Not liking online play

Is it normal ?
I’ve been playing online only since i got my 360 in november, mostly for SSF2HD and SFIV, and i often don’t enjoy it that much.
I stress too much when playing unknown opponents, dunno why since when i play against anyone in versus or on arcade i don’t have any problem with that(although there’s no SFIV arcade here, the closest one is 1000km away (that’s approx 620 miles) .
This makes me lose focus and do dumb shit which sometimes leads me to lose the match => more stress.

I got to the point where i’m wondering if i should continue playing online or not. Of course it’s a bit better when i’m playing against friends in player matches, but still, i don’t find it as enjoyable as playing someone standing near you and having fun with him.

What do you guys think ? Am I the only one ? Should i stick to training mode / arcade and playing irl friends?

PS: admit it, you thought you’d find a whiner crying over cheap opponents and spammers !

I tihnk online experiences in general are just more fun when you work with people you actually talk to, whether online or IRL. I would use Online as a training tool so that I can talk to my opponent and we can go over strategies and what we need to work on right during the match, which is the beauty of online matches. It’ll never really replace one on one competitive play, but Its def a great sparring tool.

Playing strangers online are especially fustrating these days though. At least BBH makes light of them in vids like these

I know how you feel. You never know what you’ll come into with online players. Not to mention all the stress that comes with what happens in-match. Half the time I stress over lag tactics and mindless patterns that end up beating my character. I always stress on Ken battles because I will not lose to Ken on any circumstances. And when the connection gets lost, No matter what the outcome is (I may be punching, kicking, throwing or in the middle of a special move), I already know I’m in for some trashmail, and although I should be humored by the stuff that gets sent to me, I usually get pissed off that people would accuse me of cheating and go so far as to block me and lower my rep. Common sense should tell you that QCB+K xx d/c is not possible with two hands, even if you use EX version.

All that said, don’t take online seriously. That goes for all online games. If you play, do it when you’re bored and you don’t feel like spending any money, and there’s no good DVDs or TV shows to watch. Don’t let that XBL/PSN nonsense get to you since 80% of the people on those networks have nothing better to do with their day.

I use online for practice and different character match-ups. I TRY not to take it seriously, but sometimes, it get the better of me. Playing face-to-face is a completely different scenario. There are no excuses. I know what its like not to have an arcade around, nor a big SF4 community so i gotta do what it takes to take my game to the next level. In this case it’s online. But I always tell myself that its practice only, which it really is! Dont take it too seriously. Take it as a serious practice/sparring session.

You guys are lucky that you have people that live by you and play. The only competition I have is online. It sucks.

It causes you to develop bad habits but it’s a necessary evil.

You’re supported to hate it. It’s a launching pad to find more real life players.

I Love It!

Chill. Your wins mean nothing and your losses mean less.

Just learn, have fun, get better, make friends, and have fun. That’s what it’s about, really. If you’re not enjoying yourself, stop. Or play with friends exclusively

edit

Forgot to say that I enjoy online play, with friends and strangers. There are so many different playstyles and characters to fight, it’s awesome. Just don’t play anything less than three bars, and if you do find a lag-a-licious three bar or more game, just leave and find one that isn’t laggy.

If you got no one to play with where you live (or you have but your friends are complete newbies and its not interesting to play vs them) then get online

i hate it cause i can’t look at my opponents hands

It’s not supposed to be liked, but I suppose it’s better than nothing…sometimes…

i tried ggpo and 2df 3s instead of going drive to the arcades by me.

never again.

Its the best thing to happen for me personally. I got back into SF because of online play, all my friends suck and there is no real good competition near me, I love online play.

If I take online play even remotely seriously, it just makes me hate the game. But if I just dick around and play like a maniac, it’s pretty fun in small chunks.

At least you guys are able to play online. I have the world’s shittiest “broadband” connection and the lag makes this game unplayable at times. I also don’t have any live comp withing a hundred miles from my area so I’m screwed. I might have to trade this game if I don’t get a better isp soon.

Don’t worry about it. I’ve found that I have far less angst in my life if I remember that you can learn some interesting things even when you’re losing. Of course, missing packets, lag tactics, and delayed inputs can screw you up, but it doesn’t really matter. Playing against folks in real life is the best, but they aren’t always available (at four thirty in the morning, for example).

I treat online play as a decent method to learn match ups and try out new tricks and hijinks. That pretty much takes the stress out of it. If I win, great. If not, maybe I learn that Blanka’s standing MP beats out Balrog’s jabs, or that you can hit Guile in between the hits of his cr. rh… You know, things you can use in local play.

You guys sure love to over exaggerate how bad online play is. Everything I could pull off offline I can do online, including all the infinites in the VS games on GGPO.

It’s not nearly as bad as you make it out to be, but then again this is srk so I really shouldnt be surprised anymore

I like online, it’s a never ending challenge. Back in the days of Dreamcast if I wanted to play third strike or mvsc2 in my drawers, my only option was to either play the CPU or risk catching an indecent exposure case at the arcade.

Now, thanks to the magic of the internets, I can play strangers with my dick hanging out and nobody even knows!

We might need some webcam support for ggpo soon then…
