Fuck yeah. ApologyMan vs. Coach Steve was off the hook!
So the pope select has been ravaging my mind and I’ve found one for Nova. Though, it requires some testing. Basically in training mode, it should be
:h: :l:
:uf:
then
:h: :l:
then :h: if they tech a throw in the air.
Adding an assist somewhere would perfect this in theory. So, I’ll outline a few scenarios when using this option select.
-
Lows
They get thrown. No biggie. -
Ground Throw
The throw gets teched and you plink away. The assist will punish them mashing H -
Jump
The first plink will cause you to dash jump, basically a normal forward jump with more momentum than usual. From there, you immediately plink a backwards dash. This will give you a throw. If teched, I think you can do a j.H. Otherwise, maybe j.L would be better. -
A distance away
I’m sure there are some characters with faster walk speed than Nova and will be at a distance at the 99 second fight. Again, the first plink will cause you to dash jump. The second plink however will cause you to dash backwards if they don’t jump and tech a throw. After that, you want to press j.H or j.L, whatever you feel like. This is to protect yourself from punishing you for jumping forward. Additionally, the assist somewhere should help out. -
The same thing as you
When both players are using this technique, they would both tech the throw and then plink away from each other… I think. This one will need testing.
I would have to see this in video to completely understand
I would but my camera setup and Plinks are terrible
I’ll see what I can do. In the mean time, I can confirm that scenario 2 will work as described.
The formatting of the inputs here kinda confuse me but I sort of understand what you’re trying to go for here. I actually use something similar that’s a less safe version but more offensive by forward plink dashing.
Yeah
I’m trying to figure out how the pope select is any better than just backwards plink + assist. The only advantage is that it’s usable in mixups.
So here’s a hypothetical. Let’s say you’re playing against Justin Wong and you open up his Wolverine off a throw, or an anti-air jab. Something you know you can’t kill off with just your bar. Do you:
- Pop X-factor and burn most of your bar to kill off Wolverine
- Snap Storm
- Snap Akuma
- Get knockdown and go for oki
I personally like option 3 - Akuma seems to be the real problem here, and even if you kill off Wolvie, Storm+Akuma is still terrifying. Plus, it screws with the order - anchor wolvie isn’t really where you want to be. What do you guys think?
Then you get Wong factored
Seriously, option 3 does sound good if your incoming is extremely tight
Dude, you get Wong Factored no matter who he has on anchor. But Akuma really is the money assist in that team, and screwing up the team order by placing Wolverine last also helps deal with that stupid THC.
I might be playing JWong at a tournament in a few weeks. Assuming I can justify dropping 200 bucks for travel expenses and more for a hotel room.
The real question is why are you not playing Nova Doom which would allow you to kill Kappa
lmao…on a serious note, I agree with snap Akuma for all the reasons above.
Why not TAC?
Personally I think that team needs to be killed in order; Wolverine is the main threat and if you guys haven’t played XF3 Wolverine before, understand that you don’t want him there. He’s too fast.
TAC is the best option. Wolverine needs to go and TACing will do a few things.
- It’ll kill Wolvie. DUH.
- It’ll build you A LOT of meter, which allows you to kill the next character without needing to XF or TAC OR for just your anchor. AKA Strider, Vergil, or Ammy.
- It’ll give you a strong incoming setup once Wolvie dies.
There’s also resets you could do, but depending on their assists you might want to just TAC instead. My cr.M + assist, fly, to airthrow reset works well on most character, but if you’re fighting Jam Session or Tatsu and they mash those they get out for free and can potentially happy birthday you. So be careful on those. Meaty CentRush L + assist is probably better in these situations.
Snap Strider’s, Vergil’s, or Phoenix’s only and only if you can’t kill the point.
Wb
Snap in Akuma, kill it with one meter lel
Snap in wolvie once you hit storm. XF kill him
Then proceed to get chipped out by XF3 storm
Actually, wolvie would be bleeding, no need for XF lol
I could try for a TAC but I don’t really have the infinites down and I prefer not to take chances. I think snapping the point out is underrated, personally. I’ll try to get them down.
Snapping the point is a viable option, but pointless if you could have killed a character. All you essentially do if you let a character live is give your opponent another chance of winning. This game is all about risk management and chances. By NOT killing the point when you able to, you gave the opponent an additional chance. Snapping is a decent option if you can’t kill the point, but it all depends on the team layout. Infinite is the best option without a doubt, but you need to have infinites down. Akuma isn’t that dangerous of an anchor to warrant bringing him in over attempting to kill Wolive (A more dangerous anchor btw).
My issue isn’t so much with Akuma anchor as it is with Storm+Akuma. Even after you kill wolvie, you still have to deal with high-lows for days. And I’d rather have Akuma out of the way before that becomes an issue.
It all just comes down to styles. We all know ourselves better than anyone else. If you know you have problems dealing with the assist, get rid of it. If you trust your ability to run through the team straight, do it. Do what you feel suits your style and strengths best.
I like what you’re saying, and it’s true to a point, but I feel in Marvel there’s a right decision and a wrong decision regardless of style.
Snapping an assist like that isn’t the optimal decision to make since it gives an additional chance for the opponent. The only time you should an assist like that is if you can’t kill the point character. Then snapping is a viable option with TAC.
But a TAC is an extra chance. It’s a reset. If he guesses right, not only is his team order not messed up but I also have to fight back against wolverine from neutral. Again. You know, exactly what we don’t want to do (especially given how vital the shield is in this matchup, and how badly Akuma and Storm both ruin it).
Also, about that. Can you even use the shield against that team? At all? And if not, what do you do?
no shield allowed
When I saw whirlwind beat the shield, it blew me away
…
I’ll see myself out
