North Carolina Thread LXIV

A lot of the current “OG” NC scene formed in the arcades of the SC2 days. Myself, Blake, Charles, Chaz, Doug, Mike Stinemire, Dale, and a bunch of others met back then. We all played that one pretty hard core, fell off when 3 was ass, then played SC4 competitively for a few months before the flip floppy community killed the game with its constant banning and unbanning. After things settled, we were too distracted by stuff like SF4 to go back, but with SC5 coming out, this will be somewhat of a revival for the old SC players. For me, first and foremost, I was a Soul Calibur player before anything else. Kinda evolved past that in recent years though. Little bit of a chistmas history lesson for you guys.

Sad shit for me this year… hmmm… I got an awesome job, but then Iost awesome job, but then I got unemployment which is more awesome than said job, then Osama and Kim Jung il died. Then Marvel 3 came out. I went through a bird, a sugar glider, and a dog upon realizing that the best pet in the world was just my cockatiel, so I have renounced all other pets from here on out lol. Actually this year was pretty decent for me looking back.

Probably the same reason behind KOF XIII’s hype. Even though I’ve touched some of the previous KOFs, XIII is my actual first one where I’m sitting down trying to learn the game. All the other ones I don’t even think I ever went into practice mode once.

But I disliked SC4, despite SC3 being my absolute favorite SC game. People say SC3 is broken, but even though I played it a lot it was never for competitive purposes so my viewpoints on that game are different. SC5 is just something fresh and comparably new. Along with VF and MB I’m excited about those as well.

Yeah, what you said.

I played quite a bit of Soul Edge at the Cyberstation, had to go to a bowling alley to play Soul Calibur 1 lol but 2 was definitely a time where there were alot of players. The hype comes from people playing SC5 and saying it’s more like Soul Calibur 2 which I’m cool with. You know if I go to Final round this year, it’ll be for blazblue and soul calibur 5, the last time I went to Final Round was for Guilty Gear and SC2. Weird lol

A big reason stuff like KOFXIII and SC5 are getting hype is because people want something new. SC5 is a big reason why I’m hitting Final Round as well, even though I have no clue who I’ll be using since both my mains are likely cut.

Soul as a series also has some nostalgia value- nearly everyone loved SC1 or 2. Also, I didn’t think SC4 was all that good , but I had fun playing it.

I’m excited about SC5 cause it looks like something new that A) I might like and B) Might have a playerbase. like KOFXIII is great and all but at my college nobody plays that game I can find people to play 3rd strike, Marvel, SF4 pretty much any day I want, hell I can even find guys that play Soku and even god damn Umineko easier then getting someone to play KOF.

Who plays 3S?! I’ve found more KOF players than 3S. Doom is about the only person I know who plays 3S. I think Hoc does too since he’s into manly fighting games, but we’ve never played until KOF XIII came out. Wanted to do the stuff I’m doing with KOF now with 3S, but it was starting to look like more of an nostalgia boost so I later stopped caring.

You gotta go out to EZ Fridays/Tournaments more often then, Faye is pretty big on 3s. It definitely has equal to or greater than the amount of players KoF13 has and I think it was either FaceNC or Knuckledust that was like “pick the game up because if your serious you can get good fast enough”. Basically all the info is there and lots of amazing competition in NC.

that doesnt sound like something knuckledust would say lol

I probably won’t play SC5. My favorites Kilik, Sophitia, and Setsuka are not present and the designs on their replacements are not appealing to me. None of the new characters look visually stimulating either.

I’ll continue to play Tekken 6, and will pick up Skullgirls when that comes out. I would get KOF XIII too if I had the money. Hey gamewizard, are you still willing to bring in a Catherine setup for my tournament?

Whats Soku???
I’ll play SC5, 3 was my fav, 4 was slow and difficult so I lost interest fast. To be honest none of the new characters look really cool to me. I think the Soul series needs a new character designer or something. This guy is just straight up out of ideas or not even trying anymore.Carbon character copies from the old games, plus uninspired new fighters…NOPE.Dat Assasin’s Creed guy (._.)/ Rose with a claw/Ishida Mitsunari clone/Goku kilik clone/Taki clone/Sophitia clone/other blond chick clone/ Xain hua clone, etc etc etc…I wanna play for the new speed and super moves, but the cast is so boring. 2012 still doing this shit to us …really Namco…really??

They’re not finished with the roster. I think we’ll see a new Setsuka at least- it’s one of Daishi’s designs and I can’t see him axing a character he was responsible for.

Bunch of random guys down at state that played it on GGPO for years. Before Ultimate came out like 1/4 times I walked in the library they were playing 3S.

