"Not fat enough? We can fix that!" Rufus Match-up Thread

Gouken give anyone else troubles??

Gouken is fairly easy to deal with. Typically, Gouken players will attempt to bait jump ins then parry, since that’s his best option when dealing with divekick spam. Just wait for your chance to get around a fireball and start closing the gap. Wake up games are a little easier too, considering he has no Shoryu. As always, watch your spacing while in close, and be wary of his back-throw cheese.

On a side note, I could not break through a friend’s Sagat or his Gief at all last night. I’ve seen a couple videos on Gief posted, but as for Sagat I haven’t seen many. I believe this illustrates the match up very well (also can someone check who this is, I cannot read Japanese):

Great match. Lots of good things happening in that match. Lemme try to break them down:

 • Overall gameplan: Sagat is going to play a zoning game, so Rufus wants to close distance as safely as he can and push Sagat into the corners, where he can pressure him to death.

 • Start of match to 0:10: Rufus waits a bit. No tiger shots from Sagat, so its a good time to try to get in close with df+Forward. Sagat had decided to jump forward instead. Rufus recovers first and does the standard counter to someone jumping behind you, which is to mash a throw.

 • 0:10- 0:13: Rufus goes for the jump Forward to the head. This is a good angle to jump in on Sagat at. If he goes for Strong or Fierce Tiger uppercut, they’ll probably be crossed up and beaten by the jump Forward kick. Light uppercut might beat it though. At anyrate, it works at first- Sagat is too intimidated at the jump angle and opts to block rather than reversal uppercut it. Unfortunately, the j.Forward hits a little too high, and I suspect Rufus tried to follow it up with a stand Fierce instead of a stand Short, so he gets reversal uppercutted.

 • 0:15: That’s a bad zone for Rufus to be in, since he’s open to being safe-Tiger kneed. He gets out with a back dash. Good decision.

 • 0:19 to 0:32: Stale mate. Sagat is against the corner, but Rufus can’t get in. Rufus has to get in without spending too much time within Tiger Knee range, so he dances outside of it. Waiting for the opportunity to jump fierce or roll in. Rufus gets to pre-empt tiger shots with low fierce, and it works a few times. Tries to get in with a jump fierce at 0:25 but gets kicked out of the air by a stand round house (if Sagat had tried to counter with f+roundhouse, he probably would’ve been hit by the jump fierce). Successfully rolls in at 0:28 but fails to capitalise (might have been better if he had chained the 2X crouch jabs into a stand Jab, then danced in that distance with far stand jab/far stand strong instead of backing off)

 • 0:32-0:41: Stale mate ends with Sagat pushing out of the corner with an Ex Knee. Gets too predictable with Tiger shots and Rufus closes distance at 0:38 with a vertical jump dive kick then almost gets in with a jump fierce. Its too far to stand Fierce so he does d.forward> Fierce Tornado, which does not lock Sagat in block stun, so he gets countered with a vertical jump forward by Sagat. Might’ve been a better idea to simple go for jump fierce> crouch Roundhouse or even just Jump Fierce> stand Jab> stand Strong at that distance.

 • 0:43-1:01: Dancing. Good uses of crouch Jab, far stand Jab and far stand Forward kick at their max distances to keep the pressure on Sagat. Crouch Jab has huge range for a crouching jab and is great for footsies.

 • 1:03: Light Standing Tiger is too slow to vertical jump divekick past =\

 • 1:09: Always a good idea to Fierce tornado in, if the opponent is in the corner and you scout a fire ball or FA. Free ultra if it hits. Safe if its blocked. As long as the opponent doesn’t jump, you’re good.

 • 1:20: Cross up Dive kick ftw. Would NOT lead to a combo if it hit at that angle, but its relatively safe on hit/block and uncounterable with uppercuts, so its a low risk, low reward move.

 • 1:30: This Rufus player has the habit of stand blocking if he expects to be countered by an uppercut after dive kicking in. It works here, but it’ll cost him later at 2:33. No reason that he shouldn’t just crouch block instead.

-1:44: This is NOT a safe range to vertical dive kick in. If Sagat had just gone for the f+Roundhouse instead of dashing forward>Stand Roundhouse, Rufus would’ve been juggled for big damage.

