Northwest VFers

Where is that guy? Did he go back to Japan?

He’s studying in Wisconsin, I think.

It wasn’t a slow death at all without him, it actually got more popular after he left, but one of the problems is that Rob and a couple other new people dissapeared and no one has contact info for them.

Agree to disagree? I call it how it I see it, and what I see is a small group of people with a vested interest in a game that haven’t been coming together to have tournaments. As far as…

Teaching-I would surely hope you’re not talking about that one guy Rob who hasn’t been there in ages. Because boy, I’m sure Robert Plummer could tell you how many times I’ve asked him to teach me how to play Virtua Fighter 5. His reply usually was, “Dude! I can’t teach you how to play VF!” And well, that was that. If you’re talkin about WasFemto Mike, from what I was told, his knowledge of the game went as far as El Blaze. I don’t play him, I won’t play him. Basics? Yeah I could ask him, but then again I’ve had Frank’s strategy guide for nearly three months now, playing people for a concentrated amount of time in SESSIONS would surely help me learn basics. I could try to ETEG and R2-D2 all day against the cpu, it does nothing without realistic application. So far, the most helpful person (IN MY EXPERIENCE) was Chanchai early on and yeah he lives in Portland =[.

Tekken 5 DR-I could agree with you here, but that tourney we had only had four dedicated Tekken players in it. Seattle’s Tekken scene is probably 300x more stable than Seattle’s VF scene, had other people had knowledge of that tourney going down, they would’ve came. There are people that play Tekken yet don’t attend Zach gatherings, as well, all they play is Tekken. I remember being asked “Why don’t you run DR tourneys Mandel? Why didn’t we always run Tekken instead of VF?”

Yosuke-Well speaking for myself, Yosuke was why I played. Not you, not Frank, not Mike. That’s besides the fact that I like to try playing all types of fighting games. Ones that aren’t like Guilty Gear or Arcana Heart or Melty Blood. All it took for me to play VF was this exchange…

Me-Hey Yosuke, teach me some Jacky stuff.
Yosuke-Okay.

!!!

Here comes a new challenger!

Which brings me to my next point. In Seattle’s history of gaming (at least for the 8 years I’ve been around), the scenes that survive are the ones that had people present that taught the basics of the game to those who were eager to learn. Again, that requires people who are actually interested in the game. Let’s take a look.

MvC2-Rattana
ST-Julien Beasley
Tekken-Ric/SLA

Is it any shock that those are the most healthiest scenes here? Maybe people just don’t like VF. Maybe there aren’t enough people playing. Who knows? But I’ve always been one that believes that history repeats itself. You wanna prove me wrong? Have tourneys, at least generate some kinda interest. People should know, I love for Seattle to get attention and notoriety for other games besides Marvel but to say that the interest in Seattle VF5 isn’t declining is silly.

I think you should just play more VF mandel, wether it’s a tournament at Zach’s house, or just casual sessions at Zach’s or online. Just getting out there and applying what you already know about 3D games (low/mid mixups, seeing what a player does after certain moves, what grabs they do most often, etc. etc.) will help you out a lot. Shit if you want to play tomorrow or on Friday let me know what’s up.

I gotta get back in this shit. Funny now that there are people to play, 'm not studying the game like I did 4/EVO when I had no one to play.

I’ll be at the next tourney.

Mandel, I wasn’t really disagreeing… most of your points are quite valid, I just thought I’d correct a few minor details.

I was talking about Rob Plummer… he seems to have completely dropped the game now, but for the first couple weeks way back in February, he was the go-to guy, and he’d just run people through combos for hours.

As for teaching… hmm, I’ve made a point of making myself available, but I will admit that my skills lie in an uncanny ability to answer obscure questions about game mechanics. If you don’t come to me with questions, then I usually don’t know what to say. I’ve also had a problem, though, with people asking me to show up and teach them, and then when we’re actually at preppy’s, the response I get is “I’m waiting for my marvel match to start, ask me again next week.” I guess I can work on my side of the problem, but if there’s still noone actually asking for lessons, there’s only so much I can do.

So the 2nd round for the WCG’s is up, and I see that we have a few more NW people signed up this go around (Myself, Femto, Ray, Chanchai, Ratgoat) good luck to everyone, I know I have my work cut out for me =D Eileen vs. Eileen is going to be crazy.

If I can come out of Sunday’s matches as the winner, I won’t have to try and qualify again.

Wish me luck!

The 360 better not fuck up on me on the 2 hours that I need it.

Good Luck, Ray! I’m sure you’ll do great though

On the Northwest Majors note… Should we do a VF5 workshop after that tournament? Well… problem with that is everyone will be signed up for another tournament and have to focus on other matches.

But hey, if anyone wants to workshop after the tournament, let me know!

-Chanchai

That sounds like an awesome idea.

Uggh… I should have signed up for more qualifiers hehehe…

This bracket is a bit whacked, but can’t fault anyone on it.

First round is against Ratgoat (wish we were on opposite ends since we’re both Portlanders).

Whoever wins between our match will fight LA Akira, who we both have played a lot.

So round 2 will either be Shun vs. Shun or Lion vs. Shun (which is what Round 1 would be hehe).

Fun stuff

-Chanchai

Good luck to Nick, Frank and Ratgoat.

Nick & everyone else: You can still sign up for other qualifiers while registration is still open.

i just got my ass handed to me by trickyviper. You thought my Eileen was annoying? You clearly haven’t seen anything yet.

play More Tekken

GROOOOSSSSSS.

LOL damnit Jesse.

Hi All,

Chanchai giving a heads up from Bangkok, Thailand. Having a great time here, but no VF yet. Then again, T6 like devoured the Thai VF scene (and the top player here is in Japan at the moment). But VF matches will happen before T^5 moves to Massachusetts mid-month (while I’m still here).

I’ll write another “Chanchai’s impression of a Portland player” post soon… but I gotta keep this short because my time is running out at the net cafe.

  1. Grats on Sorias and Rayblade for fighting it to the end of the Northwest Majors’ VF Tournament. I really wish I could have been there!

  2. I want Fatbear to play more VF! OMG, make it 3 games he could dominate the region in. But oh well… the dude is busy and he’s too cool to want to hassle with selfish desires for the scene. I’ll write about his play later.

  3. Doh… gotta go… but can’t wait to play more VF with all of you (including Seattle) and I hope VF5R gets announced for console soon.

-Chanchai

VF5R needs to be announced for console…Eileen’s got some new shit that looks bomb.

Lately, I’ve been addicted to VF5R vids… Aside from dorky introductions and some bizarre costume options, I love everything that I’m seeing.

Pace of the game, Taka is very classic but he works in VF5R, Jean actually looks like a very fun character to me and I am tempted to devote a lot of time to learning him, etc… Also, the presentation is very slick and the new animations work well for me (though it’s weird seeing Lion doing the same moves, but they all look radically different).

I seriously hope VF5R comes to PS3 with online play (that way, we don’t have to worry about Sega wondering if they should bring it to the US or not, we can just import it without any problems).

Anyways, I’m back in the US now and I’m looking forward to more Northwest Fighting  Even if it means a lot of Soul Calibur IV mixed into the VF5 (but I still want to mainly play VF5 :P).

-Chanchai

Welcome Back!

Haven’t played VF since the tourney partly beacuase of a mental block. R has me pumped tho. It blows 5 out of the water from what I’ve seen. I’m not even that excited about anything else right now. Especially after watching Goh vids that take place on Wolf’s stage.
