UW is not really an easy place to rent out rooms and shit. Unless you’ve got a bunch of money that is.
Not to mention parking is a nightmare around here, or again, really expensive. I wouldn’t want to invite a shit ton of people and be like “ok, now go pay $11 for parking or find street parking somewhere and figure out how to get to the hub”
Co sign.
Plus it give sufficent planning and practice time leading up to the event.
Plus, that gives certian people (mainly talking about myself) time to spread the word to CvS2 players in Olympia…like preppy has said in the past…(not to CvS2 though) it’ll be like hearding stray cats…but I think I can do it, same with all the 3S players I know. All the marvel players I know will be easy since Kenny and a few other 253 allumni see them pretty often.
A few of my friends go to Woodinville pretty often for smash bro’s get togethers so I could have him see if they’re interested. I also could start posting on smashboards again as well. I could help that way too. And, despite it being a smashforum a surprisingly large ammount of SF players post as well. So I can reach out to both demographics.
Cause if we got a good feed back/turn up even as a side event, it’d be a great thing to consider.
With a lot of hard work from everyone, this could be a huge thing and we could get MASS hype.
Pablo: I also thought about the end of June as an option, but that doesn’t give much time before Evo qualifiers, and might therefore complicate the attendance of one or the other for NW players. It would be nice to take something from the regionals and make something happen; progess before Evo West.
Zass: Why can’t we do two of these? Good idea! Maybe a Fall regional and a Spring regional? If we’re doing the fall one, let’s get on this PSU opportunity quick! It’d be fine if the first one hasn’t given enough time to draw a large number of competitors, but it would be preferrable to get as many people as possible into this. The evo regionals were announced many months in advance, giving people the time to take days off, save up money for travel, and practice enough to stand a chance. I think we should follow suit if we’re serious about this.
I’d say having two is quite possible. Planning one 3-4 months in advance should allow for plenty of time to plan to show.
3 ST cabs and 6-10 TVs with no real work already sounds cool. It won’t take much time at all to organize, just sort out a time and we can have the room confirmed in like 3-4 days.
If any of you guys drop by before then for random casuals/etc, you can check inside the rooms / etc. How many other TVs can people bring? Consoles are a must as well. Though I think the limiting factor will be stations to play on.
I think this sounds good. I like the idea of one that will be sooner anyways, so we can make the mistakes that will be made and learn them. Then, in the spring, we can have a second one or even our own Evo qualifier.
The PSU venue sounds great. It’s already there, it’s free, it’s big… what’s not to like? And PDX is only 2 hours away from Seattle. They’ve been driving up to see us, I think it would be a great show of faith for us to come down to see them.
People have been bringing up a laundry list of games… I want to reiterate that tourneys are HARD to organize and a LOT OF WORK. I think people are biting off more than they can chew here. I suggest 3 “official” tournaments. If people want other games, that’s fine, and they can organize side tournaments. But I don’t think you will find enough dedicated people to run and organize official tournaments for that many games. It just won’t work.
I think ST and MvC2 are no brainers. The reason I said 3s instead of CvS2 is that according to Evo organizers 3s will be there for sure, but CvS2 may not be. I don’t playe either game so I don’t care, I’m just going by what Evo staff have said. ST, MVC2, and 3s are the only old games guaranteed to be there.
Why don’t people start posting a time in the fall that would be good for them? For me, any weekend works, but lets avoid halloween/thanksgiving. Also I think we need to have people step up and volunteer to organize and run tournaments. This will be the real test of what gets played
Honestly, I think that CVS2 should be the first priority in side tournies, after Marvel and CVS2. 3s has a larger turnout at Evo than either of the first two, which is a good reason it should be prioritized over ST (as much as I dislike the game), but Marvel rules the NW without a doubt.
Anyways, 3s is going to bring a lot of support if we get word out, and I still think Tekken is a great idea for a larger pull in attendance. Smash/Tekken side tournies sound good? I dunno if Paul, Zach, Nick, or WasFemto are willing to bring their PS3s, but I can bring at least 1 TV, and I’m sure Paul can bring another 19" flat-screen if necessary.
Let’s get a separate thread dedicated to Hardware if we wanna get this done soon enough for a Fall major.
Edit: I vote for this thread to get stickied, too.
ST runs this shit for free, who does not like the game?
