sk has been more or less punking nk for the past couple of months by stopping all aid and engaging in large scale exercises with the US up by the border. nk’s 2 options are (were?) to admit they sunk the cheonan and lose face (which they won’t do since “face” is the only thing they have at this point) or lash out knowing that sk doesn’t really want to go to war with them.
most koreans think that reunification is gonna happen which is why they still support giving aid and tolerating nk’s bullshit. when the ship got sunk in march, lee myungbak cut off aid and demanded an apology…that’s it. and some people were still like “oh he’s being (too) harsh.” in general, americans care way more about nk than your average (south) korean, kinda ridiculous but not so much when you realize that they look at the peninsula as only temporarily divided.
I’d love it to end, but just who is going to end it and how? You’ve got 4 options, here is how they play out.
China: Large casualties but they don’t care, now they are fucked with a ton of xenophobic refugees that hate them, armed to the teeth and have to control it. That’s a losing proposition.
SK: Can’t take the economic hit from taking that population in, and can’t actually control the territory, oh, and most NK’s hate the SK’s. They could probably role them in armed conflict though.
Russia: Could loller stomp them if they wanted to, but again don’t want to deal with the population, and it really hasn’t been their issue since the 90’s.
US: We’d roll them in an armed conflict, it would be rather hysterical. However as soon as we do that it instantly becomes SK’s problem, and our occupation skills have proved to be rather shitty. This would be a worse quagmire than Iraq. Iraq at least we fucked up the ocupation, this there is no good option.
So that leaves who to fix this exactly? Short of glassing the place who is going to do what? And glassing it would come at the cost of radiation in SK, Russia, and China, so not really any option.
I mean, short of a 4 way just beat down there really isn’t a good option for controlling NK and pulling it in. But I’m not sure how well an ass kicking like that would go over on the global stage, not that anybody could do anything about it though.
I love how people on here are advocating how Amurrica should just go on in and invade North Korea like it’s no big deal. Nevermind the tremendous amount of manpower it would take to achieve and maintain such an operation plus the American military is spread thin as it is.
How many times has a relatively simple military action turned into a major FUBAR that bogs our country into a progressively prolonged conflict that ends up costing thousands of American soldiers their lives? Then years later, after the bodies are buried and lives irreversibly shattered on both sides, the so-called “leaders” responsible for it admit that there was no reason for us to go to war in the first place and/or the entire premise was based on bullshit (first Korean War, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.).
IF the US is stupid enough to get involved directly in this situation, expect the same ol’ PR bullshit about “protecting freedom and democracy” oh, and helping the “poor, poor North Korean people” by dropping a few bombs on them.
I never had much faith in the US government and given their past record of instigating or inventing conflicts to bomb the shit out of a country for the past half century, i wouldn’t be surprised if they had something to do with this as well… not to get all Alex Jones on this, but something about this stinks.

that’s not why they give aid. although it remains generally unsaid, it is better for sk to help prop up kim’s regime than for it to collapse into chaos (which is also why china has been nk’s biggest supporter). the result is that aid may save some lives in the short term, but merely perpetuate the human rights abuses in the long term. also, a “sunshine policy” can end up winning you a nobel, fwiw (which has been shown to be not much, apart from the cash award).
sk is not even in the same position west germany was economically when the wall came down, and it took over a decade for the country to really recover from the reintegration. your average south korean actually wouldn’t want reunification yet because they are content with the status quo and not prepared to sacrifice their current standard of living–they still gotta pay for their kids’ education bills and their luxury goods somehow.
as for americans caring more, that is only true in a superficial way. many americans could care less about what’s happening there, and apparently the situation in nk is not as glamorous to support as tibet, africa, or haiti, for instance. apart from the us state department (who could be handling the situation better, but at least they’re better than the previous administration), not to mention the sk government, the ones who arguably affect the most tangible change are the underground relief organizations who smuggle out nk citizens (usually through china and thailand) and help them reintegrate elsewhere.

Back on topic, I haven’t read everything in the page but i never heard of China actually owning any nuclear weapons in the past. Maybe they have now, i don’t know, but i would like a source about this.
“sunshine” policy was revealed to essentially be giving north korea hundred of millions of dollars (hence the chief of staff getting indicted/convicted) after the fact and ultimately failed as north korea still got nukes and still randomly harrassed and launched attacks on the south.the longer nk keeps up their nonsense, the longer the sk economy is subject to random fluctuations since nobody wants the uncertainty, if the dprk collapsed tomorrow the chaebol would go apeshit with joy considering all of the money they’d be able to make bringing the north into the 21st century. also the main reason s. korean politicians continue to deal with north koreans with kid gloves is bcuz the population wants it that way in large part due to them still viewing them the north as their countrymen, if you think otherwise ask some random ajossis about the north…actually on second thought, don’t bcuz it’ll get awkward real quick.

I am aware that China had nukes around the 1960’s (my previous post was kinda wrong after i re-red it), however i remember around 4 years ago that they where actually destroying them. I don’t know, i haven’t been following world news for so long now, so i’m pretty much ignorant our outdated at the least. Anyways, from the info i read in had in the past before, China had low tier nuclear bombs that they were given to them by Russia/SU, and they’re destroying all of them. I remember reading that in a newsletter i think around 4 or 5 years ago… maybe iy was just gossip or a weak rumor, or half information (like they destroyed those old bombs to replace them with their own new ones. i don’t know. i’ll try to scoop out a link.
