"Not fat enough? We can fix that!" Rufus Match-up Thread

Cozeny said it, but I’ll clarify anyway: strong = mp, not fierce/HP.

In a less than ideal situation, I like the s.mp because they can be at any point in the jump. If you react a little early, or a little late, it’s perfect. Ideally, obviously you get a c.mk or st.hp combo

To clarify, me=noob

…Godlike find.

Must test on others!

That seems like a very easy combo to land to actually hurt Ryu.

is snake striking over guile’s sonic booms effective at all? I played an aggressive one who did the lp sonic boom walk up jump-in thing and couldn’t seem to counter it. I figure snake strikes should work, in theory.

dive kick. he wont have charge for flash kick.

My apologies if this has been asked but I haven’t seen it after looking around.

Against Gief, what do you do when he starts his crossup splash game off of knock down?

If it’s meaty, the MK roll isn’t working and the snake strikes are giving mixed results. Is FADC the only option?

Just as an aside, I’m not sure if this is covered or not. I read in this thread that cr.HP punishes Blanka Ball, but that the timing is hard. Justin Wong mentioned that you can only punish if you block the ball standing. Of course he was right, and the timing is very easy. I punished Blanka’s Balls (ha!) at about a 90% clip last night. Blocking standing was the key.

Just straight block? But other than that I think FADC or EX Messiah or maybe backdash. Haven’t played a lot of Giefs that use the splash.

WHAT THE HELL!!?!?!?!??!

I never knew blocking it standing up was the key. And here I thought it was impossible…

I’m trying to understand this.
Blockstun shouldn’t change from crouching to standing. Maybe Rufus’s standing hitbox is narrower. That could allow Blanka ball to penetrate further before rebounding.

stuns change standing to crouching. i’m still wondering how, but even in 3s, alot’ve combos cannot be done on standing/crouching opponents that can be done otherwise

That is correct. Most characters are fatter when they crouch. This has been in SF since old school SF2.

Its got nothing to do with blockstun.

But seriously…

AARRRRRRRRRGGGGGHHHH. What a nice catch! I wish I’d figured it out earlier >_<

no. he will just s.hp you.

Hey guys, 1st post in this section. I am thinking of picking up Rufus. I am a guile player right now, but some of his shit needs to be fixed before i pick him up again.
I come from 3s, and call me cooky, call me crazy, but do i get a feeling rufus plays a lot like necro in 3s? I used to be a great necro player, and won a few local tournaments with him and i still get that feeling when playing rufus.
I mean all the combo’s and what not still seem relatively the same. But yeah, thats just me, hope to play some of you guys!

Welcome! The milk and doughnuts are to your right, the cake to your left, and the biscuits and gravy is straight ahead.

If you have any questions let anyone know and we will be glad to help.

I never played 3s so I have no idea what Necro plays like.

NICE! Since you just came from Guile (one of my worst match-ups) could you tell me the almighty secret of beating the damn “following slow SB then sweeping/air grabbing/s. HP/etc” routine that EVERY guile follows? I don’t see any rufus option to beat that routine :frowning:

Exactly what PuFF said. Welcome to the forums, it’s not that big compared to some of the other character forums but we’re pretty active.

Welcome man, and NO I don’t feel like hes similar to Necro in anyway.
Hes more similar to Yun, with his F.HP / F.MK and also the Dive Kick.
Necro is a sick character though, PinoAB7 was just too much rape with him.

What does rufus use to break gen’s thousand hand poke thing? The only move I could get to work was EX tornado, only because the suction stopped the move and hit him, but I won’t always have meter…

A lot of guile’s are very noobish in this strategy honestly. They usually go for light sonic boom, follow it, they see the block confirm then usually go for a low sweep.
In this instance, you just block the 1st sweep kick, then you can counter the second one with either a lvl1 FA to backdash just to build meter, or just follow with a simple poke (i do not know the frame data for rufus’ moves yet so i do not know if your sweep works or not).
Another is the SB to target combo which is cr. medium to forward + medium punch. The medium punch is an overhead, so if you choose to block it must be high, BUT it is disruptable in between the 2 hits! Which is a reason why i want to switch from guile lol.
So you can jab between that target combo oddly enough. But a lot of the times, if they keep doing the sonic boom following thing, if they are close enough, just cross them up every once in a while, jumping over the sonic boom and him at the same time.
Against a guile, mix up is very important as he is sort of a thinking man’s character in this game. If you keep doing the same stuff, he will shut you down.
Also, once he is on the ground, it is gg for him. cross him up as he can’t do anything to save his life. Flash kick sucks, cr.mp isn’t a hit confirm, cr.hp isn’t either so you have many options to take him out.

You are right about that too, but i am talking about the general feel about him and combos. Very very similar to necro, (necro also had a dive kick thing) so that’s my story and i’m sticking to it

Nice to see your sticking to him, and yeah I can see what you mean by combo wise.

This changes the Blanka match-up DRAMATICALLY for me now. I NEED TO FACE A BLANKA IMMEDIATELY!!! :wgrin:

Yeah, the main thing is not to bait the Blanka Ball within the range of the Fierce Slide. But full screen, he’s pretty limited since I learned about standing block, step, c.fierce. Knowing that the B.Ball fails, it makes it easier to watch for the flip crossup ball, and just focus attack it. This also makes his jump ins more predictable, and overall evens out this matchup a great deal.

Just a random matchup question

If Abel uses his Wheel Kick, how do I punish it with the greatest damage OR consistency?
