Northwest Majors '09 - Saturday, August 22nd- Landmark Convention Center, Tacoma, WA

Wish I knew how to make animated gifs, are they hard to do? I need to make one featuring myself.

I’m guessing there is a difference between gifs and animated gifs?

If not, most cellphones these days can make gifs, then you can just send it to your email. If not that you can always google “gif making programs” and I’m sure a billi0n will pop up.<-- (Using a zero instead of an “o” for billion for emphasis).

Dear Brent: Were/are you keeping the logo a secret or something? You should put it up somewhere. Or I will when you send it to me, if you don’t mind. Did you make it yourself? I look forward to something that looks better being at the top of the Northwest Majors website.

And dear Axel: You’re amazing for setting up the web site, now update it, or give somebody else a login/password so that they can. Brent should probably be able to modify the web page, for one.

Animated gifs are not hard to make, but I don’t think many cell-phones will make them for you. Unless it’s an iPhone probably. The most simple way is to just make a bunch of separate frames, which you can then toss into an animated-gif-making utility. If you’d like to see how I made the animated avatar with Photoshop, you’re in luck, because I uploaded the photoshop document, so you can just look at that.

Animated gifs are just slapping a couple frames of something together, it’s p easy.

Nope, not keeping it a secret. Just no one had any use for it until now, so I hadn’t uploaded it. I rarely think to upload things through imageshack.

How does the site look?

The image at the top isn’t showing on my computer for some reason.

Is it possible to put the buttons and the game names closer, or stagger them slightly. They are evenly spaced, so it looks like the top of bottom button could be for either game. We could get a lot of misregistration because of that.

I fixed the buttons, let me see what I can do about the image

The image is showing now. Could you put a different background behind it. White would work okay. If it is possible to move the registration box over so that it fills the whole screen that would leave more room for text at the top, so the buttons don’t go down so far.

Looking good. I am going to create the BlazBlue and KOF XII buttons right now and test it out.

I just sent the buttons to the NWM email.

A few months ago I made some logos for Northwest Majors. They’re not being used, so I figured I might as well post 'em up.

//edit: second logo deleted as it is being used for SECRET PROJECTS. :wgrin:

Damn that is sexy.

Damn these are sexy…wonder what the 2nd one looks like

I’m liking the first one as well.

I don’t want to be a hater, but I think I prefer the other logos to Brent’s. It’s not terrible, but I can think of a couple areas it could be improved.

Brent - If that’s the one you want to roll with, that’s fine - it’s your call. But if you’re open to using one of the other logos, or modifications to one of them, I think that with the ball rolling we could get things wrapped up in a week or so. You can have as much or as little say in that as you want.

In the meantime, I’m very excited to see registration open and the schedule on the web page!

I didn’t create the logo, and I am definitely open to change if that is what everybody would like.

I chose the current logo because I had already been working with someone on it, and it has the small NWM version, along with the large Northwest Majors version, which makes it a more versatile so we can use it in different ways.

I like Elliots logo a lot to, so lets go with it.

Right. It definitely shows some thought.

The way that the logo can be easily condensed is a plus, as is the subtle use of color, which is nice when it’s available, yet still looks almost as good in gray. I’m quite aware that doing custom letter work is not easy, too; nobody else has even tried.

For the logos posted above, I would personally throw out #3 immediately simply because it relies too heavily on graphic detail & color to communicate itself. But the underlying concept, where some graphic is revealed by the text, is clever and could be done well.

#1, a few people say they liked. I think it’s nice, too. I think that people will immediately associate the ink-splatter look of that logo with SF4’s graphical style, which might or might not be a good thing. I think this logo would look okay at smaller sizes, although some detail will be lost. (Here you can see what this logo might look like when avatar-sized: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v135/Incruentum/NWM-avlogotest.gif )

The little thing I put on the avatars is quite plain, and looks a whole lot like Seasons Beatings, now that I actually look at it. I can’t really defend it.