I still play 3S, but with out new blood? How will this game grow??New games don’t wanna take the time or skill to play a game like this. sad but complaining wont change anything.I may not be the best but, I’ll be dammed if i’m not real good. I played in my youth along side CVS2 and GGXX. And in my late 20 and early 30’s I was at the top of southern Japans best players. So I will always have a soft spot for the game in my heart. With the advent of 3SO I tried to teach the new kids about the game. At the same time, the kids are the future, are they gonna put forth the effort for a rewarding victory. or take the easy route and play a newer more popular and prevalent game?(not knocking new capcom games, don’t flame me). Ya mean? Times change, I wanna stay relevant in today’s times. That’s why I wanna play KOF 13 and BBCS:EX. now if CVS 2 get a remake , holla at me!!!

CVS3: C groove now Comeback groove

Man that would suck. Shitty 3d graphics with super strong come back bull shit. The game that wins for you, no need to play, juts turn it on and win!! Makes me sad,but oh well its a sign of the times. Gaming is big business and business means big bucks. With the attention span of dust, new gamers arnt gonna stick with a game after months of gettin their ass kicked in the arcade like we did. Well I know I did. Good game skillz are transferable to other games. Old or new. Shouts out to all my KOF players out there on the grind, I see you baby!!

Viola is bad character design? And ZWEI? The new lizard man? They all look awesome. Young Cervantes too. You guys are picky.

New Taki looks like a damn naruto fan girl though.

Soul Crapibur ahoy! NC’s most vehement SC hater has arrived!

I’ll probably pick up SC5 because I’m a shameless consumer whore when it comes to fighting games, for the most part. But simply put, I have no faith in Namco, especially Team Soul, when it comes to making a good SC game. SC2 is one of the most loved incarnations of the game, if not the most loved, and that game sucks. A boring, turtle friendly game where Step basically dominates everything. The game is so boring at high level that top players threw matches just to avoid putting crowds to sleep and killing their own brain cells in the process. SC3 was a step in the right direction, it went somewhat more back towards SC1 with the de-emphasizing of Step (return of tracking B attacks? Step is CH state? Actual oki? Yes please!). Unfortunately, SC3 was the game that was basically ruined by the cruddy SC community, due to their reluctance to ban what was obviously a retarded glitch that gave one character a huge advantage. Of course, Namco helped by releasing versions that were progressively updated across different regions (aka if you live in the US, sucks to be you, cuz you have the worst version of the game), culminating in SC3 Arcade, a slower and cleaned up game that is apparently pretty good and had a good run in Japan, but was never ported to any consoles. In an era where the arcade is basically dead in America, that was a sure fire death blow to the scene. Then you have SC4, which just sucks. I can’t go into detail here because I got out fast. In fact, I think SC4 is the only fighting game, other than the newest Mortal Kombat, that I have ever sold back to the store. But just to emphasize, Hilde being stupid, idiots thinking it was okay to allow multiple button maps in order to take advantage of a Hilde glitch that allowed you to charge her moves while keeping the buttons free to use, basically completely circumventing a game mechanic in an outside manner…and that’s about it. You really don’t have to say any more than that.

That being said, Maxi is supposedly really good, and the game has a lot of new 2D fighter elements, which I like. Hopefully those changes will make it more interesting and help to set it apart from other 3D fighters. Just, let Tekken be the serious fighter, Namco. Give up already.

Well the turtling issue in SC2 was there because of the lack of a guard bar. Now that you can get guard broken and eat a super combo, you can’t just sit there and block all day. I’m not sure how good step is now but hopefully the quick step is counter hit state. I feel like soul calibur needs a stamina bar though, game always gets dominated by the quick pixie characters while slow characters like Nightmare get shit on because he gets 2A’d out of everything and has the same health as say… Cassandra.

I was happy they were taking out Sophitia and Cassandra but they’re just reincarnated into lamer versions of their previous selves now.

But either way, I think a lot of the new system mechanics will make the game more exciting and reward offense. I like that guard impacting costs meter now but guarantees damage. People spamming guard impacts was annoying, and then correctly getting one and not getting anything for the risk kind of sucked. I’m just hoping the game doesn’t turn into who can combo into their super the most safely / characters with assists shitting on everyone.

I’d be happy if Quick Step had near-identical properties to Defensive Move in VF.

As for the 2A’ed out of everything, I’m thinking Just Guard will be the counter to that.
Also Nightmare’s CE is a counter, which should help also.

I played a version of SC5 at NEC and I thought it was a blast. I myself don’t know nearly enough about high level SC play but I am interested in playing the game. Everyone I talked too seemed pretty excited about the game for various reason and I heard it compared to each previous version of soul caliber. In retrospect I wish I had played it some more, I only played Ezio while I was there.
