Ever notice that every new American president gets their own personal war, particularly when their approval ratings are low? This shit has been going on for decades and it looks like Obama’s continuing the trend.
A couple things.
This sort of stuff does happen on a regular basis. Firing off rockets into the sea, shooting artillery across the border, sinking/attacking ships, shooting down airliners, kidnappings, and hilarious axe murdering sprees over a tree. The results are always minor.
Here is just the stuff in the past decade
Note, those are just the military engagements, and not some of the other jackassery that has gone on. War was never a result of any of those, just a lot of bluster and saber rattling. So that will probably remain the case here.
Next, North Korea’s nuclear capability isn’t really what we are worried about. Their detonation wasn’t all that impressive. The first detonation was laughable and could have been caused by a non nuclear weapon, the second was about the size of the one we dropped on Japan. We’re unsure if they have the ability to make enough uranium to actually stock nuclear weapons. It’s also questionable if they could even deliver one properly.
What is worried about is the slew of artillery batteries they have aimed at Seoul. We’re not sure how many can hit it. But they have enough to easily turn it to rubble. They don’t need nukes for that. The whole huff about nukes is if they could hit Japan or even the US with them, which even if they have a nuclear warhead, it’s debatable that they could get it there.
As for China, times have changed. Japan, South Korea, and the US are now important trading partners of the Chinese. It’s not in their interest for us to have any trouble with them and NK is just an annoyance now. They aren’t a regional partner needed to keep their enemies in check, but they are a nuisance. And they don’t want the millions of starving Koreans flooding their border.
If this plays out like all the other attacks, there will be a lot of shit talking, lamenting what happened, lectures of this not being productive, and some aid will flow into NK and he’ll throw a parade. And about a year out something else will get blown up and the cycle will repeat.
Ok well that makes sense. I just don’t think we should have the attitude like it can’t affect us.
I know all that. The north Korean government has been doing this shit since Clinton was in office. He made a deal with them to depower two of their nuclear reactors that were capable of making weapons grade plutonium in exchange for aid. A few years later Kim Jong Il roles up on Bush and is like “Guess what mother fucker? I never turned those reactors off! Gimme a bite of your pizza!” and Bush was like “Hell no, mother fucker. I’m not giving you any of my pizza.” So they continued with their weapons program.
The entire world is like “That little midget does NOT need the ability to make nukes.” and Kim Jong Il is like “You’re right! I don’t need nukes! I need a sandwich! Give me a sandwich and I’ll turn this nuke making machine off.” No sandwich given, so he’s making more nukes.
Now, I’m high as a god damned kite right now, but that’s how I see things. And what’s worse, is that I don’t think he’s building a nuke. I think he’s building a god damn Gundam.
But seriously, the N. Korean government is prone to doing this shit. They start some sort of hostile engagement, be it via the military or trying to buck at U.N. policy, and then demand a reward if they cease their douchebaggery. I’m sure we’ll see N. Korea demand aid from various counties to stop aggression if this sort of thing continues.

May fizzle. S. Korea lost a ship to a submarine attack months back. After a lengthy investigation they concluded a N. Korean sub had sunk their ship. Nothing that we know of from mainstream media informants has said of an escalation of that.
I think it’s pretty obvious why nobody has fucked with N. Korea yet because they’re China’s backyard. It always made me wonder why Bush’s admin who labeled N. Korea as part of the axis of evil never went after Kim who boasted of having or wanting nuclear weapons. I chalked it up to the fact that the US would have to answer China’s “Excuse me wtf r u doing?” when UN backed forces invaded.
Beside SK, China would be the one want NK to stop it’s insane act the most. If (that’s a pretty big if for now) UN/US invades NK, chances are that China will say, ‘let me handle this’ and take NK themselves and let SK or China+SK take over after, because even China and US are on friendly terms China won’t want any US force sitting right next to them, Japan is enough ‘trouble’ for them already.

You guys are WAY oversimplifying it. NK isn’t a CHILD crying for cereal in a store.
NK is a starving, mentally unstable, fully grown man with a GUN crying for food surrounded by people withholding food from him while pointing their guns at him. Any attempts to “spank” him would probably result in more than one of those guns going off.
North Korea is America’s nightmare. A tiny, relatively insignificant country that has been growing closer and closer to having absolutely nothing to lose in a nuclear war. Unlike the tensions in the Middle East, where they still rely on us for a vast number of economic reasons, there are very few things holding NK back from a full fledged nuclear attack. They have long been dying as a country, and they don’t seem to have any problems taking some of their enemies along with them.
This shit has been going on for years. As tiny a country as they are, and as small an army they actually have, there is a REASON the US have not simply rolled them over even though they have consistently given us cause to wipe them out.

North Korea’s leadership, ie the dudes with the guns, aren’t hurting for anything, they live like kings. Mistaking this situation as “we need aid” is vastly over simplifying things. We freeze bank accounts, drop sanctions, and they don’t give a fuck.
You’ve really got to look into the history here and the internal politics. During the cold war, NK bounced from being Russia’s best friend to China’s best friend. Both wanted them not only to keep SK and Japan in check, but to keep the other communist power in check. Well… times change and both Russia and China now do just fine with SK and Japan and need those nations far more than they need NK, and neither is worried about each other to the same level. So NK is pretty much worthless to everybody. It’s the entire regions problem. To China and Russia NK is a net negative, tons of starving people they don’t want to deal with, a reason the US is sitting right there, and fucks with the markets of their major trading partners on a whim.
The main reason he hasn’t been spanked is because Kim is holding his own people hostage, with the threat of millions of them rushing into China and SK which will cause utter chaos and wreak economic havoc on them. And there isn’t a solution to this, rebuilding NK is a nightmare nobody wants, and nobody wants the people. So the situation can’t be won.
Often these power displays are for internal issues. They make great propaganda, so do the retaliations. The leadership has everything to gain from it.
Aid does flow into the country, it just never gets to the people. And no matter what he get’s from this, that isn’t going to change. He will probably help secure leadership for his son, which is probably what this fiasco is about.
At this point the ROK could probably role NK in a fight. Yeah part’s of Seoul would get hit with artillery, but this again doesn’t solve the refugee issue and just what the hell they are supposed to do with the nation after the fact.