 • 2:02: Should’ve done the LK follow up then FADCed back. Keeping Sagat in the corner would’ve been well worth the 2 Ex meter.

 • 2:10: Jump Fierce- Always the jump in of choice.

 • 2:18: Tornado into the corner again. Doesn’t hit this time, but he doesn’t get punished, so its still good.

 • 2:33: I really have no idea what Rufus was doing here. Probably stand blocking in case Sagat Uppercutted. Again, Rufus should’ve been crouch blocking if he had anticipated an uppercut.

 • 3:08: Ex Messiah to counter throw/block string attempt by Sagat.

 • 3:10: Jump forward cross up Dive Kick again. Will not lead to a combo if it connects at this angle, but safe when blocked, and will kill any uppercut attempts.

 • 3:36: Always be prepared to Ex Snake Strike or at least c.Strong anti-air. You don’t want to be forced into trying to Ex Messiah out of Sagat’s pressure strings if you can help it, since if he blocks, you get uppercutted for free.

 • 4:00: Psychic Ex Messiah after a blocked roll. Good option if you think the opponent is going to try to counter.

 • 4:15: This was a vertical jump dive kick from almost full screen range. Just a bit close and the f+Roundhouse > World of Pain would’ve connected.

Again good match. Really show cased how Rufus needs to keep on the offensive CAUTIOUSLY throughout the match. Jabs and stand forward for footsies, Roll/jump fierce/Tornado to close distance.

That is Torneko (RU) v Ekitai (SA) btw. Nice post, Acidic Enema.

I went fishing for Rufus Sagat matches last night after I went 1:6 to my friend’s Sagat. Those tiger shots hit hard and fast : / Here are some others I found:

General Questions, picked up rufus yesterday.

Any real use for f.HP or far HK? seems like it only works on scrubs really.

I seem to get punished when i dive kick and hit high, not low. Am I mistiming it, or divekick high is punishable as low isnt?

HP MWT into cr. jab always able to pull off on block? I seem to be able to about like 90% of the time, but want to realize if the other times its just me mistiming it.

In matchups where the guy mostly stays grounded, and has decent AA vs dive kick, I find it hard to reliably string into ultra, any tips? I know lk~>hk links, but I can’t really land that unless its from dive kick or FA stun.

Sorry, lots of newb questions. I can trade abel/ryu tips =]

I love far HK. Has +2 on block and comes out so awkward that it catches a lot of people off guard. I even use it as an AA into Ultra. Just don’t throw it out a lot. It has to be a surprise.

Dive Kick has a -4 on block and -1 on hit so it is indeed punishable if you do it too high.

MWT?

Try a far HK from time to time. or try and get him into the corner and land a HP xx HP Tornado > Ultra. Or even a Tornado > Ultra to mix things up.

Noob questions are the best because you ask while someone else may be afraid to ask, thus helping out more players. Rufus is underplayed so any new Rufus’ are nice.

I still have alot of trouble with people who are really effective at turtling. Whether it’s guile, Bison or blanka. Unless I can get them out of there comfort and shift the momentum I usually get owned. Any tips for getting in close to a turling opponent?

MWT = Milky Way Tornado. Some people call it that : /

A turtling Guile or Bison shouldn’t really be a problem (a rushdown Bison on the other hand is a handful). You need to be mindful of Bison’s standing roundhouse; that thing is godlike. It controls lots of horizontal and vertical space. He’s one of the players who it isn’t so bad coming in high against, in order to get over the st.RH. Also if he whiffs the st.RH when you are close and crouching tag him with cr.MP xx EX Tornado and blam! you’re in. Dive-kick shenanigans! Remember cr.MP owns all of his head stomp options for free, work on the timing in training cos it’s a little more finnicky than other anti-air normals.

Guile you just need to be mindful of his charge. He’ll bait that dive-kick and flash-kick it all day long; do triangle jumps to bait a flash kick then punish or rush him down in a similar way to Sim or Akuma: use focus attacks, the roll, etc. Good thing is he can’t do his stupid following a Sonic Boom nonsense against Rufus, else he eats a Tornado. You can focus between the first and second hits of his sweep too. Anyone know if you can Ultra in there too?