As for ST cabs, I was in the process of getting one but this bitch who is selling it is stupid as fuck. Another thing is that I am pro AmeriKKKa, my cab would have happ parts only since I am not down with that yellow fever business. Therefore, Axel Kelly and Zass’ cabs would have to do, although I believe one is American and the other is Jap style. So yeah, console would just make things easier. Modded Xboxes FTW!
Regarding the games, we should really keep it focused. I strongly believe ST/Marvel/3s/CvS2 should be present. Tekken in the mix would be ideal but as Zass said, runnning this shit is no joke and a huge pain in the ass. Maybe if we get our own regional running with success, the Evo staff would pick up on this and then send their people for a NW qualifier? That would be awesome.
Also, I don’t even know how the hell we could get that many TVs. How does Evo do it? I have gwop for the cause, but not that much.
I believe that per car that comes to the event, there could be at least 1 tv. That means 1 tv per each 4 people, as I’m sure 1 out of every 4 people could bring one. Another thing we’ll need is multi-outlet surge protectors (6 outlets per set) and a couple of extension cords.
As for your cab- buy it! I’ll install american parts in it for ya for free, provided that you supply the parts.
Well at least at psu we can rent out a large number of tvs from AV depending on the day. We could probably also figure out how to do the bigscreen thing similar to what EVO had because there is already a screen in our ballroom. On a side note, I still feel not including GGXX woudl be limiting alot of the community who only plays that game. Imo opinion it should be 4 official games
MVC 2, ST, 3s, GGXX. And this is coming from me and my love for cvs2.
Cvs 2 makes a fine side tourney and I don’t think we’ll get a big enough turn out to make running 4 games that much harder, as long as we get this all figured out fast. But we need to get some semi official numbers to see how many people plan on showing up. Just in general. Anyone know php enough to make a registration site? Even if its not to fancy? I might know some people but I don’t know anyone who is diligent enough to get it done fast.
In my mind we need to figure stuff out in this order
Exact Date
Games played
Number of people coming + Entrance fee stuff
Tourney Format (Pools, Round Robin, 32 man brackets)
Number of setups needed to effectively run the tournament
I’m probably forgetting stuff but that seems like a good way to look at it.
Oh and for me I say the best dates are either Decemberish or spring. Sometime during the december break would be the earliest possible and even that much time we’d be flying by the seat of our pants a bit.
So for an event like this, I imagine this is supposed to take up an entire weekend right? So in that case why not have four games? I think CvS2 should have some priority now especially since we had Dr.B and JJJ post saying they would show up if it was there. And they are from the very areas that we are trying to attract (Cali and Canada).
It’s not at all clear to me that this would take the entire weekend. In fact, I would suggest making this a ONE day event (hence my recommendation to keep it to 3 games). Making it a multi day event is going to add the complications of lodging, and will require a hell of a lot more time from organizers (we don’t even have a single organizer yet)
B3 and B2 were one game events, and they took the whole day. B2 had less than 64 people on 2 machines and it ran from like 11am-midnight.
DEEZO aka MANDEL: Yeah it would be great to see you and get some matches duuuude !
FrankDaDank: Yeah I will bring you a copy of STYLE WARZ and I will convince OLI-V to show up as well if you guys have CvS2. You can also download some of my songs free at the links below.
I don’t think we should be really worried about any other game than the big 4 right now.
Smash Bros would get numbers, but they’d just be playing smash bros, they don’t post here, they havent been to any of our other events, etc etc. They’ve got their own scene, and how many of us are part of it?
Guilty Gear is a maybe, but I haven’t seen more than like 3 people post up about Guilty Gear here, I dunno if the scene is that large honestly, and I haven’t seen anything proving it is.
Tekken doesn’t have the numbers honestly. It might get intrest piqued if there’s talk of a major, it should be priority over guilty gear if so.
Let’s not try to get too big here. We’re not Evo, lets stick to 4 games, maybe 5.
I could definitely run brackets on my computer if anyone wants. That will definitely make it run faster. Also: I’m sure we could get at least 32 GG players, most of which will play other games (I know I will)
June is not a good idea to try to run this, since they are having qualifiers for evo around that time. I wouldn’t want to try to just throw our regional in with a bunch of qualifiers that are giong on, because chances are ppl would rather go to an evo qualifier than our regional. Also take in account that evo would be 2 months away, and if people are saving money to go to evo, they probably won’t have enough money to take the trip to our regional. Just my 2 cents
