Yeah there’s a lot of logistical things that go into it that make it easier said than done. Finding a venue that’s willing to be flexible, getting people to bring setups, organizing brackets, getting people for their matches, making sure everything runs smoothly so the tournament doesn’t run into forever oclock. Some of these gaming cafes seem like decent places to do it but then they end up having TVs that lag or non-flexible hours and what not.
Then comes advertising and getting the word out, which is also tough, since obviously not everyone posts on SRK or is in one of NCs like 5 different fighting game groups on facebook. If there can be groups of people in NC playing fighting games right in my home town and I’ve never even heard about them, there could be tons floating around out there, but they might as well be in a different dimension when it comes to finding them lol. Too bad the games don’t incorporate some access to a central forum like how BLC does. If people wanna talk BLC, just go to the forums right there on the games website and you’re good to go. I guess there’s capcom unity but that site is pretty scrubby from what I’ve seen.
The way I see it, SRK is still where you go to step up and be competitive in real tournaments. Thing is, as these games get more popular, there are groups of people that just get together and play just to do it socially. They’re not really looking to be the best in NC/the country, more just having fun at a friend’s house. Playing to win may not even be involved. Our rules/how we play the games have classically turned a lot of casual players off, but as SF4/Marvel creeps into a more mainstream audience, these guys are more likely to group together with their own events, possibly even their own wacky tournaments.
There is largely a problem of just people knowing about us, yeah. You wouldn’t right off think, ok I got SF, I’m getting decent at it, have to find the hardcore community! Most don’t see it that way, unless they hear from a friend’s friend about the whole thing or stumble upon it. They’ll just get better in tiny circles of people they know and that’s good enough, especially if you don’t know any better. We were all there at some point - we thought we really awesome at x game when we were 12 at the arcade and noone could beat this one special move we did a lot. People I talk to now in their 30s who fondly remember just SF2 in the arcades stay convinced they were awesome at the game, and maybe they were, but their knowledge had to be severely limited. Most of them probably never even fought half the cast.
Anyway, really I mostly think that if someone has the fire and wants to step up they’ll come across us, or they already have. Any fighting game resource they may look up on the internet will eventually link them here, and then they can come in our thread and try to connect. Everybody go to Jon’s house, he doesn’t care who you are. Probably.
Sooooo there isn’t an MvC/SF event every week? Getting Raleigh players together is harder than catching a wild Squirtle in Pokemon Red.
PM me your address and I’ll come out. Do you stay at the same place you did a year ago? If so I stilll need to get directions, but I shouldn’t get lost too much.
P.S. Black and Jewish jokes aren’t funny anymore. All about white and nazi jokes these days.
Just a heads up. Here in Greensboro, the BFP guys are working on getting a WEEKLY bar fights scenario happening every Tuesday from like 7pm-2am.
Right now, we are discussing format and still have to talk more to the owner before we can officially announce. But an announcement should be coming within the next 2 weeks. We are going to host another MINDGAMES FIGHT CLUB event at Village Park on a Friday prior to starting weeklies.
Tournament (ala Level Up Series) weekly is looking like the format we are going to go with.
We are going to need all the support (and setups) we can get. We also want to cross promote with other scenes like RESE, EZ, Gamefrog.
Hard work and long meetings but it looks like it will work out.
It would be nice if NC did have a tourney in RDU one week, Charlotte next, Fayetteville next, Greensboro next each month then each scene had a weekly then once a year all the scenes came together to run, promote, and participate in a NC Major.
One brick at a time.
Also, I think I am getting better at UMVC3. Frank & The Stranges - Hulk / Frank West / Doctor Strange are working well together. I will be a true monthly warrior in 2012. Just got to dive right in. I appreciate all those pros in the area who have encouraged me to give the game a legit shot.
Wednesday at Champs in triangle town center mall, Raleigh off Capital blvd.
Apparently they’re doing weekly bar fights too. If everyone is here by 7 or so I’m thinking we could roll up there and take their money haha. Lets play it by ear.
I won’t be at EZ this Friday because of work. But I guess that isn’t a bad thing since my stick has finally bit the dust. Gonna get a new one within a week or so.
That $5k SC5 pot bonus. I know it’s crazy to think I can do it, but if that’s the case, Feb I’m definitely skipping KOF to try and learn a 1 month SC5 gimmick and see what happens.
Yeah im pretty much only feeling KoF, so Champp’s wouldnt be my thing. I dont have a problem playing cheerleader though. Im packed up and heading out now. See you guys soon.
