Northwest Majors '09 - Saturday, August 22nd- Landmark Convention Center, Tacoma, WA

Oh that was yabuki? Foo’ looked hella different. I should’ve figured with him playing Yang. Good shit. Fuck Yun.

That’s true. I was impressed by the view, I didn’t think anything was nice to look at in Tacoma. I forgot I was in Tacoma sometimes!

oh yeah beware the right mens bathroom stall shit doesn’t unlock hahahahaa

I just had my buddy upload this vid:

I think it is what you were looking for, though I could be wrong.

I think that a lot of players forget what technical means…in fighting games.

I played Melee competitively at one time and can that I understood the game at a tournament level and can STILL say that it’s not very technical. Sure more technical then “hit your opponent away from screen, edge guard.” Spacing and zoning? Execution and momentum? Sure they’re all still there. However technicality as far as Melee goes is one thing that was mastered in a much slower game called Cvs2…it’s called Whiff punishing.

All Melee is, is getting your opponent to make a mistake in order for you to capitalize…the game is faster paced and therefore you reap a lot from what you actually get in return from your course of attack…this is called punishing, for those that think Melee is so much more technical then SF4…

Where else does the arguement go too? “But you can wave dash!!! It’s like moving without actually moving!!!” Yet another tool to bait your opponent into whiffing or possibly gaining ground on your opponent safely…“But wait the combo’s!” Yeah I got that, melee is “executionally” technical due to the percentage differences…improv combos happen and need to be made up on the spot…

Melee’s just another game where thinking is taken out of the equation due to how amazingly “technical” it is. I rarely see players adapting to each other because Melee is a game where it’s not rewarded very often…

All in all, it’s a fun game, and I can see how you’d think Melee is more “technical” then SF4, but please…understand SF4 before you can even have an opinion plox? k thx bye!

Melee is clearly the most technical fighting game ever created because it is the only fighting game in which you have to take Aderall to perform effectively.

I was under the impression that “Technical” described execution. Like you pointed out for doing combos on the fly. Doing every characters very timing strict gimmicks (wave dashing, L canceling, short hopping, short hop fast fall lasers, double fair with marth, up throw up air with fox, dart turning, super wavedashing, the momentum thing captain falcon does, waveshining, power shielding etc.) The way I was speaking of technical has nothing to do with adapting or mind games, in fact its on the other end of the spectrum. Absolutely though Melee is about getting your opponent to whiff so you can punish, and getting them into bad positions on the stage. Though there is also tech chasing, shield pressure(guard break) and range games. Anyway, if technical meant something else, I had no idea, sorry.

EDIT: also technical isn’t even necessarily good. Virtua fighter is hella technical considering you have to buffer in moves and throw breaks and shit constantly while doing other things, but that’s a large reason as to why it isn’t as popular. Super Turbo is my favorite game of all time and its not really technical(though still hella hard obv…)

whoa whoa whoa, Virtua Fighter IS hella technical game and it is HELLA good. The problem is the learning curve to actually become on scrub status (like me) =]. VF is the deepest fighting game out there hands down.

Exactly what I was sayin  definitely, hands down. And it has been since what 2? I only started with 3TB though, god that game was gross, you could hold the triggers to go into first person mode during single player.

EDIT: I just meant there are repercussions for being very technical.

So I was curious…do you think nwm was a big enough success to warrant another in 6 months? I’m sure noone else wants to think about it, but damn. I missed out… :frowning:
…and that would be sick

Melee

Spoiler

Sure, that will work for a while, but that’s what seperates the good players from the bad. watch any current high level match and see where the games gone. The current top players have amazing control and are very efficient. No move is just thrown out to fill space…

And really? Isn’t capitalizing on error the basis of any fighting game?

In the end they’re just different games and they run at very different speeds. The question was whether or not Melee was technical; which it without a doubt is. If you’re looking for depth, there’s plenty there too you just have to open your head a little.

Bleh. But yeah, just giving you your pennies back, Mickey. (like a vegetarian) :]

I love VF but the game still fucks with me since there is no guard button. I’m trying to learn more and hoping to get more tips from Chanchai and RayBladeX…those two can definitely tell you just how technical that game is

I think the problem with doing in another 6 months from now is School and Work commitments as well as funding.

What’s the G for in P K G then? I’m confused. Doesn’t the game have punch kick guard? Am I that out of the loop, or maybe you meant to say because there is a guard button?

I could argue against SF4 being a very technical game but I don’t think it’d really bring any good, just some sort of conflict.

Ah fuck I meant back guard. Sorry Mechanica but thats what I get when Im on little sleep from running around Seattle as well as editing shit tons of vids from NWM

I’m afraid that lesser known fighters such as Destrega, VS, Iron and Blood, and Evil Zone are much more deep and have much more depth than the likes of Virtua Fighter or Smash.

Wow, I knew you played 3rd Strike, but I didn’t know you did that well! Nice job, I would really like to play that game some day at Versis. We set it up super late on one of the first nights I came there, but I haven’t seen it since. I don’t know anything about the game though, besides an interest in Makoto, 'cause she looks pretty cool.

that was fun that was fun …good look to brent for organizing … i know that shit is alotta work but you did it and did it well gj with that … good rounds good matches people … i still got a lot to learn … didn’t realize there so many good f’in sf players in the northwest …

IMO making NWM once a year keeps it on that prestigious tip. Once McDrizzle and company sort out the logistics of their future events there will plenty of stuff to keep everyone busy.

I also think that keeping the event once a year allows it to be more relevant and even prestigious. It becomes a bigger goal as well.

At least for me, making it twice a year makes it less special and gives me all the reason to feel I can just wait for the next one if I had any inclination to do so.

omg I fuggin love destrega

~DESTREGA~

Ok yeah, this. I’ll wait for my fix once all our dedicated scene-leaders get their plans in motion…actually once those are going, things should be pretty sick…keep it up guys, and I guess I’ll just have to learn from missing it…won’t do that again

Word. I think if the peeps at SeattleVersus get a venue or two in Seattle area over the next year they would have a large attendance. Trick is not to have something like that too soon after NWM as some people had to take time off work, but you can’t have it too far after NWM as you want to piggyback on the hype NWMs provided.

Anyway. Yeah, once a year. For some reason I think Brent would agree lol.