I have to say out of all of Rufus’ frustrating match-ups, I LOVE fighting Dhalsim! It’s rewarding when you manage to snag that opening and unleash on him.

How do people tend to open matches? I know it’s match-up specific, but a run-down vs. the whole cast would be good from an experienced Rufus. They have a whole thread on the Sim forum, e.g. this is their opening against Rufus:

–standing forward (preemptively beats jump, beats spin, beats normals, recovers in time if ex jesus)
–fierce yoga fire
–walk back and react to what he does
-----if jump, antiair
-----if nothing, fireball

lots and lots of rolls (df mk).

I don’t know if anybody has said this yet. But when fighting agianst Blanka, a blocked rainbow roll at the right angle can be punished by jumping roundhouse, followed up by ex snake strikes or ultra.

Ooooooo. That’s good to know. I will have to see what kind of angle it is.

Any free damage against Blanka is sweet!

This video gives a good example of the dangers of too much down+fierce. Nearly every time this player mis-judged the distance and got smacked with a jump-in combo…which is not something you want to eat from a Sagat.

What are Rufus options for dealing with cross-ups?

Completetly depends on the character, typically your best answer is to just block and wait out their string (or if they empty jump mash throw). Many characters you can tag out of the air with standing fierce before they make it over you.
Here’s a few examples:

El Fuerte-Typically mash focus+backdash, whatever prevents you from being knocked down to eat more mix-up. df+forward might get you away from his frog splash if he attempts to cross up, but it’s usually more safe just to FADC and get out of there.

Gief- Forward roll is your friend against body splashes. Well timed snake strikes (I find ex is the best since it comes out quickest) are also helpful.

Blanka-As stated before his rainbow roll is punishable with jumping roundhouse on block.

Light and Fierce snake strike.

c.MP beats some cross ups too.

The idea is that ken doesn’t just blindly throw the move out, he throws it out if I’m in range of it. If I’m simply jumping straight up, then all he has to do is wait at max range f+forward and anything I stick out won’t reach him AND if I land and do nothing, he throws out the f+forward kick which beats anything I do including another jump (it hits me on the way up). The only thing I have against it is EX messiah kick BUT, this usually happens at the beginning of the round so I don’t have meter anyways.

I suppose it’s not so much landing the meaty but what happens afterwards.

And the Ken that I play against DOES jump, but only on reaction to my cr.fierce/HP tornado. However it’s usually outside of his f+forward kick. Anywhere inside the range and he doesn’t do anything.

Oh and that’s another thing…HP tornado is -1 on block, meaning that since it puts you right next to Ken…he’s gets a free 50/50 on Rufus off cr.jab. From my experience, since I’m at disadv, I can’t even throw out an EX messiah kick because if Ken does the cr.jab, he’ll retract his limb and be able to block in time anyways.

hey guys. need some pointers. rufus is my back up and blanka seems to be my main right now. anything i should do different against an akuma player or in general. i like rufus alot but i am still not sure if he is tourney ready yet. i didnt do much of the dive kick. hp> heavy tornado seeing how if i miss or doesnt combo in i am losing 20% life. but every time i rushed in he teleported away. again guys. just trying out rufus. so be blunt or what ever. but need advice and tips.

you missed the ultra a couple times which was big. in my experience, if i had an ultra and a ex bar I would prefer to use the ultra if i got an air to air rh off. if he’s at max range and using air fireballs and regular fireballs you should focus attack a couple to build meter. but not too many of them cause that couple potentially be dangerous. if he uses his red fireball just jump over it. use s.hp -> hp tornado to punish blocked/whiffed hp dp’s. if you anticipate a teleport just don’t do anything and punish the teleport with c.hp.

Edit: also if you did the ultra instead of ex snake strikes you would have killed him in the last round of vid 2

you need to do more dive kick - c.jab - ex messiah (lk finish) - FADC - Ultra.

very very very important, you could have done it so many times in that first video. you had a full super bar the whole time practically.

just work on a lot of his basic combos (see basic combo thread hahaha) and he is a pretty simple character to get down.
