Keep your Soul Calibur expectations at the same level as your Dead or Alive expectations and you (probably) won’t be disappointed.

Can’t just guard while you’re attacking lol. But yeah I guess if he just guards something and then attacks back, it might give him enough time to swing his sword. He already had a counter though, and I hear people are pretty content to lame it out and let him kill himself with his unsafe moves, so I’m not sure if it’ll help when people aren’t being aggressive. Oh well whatever, Seigfried is the cooler big sword character anyway.

im in rocky mount and i wanna play

I’m in tarboro and spend a good bit of time in rocky mount. What games do you play man?

It was never a problem of Soul Calibur’s defense being too strong to warrant a guard meter. It was the offensive options being too soft. And this was made way worst in SC4. Lows are slower? Many lows are negative on hit? Lows are even more unsafe on block? Some lows are even UNSAFE unless they hit on counter (What the flying fuck?!)?! Obviously, lows being just 1/8 the offensive problem, I just thought that was an awesome example of Team Project Soul’s flaws w/ SC4.

Me personally, I just don’t like the idea of some idiot wailing on you w/ safe moves and moves with small disadvantage, w/ no thought process what-so-ever, while you’re sitting there guarding all hit levels with ease because he (your opponent) can’t come up with anything intelligent. To make things worst, B’s are the complete polar opposite of SC2’s. I’m not saying SC2’s evasion wasn’t ridiculous (it was, and I didn’t complain because I played w/ Talim), I’m really saying that Namco didn’t know how to tweak their games properly (however, their verbal commitments to SC5 says otherwise). B’s tracked like the fucking Russian police in SC4! I love the CH on step and I can get down with the way B’s tracked in SC3, but the actual rules put in place in SC4 make no sense:
So I can 8wr your BB and be safe (w/ hardly a window to counter back), but if I attack before your second B while STILL 8wring… and I’m standing BEHIND you, your second B swings 180 fucking degrees and wacks me for a run counter. That’s inconsistent and forces many characters to punish w/ breakable side throws instead of whiff punish.

So w/ this threat, you also add a guard meter and a character that can not only take advantage of this system, but walk forward sonic boom you into death combos w/ button binds? Good shit. All I’m saying is, the guard meter is a shitty way to promote offense in SC. It just doesn’t work well for the way the game is structured.

We’ve all played defensive games without guard meter and found artistic ways to create offense. While I’m happy with the compromise (at least for me) for guard meter in SC5 to not cause instant death, it’s still a sad and unoriginal element. I would be happy w/ that shit they have in GG where if you aren’t active enough you lose super meter. But don’t punish me for being able to easily make my opponent look like a fool because they don’t have a clue what they’re doing on offense.

Overall, most of you know me to be a strong supporter of SC (but not its SC3-SC4 community) so there is my fair share of bias when I talk about it. Despite that, I will say this though, SC5 looks to be a great title that has answered a lot of issues in the past and has improved on the ones that players loved. The team is very involved w/ the community this time around and have actively made changes based on feedback from top players with each beta version of the game and the game hasn’t even hit the shelves yet. I am incredibly excited to play again because the new elements add a bit of elegance to the gameplay. And hopefully, many of you here at SRK will give it a shot as well.

And to prevent any misinformation on SC5, I would be glad to answer any questions (that I am able to answer) about the game if there is any interest.

i play AE mvc mk… i wanna learn BB and KOF

How easy would it be to get into a game like SC5 coming from playing SC1/2/4 non competitively?

Probably not very hard. SC has generally been an easy game to get into, though you still have to work to be good.

jus like any game

I am trying to find a good monitor to play fighters on. Does anyone have a particular monitor preference they’d like to share? Also what monitor is the correct one they use for Evo? The Asus or the ViewSonic? I’ve been getting different answers.

<==Best Continue screen ever :D!

Asus VH236 is the Evo and MLG monitor.

There are better monitors with less input delay though. The Evo one is just more well known.

I see, thank you very much.

Well, in that case, you start throwing. Throws are supposedly buffed, a late throw break is supposed to leave the thrower at advantage and do a tiny amount of damage. Just Guard, I’m thinking the use for that will be a lower-risk/no-meter cost way countering frame traps mostly. Turn that +2 /+3 into a -1/-2, then punish when they try to attack in disadvantage. My worry with Just Guard is that it will turn into SF3 parry and people will start just guarding everything, but it sounds like they made it risky enough for that not to work, plus you have legit counters to it such as throwing and delayed frame traps.