So, overall, I actually think I like Brent’s NWM logo, but I kind of don’t like the way the type looks, and that’s a big part of it. Also, I don’t really ‘get’ the slash in the big version. So, my suggestion would be to get your guy to polish the logo a little bit more, maybe explore how it would look in some different type styles. Since I am FULL OF OPINIONS, I’d be happy to lend a hand or something, but I’ll understand if they’d rather do it themselves. It’s possible you could keep a basic layout for the logo and tweak it every year (2009 could have a little bit of ink splatter, as “the year of SF4”, while 2010 might have a flame or something as the “year of KOF”, etc.), or you might want to settle down on something.

EDIT #2: Or every year could have a pixelated-as-fuck morrigan sprite, as “the year of marvel… again.”

EDIT: Also there’s a problem with the small logo, where the area above the W has some errant graphical element. It’s white, so you might not see it if you just open it with a PDF viewer or as a JPEG or whatever, but it will be annoying if you ever need to set the logo on a background.

I appreciate the criticism (easy because I didn’t do it :P, but I still like to hear your thoughts.) I was also trying to not go with the SF4! type of theme, because SF4 won’t be released again for the first time next year, and we will still need a logo. Basically I wanted to go with something that would be a little more timeless, and that would be “Northwest Majors,” not “Northwest Majors Fighters 4.” The slash is for listing things on the side, like it is now on top of the website. It was also supposed to be an reoccuring image that we could use throughout the tournament. Recorded Matches could have the slash running down the center with both players on each side. An image to tie things together later on.

I do agree that it also needs some tweaking, because I have had some problems with putting it on a flyer. The slash and stylized letters make it a little hard to fit in a limited space.

More important though is getting things done. Definitely go with Elliots if it is better for Avatars. Could you change a bit of the text below. The 22 is looking a bit like 11, and I am not sure enough people know where/what Tacoma is to reason out the letters. Adding WA might help. I personally disliked the Season’s Beating text because it wasn’t really legible.

Yeah, I also lean away from styling the logo too heavily on another existing logo. It’s funny as a parody, but probably not good for a serious event.

I get that the slash separates the logo from info, but as an emblem, it seems to be problematic. First, because it’s just a line. I feel that it needs something to make it stand out a little and be recognizable, if it’s going to be the emblem for the event. Also, placement makes it look strange when there isn’t information to put on the right-hand side. Some people may think that it is a 1, when this is actually the second NWM. Actually, a big 2 might be an interesting replacement? Aligning the text on the right to meet up with the slash kind of makes the logo lopsided, too, which could be a minor annoyance for the OCD crowd (me).

My personal biggest annoyance is with the letter forms; they look kind of balloony and cartoony, with non-uniform width at various points. This seems like a mismatch with the more aggressively cool feel that I get from the pointy bits.

Again, not trying to put it down. It shows effort and thought, and it’s quite possible that whoever did it was learning his/her way around Illustrator or some other difficult software when they made it, which makes things even harder. I’d love to make up my own version of the logo, or discuss it with whoever made it, maybe collaborate or kick some ideas around.

I do understand time is of the essence, all of this assumes that we could get a new, sweet logo made within a week. If posters are already printed and such, then I’ll happily start cranking out av’s with the logo you’ve got, and any changes to the logo can be implemented next year.

P.S.: Although I feel that avoiding an ink-splatter or brush-stroke style would be best, there are a lot of other graphical effects that could be employed. Half-tone dots or tearing would both be pretty neat, off the top of my head. Something like that could help the slash look like more than just a line.

Edit 2: As far as fitting the logo into a (non-premium) avatar, we’d probably end up with something like these:

A square-ish logo is fine, because av-making should not be the priority for making a logo. It can be worked around. I’d go with #1, since otherwise there’s no way to tell what NWM actually stands for. Actually, #2 is awful. The text could be positioned much better, but it’d still be no good, in my opinion.

Anyway, let me know what you think, including if this is just wasting my time as far as this year’s NWM is concerned.

Time is of the essence sadly. Any AV’s you could produce with the current set of logos we have would be ideal. I don’t mean to make you work on multiple things that would be discarded later. I do think that uniformity does a lot to get a message across, and one great logo is preferable to two goods ones.

But time is really getting short, and getting the word out is much more important than getting the word out in style at this point.
