiest way to see what’s wrong with your game vs him.
I also asked him what he thought of my play style (we played around 9 or so times on the weekend) and he said that he found when I had the life lead I was great, but when I was down on life I didn’t play that well, said to work on my defense.
Would you be able to give some critique on the matches vs Robsux/Vindk8/Jacksmash? (the last three)
Against Flash’s boxer I think you ate too many jump ins, I’m not sure what you were trying to do but the best option when Balrog jumps at you like that from close is to block.
You also ran into a lot of damage from random back dashes, I get the feeling he knew you were uncomfortable with fighting him at close range so he would always follow up any blocked combo with a special that would hit you when you got away.
If you have an obvious punish like his whiffed EX headbutt you could follow up with something a lot more damaging than just scissor kick, and also a cancel from a scissor that you’ve hit generally has very little payoff.
Knock him down and start safe jumping him for free pressure, after any blocked dash you can immediately lk which will force him to block and also grant you free pressure - your whole purpose in this match up is to push Balrog into the corner where you can apply endless scissor pressure and he has to guess how to escape.
From watching a bit of your match vs the Sagat (it was loading really slow for me) I can see your weak against jump ins, your best bet should be to block them or try to anti air them early. You also had a few chances where you dropped your combos, like cross up j.mk (risky on Sagat) into two jabs into out of range throw - what you could have done is cr. lp st. lp cr.mk heavy scissors for some beefy damage on a confirmed combo.
If not you could have simply done cr. lp cr. lp cr. lp cr. lk medium scissors which is cake to confirm, and while not ideal it’s better than nothing.
EDIT: Ok watched the rest, I can say that the Sagat player was very “active” due to the fact that you didn’t make him scared to be so “active”. It’s a the theory that if he randomly does stuff, and you can’t punish him enough, then he will win. Against Shotos you really need to strike fear into them so that they think twice about anything, otherwise their damage payoff is much greater than yours and you will lose.
In regards to the High tiger shot, you could have caught if you were buffering earlier (well he shouldn’t have been able to fireball that much against you anyway from full screen).
nJ.MK works wonders against a jumping in Sagat, it is extremely difficult to advance against it if it’s thrown out early air to air, nJ.HK also works to stop tiger knees.
I’ll be having some money matches against one of the best Sagats in my area and I’ll upload it to give you an idea of how I play the match up, might not be perfect but I think it should help.
i can give you more specific critique later when im not lazy, but if you just picked him up you’re going to be BEASTLY with him in a month or two. your sense of the character is really good. it seems like you really get how he works. links are all on point, footsie are pretty good and overall just solid, already. you just need to learn matchups and punishes and you’ll be good to go.
I agree Laudadana (I hate spelling that). Your links are very crisp, and your fearless doing them against characters that have dps. My only critique is be careful about doing forward and rh sks in your combos because if you do drop a combo they can punish you after they see the lofthy animation.
Good consistency on your links. Very few drops. Also, good reads on the dps. A couple of things:
-You might want to try jumping in less. Bison as a VERY floaty jump, which makes anti-airing him fairly easy. That cammy player was letting you jump in un-contested, and there was a point at the end of the matchup against the rufus where you jumped that he could have popped ultra and caught you with it. Good player’s won’t let stuff like that slide.
-Against rufus dive kick pressure, standing short is your best defense. It’s fast, and has a high hitbox. You can option select it with a throw tech by plinking from short to jab.
-Ultra 1 is the better option in the rufus matchup. Against messiah kick, do the input for it as a reversal to the first part of the messiah kick. If he does nothing, the overhead, the sweep, or a delayed flip kick, the ultra will come out and beat it. If he does the lk followup immediately, you won’t get an ultra, and can still punish. Even if he fadc’s backwards, you can tag him with a st rh for free. Also, when the rufus popped ultra to try and chip you, you could do ultra 1 and it would beat it clean.
-Avoid doing the skull diver followup after headstomps against rufus (or any type of post headstomp mixup, for that matter). His jump rh is a very good counter to those, and can lead to a lot of damage. You got the damage/chip, now reset the spacing and continue to pressure with rh/fwd.
-As was already mentioned, try to avoid using scissors other than lk outside of combos unless you are trying to punish something, as they generally aren’t safe. It is possible to do safe (not even frames) mk scissors, but you have to learn the spacing for this.
-A minor critique, but if you stun someone after a long combo, going for a reset can net you more damage than following up with another combo. If you stun someone in the corner like you did that cody player, you can do a lvl 3 focus crumple, dash forward, wait until they fall to their knees, then do cr.lk xx lp psycho crusher. The lk will reset them, the lp crusher will cross under, and because of the corner proximity you will recover a split second before them. Follow up with short pressure, tick throw, etc.
Overall good stuff. Your Bison is already looking very clean. Once you get the matchups down, you’ll beast.
I know that a reset can potentially net you more damage, but in doing so you’re giving up your greatest advantage - the corner.
Bison’s corner pressure is amongst the strongest in the game, so I don’t think I’d ever try to go for a reset (which places me in the corner as well) in that situation.
Are you sure that works? I only got a (useless) kara throw when I tried this in practice, I have no idea how this is supposed to work in theory either.
You need to time it so that you press short~jab as soon as you come out of block stun. If the rufus player goes for a dive kick, the short input (the first one it should read) will give you a standing short. If they go for a throw, the second part of the input (the short+the jab) will let you tech. You have to make sure that you aren’t doing it too early, and aren’t pressing the short+jab at the same time.
If I do the s.LK~s.LP input I just get a throw (barely seeable, but it’s a s.LK kara throw I think). In practice mode it shows the input like that:
LP+LK
LK
I don’t know how I am supposed to get a s.LK that way, if he does a divekick instead I just whiff a throw and Rufus gets a free combo. I really don’t see how the game engine could possibly give me a s.LK + throw tech.