Just my theory fighter guess.

Don’t have much time, just wanna talk SC for a bit, since the topic is still hot. I’m looking forward to SC5, it looks like the gameplay is a huge improvement over 4. Just not wowed by the characters yet. Guess I’ll just main Mitsurugi like I did in SC3 Arcade edition.(^o^)/ All in all SC is a great series to get into, and I think it can teach you lost of stuff and improve your reaction time.
@ Alice chan, you should have little trouble getting into it. I never competed in SC tourneys before, so we can learn together.

Well that explains why none of them responded a while back when I kept asking who plays 3S, haha. I was like where/how are you finding this people.

You guys play Fridays or some other set weekly day? I think EZ is like an hour and a half drive for me. Sometime after the next ReSe perhaps I’m gonna see about planning trips up there. Also, when is the next EZ tournament?

But yeah I’ve been asking about playing 3S ever since they posted its comeback date. Heard a lot of talk then suddenly crickets. Figured everybody was only hyped from nostalgia and really wasn’t expecting anyone to play.

I personally don’t think guard meter is gonna be that bad in SC5. Can’t you deflect attacks? Side step sucks sometimes, but with the option of throwing your opponent off for senseless mashing I feel you don’t have to worry too much about extreme offense. SC has given some useful tools haven’t they? Talim is pretty button mashing friendly, but like any mashing hungry player you’ll catch on and they’re dead. Someone trying an offense only approach is gonna eat it hard in high level play.

But overall I believe there are gonna be more loses due to less knowledge of mechanics in SC5 than BS in the game like 4 was. Only time will tell at this point. Hopefully the game does well and justice for old and new players alike.

Like I said, I fully expect people to try SC5 and drop it within the week. I realize there is some apprehension, which is 100% warranted due to the track record of 3 and 4, but this is the kind of shit that kills a game’s scene fast. It’s really sad when Jon’s the only one who gets hype about new games coming out, maybe everyone is just too old lol

SC, as a series, is generally really easy to get into (the only thing easier might be DOA). I can pretty much give you the basic paper, rock, scissors, of the game in one post, and the technical stuff, I promise, will just fall right into place. Of course, this doesn’t mean you’ll pick the game up and win national tournaments day 1. Like w/ any fighting game, it takes studying, practice and healthy competition too be good.

All you need is basic fighting game knowledge to play SC5. You don’t need to play the previous games. The biggest hump I can think of is getting used to having a guard button.

Another thing to remember, is that SC5 was completely rebuilt to be an easier game than all previous versions. They’re doing this to get more people into the game and to make the harder characters more available to players that wanted to play w/ them but were unable to execute well. To quote Bibulus from 8wayrun.com during his interview w/ the director “So you made the Soul Calibur version of Street Fighter IV.” And that’s pretty much what it is.

“Soul Caliber version of Street Fighter 4”???..oh boy.(._.")
I never asked for DUBS.

Sam: Sorry to hear about your family’s rough times, I’ll be keeping them in mind.

Calibur comes out in roughly a month. Get HYPE if you want (my preference), stay skeptical if you want, but either way I’d love for as many people as possible to give it a legit chance. Me, Will and some others will be happy to answer what we can.

Soul Calibur and Street Fighter 4 in the same sentence sounds awful. Just hoping this is a rumor, but I won’t pass judgement until I actually sit down and play the final version first. Just gonna have to find someone with a copy come release date now.

I personally have enjoyed every single DOA game, so if they could somehow manage to screw that up I would be surprised. Its a friendly button mashing fighting game with cool graphics, nice stages, and fun gameplay minus some things. I think of it as a fun non competitive fighting game, although I’m sure there are others who would like to play it competitively which could cause some issues there. The teaser looks promising, but with Itagaki out of the picture I’m still gonna have to try it out. Ninja Gaiden 3 I will say has me a little worried. All the way up to the quick time events. Might as well play Ninja Blade. But we shall see.

What was wrong with 3? I have to ask cause I can point some stuff, but overall it was still a good game IMO.
