I think SC’s meter was inspired more by MK then SF4.
Let’s put it this way, I suspect DOA will be a better game then SFvsTK.
SC3- I got to play the arcade version a couple of times over the years and it seemed pretty fun. I wish they’d release that on PSN/XBLA. I’ve always liked the Soul series, and I even liked SC4 until I learned the hard way that my characters were unviable.
I don’t really see how 5 is the Soul Calibur version of SF4. If anything, the game got more complicated than previous iterations… but I think that’s good because it really did boil down to 3-5 move characters without a lot of variety at higher levels sometimes. The meter management should add a lot of depth. Like Arstal though, I’m kinda worried about Just Guard… that mechanic has sucked in every game it’s been in, IMO atleast. Oh, my shit is randomly unsafe for no reason that I had any control over, awesome!
I haven’t really seen it done much in videos though, so maybe the timing is pretty tight. Hopefully it’s mostly useful on just punishing predictable strings.
The SF4 comparison was only in regards to making certain characters/moves (ex. Most Ivy stuff, Yoshi iMCF) more accessible, don’t read too much into it.
Jon, the timing for JG is tight (I believe it’s a few frame window on the release of the G press), and meant to give more reward if you try it on harder-hitting attacks.
The SC3 communities screwed it up when they didn’t ban certain things, plus there were a couple versions that came out after US got console SC3, so we were behind with no way to get the current versions. That’s the short of it really.
Edit: OH yeah, Step G and 22G too. And my friend tocool showed me this
Just Guard systems are fine when implemented properly. See GG (as usual) for a reference. Just Defend in CvS2 is another example of a system that was advantageous, but not to a ridiculous extent.
Just Guard sounds fine I like how it is activated by releasing guard which makes it seem more risky, then at the start of guard. Does anyone have the details for exactly how many frames it removes yet?
I softbanned 22G by pausing and quitting the game the moment you did that shit.
Man, 2012 does not look like a good year at all for fighting games, or the scene.
Oh well, at least I have Final Round to look forward too. I guess needed more incentive to get out and actually make some money next year.
I don’t do New Year’s Resolutions, though.
It’s basically Just Defend, gives you less blockstun by a bit. You have to tap guard then release, and you can’t just tap on and off supposedly. You can’t just hold guard and then release to get it.
People are saying the SF4 thing just because they added a super meter and cinematic supers. The system seems more MK-ish myself.
I don’t get the bitching about 2012 at all- VF is coming out, which I am hype for, and SC5 and Skullgirls I have real interest in.
The only game I expect to suck outright this year is SF vs TK.
As for the scene, as long I’m liking what I’m playing, I don’t care about what the “scene” does.
SFxT could be good if Capcom just wanted to make a fun fighting game. I still love Super Gem Fighter and will play it any time of the day. I just feel that they’re trying to make a competitive game with uncompetitive aspects. Its okay to sell a really cool fighting game that will get bought for the sake that its really fun to play.
They should of just said something more like that then. Any mentioning of “that other game” could have been left out. Maybe since so many people are crazy over “that other fighting game” it could be their market strategy to get more people to buy SC5. shrugs
KOF XIII and Tekken 6 right now along with MBAA:CC coming out soon. SC5, VF, TTT2, DOA5 (3D is back in the house!), along with BB:CS:Ext, Persona 4, Skullgirls, SFxT, and a few other independent projects coming out within 2012. I can’t think of any other time so many, especially 3D, fighting games were to come out in the same year.
The game is still fun and good, just the people behind the community who screwed up the scene for it. Just because the scene screwed up doesn’t mean people have to get mad at the game. Its still a great fun game regardless. That and VF4 Evolution.
When they first introduced Just Guard you pressed G at the last second. Daishi n’ gang thought that was a little too easy so they changed it to tapping and releasing. It’s pretty much a softer parry than 3rd Strike’s. 3S is one of Daishi’s favorite fighting games (the other being GG). He admitted he put JG in to create scenarios like that of the Wong/Daigo match @ Evo '04.
Yeah, Doug’s right. What I meant by “Soul Calibur version of Street Fighter IV,” is that it’s more accessible. A ton of stances have been taken out. Some moves that had difficult inputs are now just a direction and a standard button and some moves have returned to their simpler SC1 forms.
And the quote I used was said by Bibulus from 8wayrun.com when he was interviewing Daishi Odashima (SC5 director). Daishi responded he wanted the game more accessible to other players and Bibulus sarcastically responded “So you made the Soul Calibur version of Street Fighter IV?” And they both laughed.
Uh, that IS pretty much what they (as in Namco) have been saying all this time. The SF4 comparison was one interviewer’s (somewhat sarcastic) take on it, not anybody from Namco’s take on it.
If you play UMvC3 you should check out or play on the Peaceful Jay Stream. It’s XBOX and it’s usually on 24 hours. I’m up there pretty often. xKONFUCIOUSx
When I was playing in the SRK Live stream before I got to play Dios X. He beat me multiple times prior on ranked but I was able to get two in a row on him when he came on the stream.
The only 3d fighter I care about is VF, and nobody’s going to play it.
On the trail set by Heroes & Heralds, SFxT might be the game that kills off the fighting game genre for good, and replaces it with the CCG fighting genre. Plus the game is going to be pure hot garbage.
Skullgirls might be decent, but again nobody’s going to play it, and the game looks pretty damn homogeneous to me.
The animu/indie games are whatever. You RDU guys talk up BB and MB all the time but nobody really gets off their ass to travel and enter tournaments for them and get hype. When people who don’t even play your game get 10x more hype than most of the actual players about the finals of your game, there’s a problem. But I know at least some in the state will play any given Airdash >5-Hit Combo Extended Generic 3-Handled Moss-Covered Credenza Fighter X and talk about it all the time.
Some people will play VF. Priest plays in Charlotte, I’ll play, there was some guy in Fayetteville on VFDC who had a solid Aoi, I suspect many of the new blood will play also. If you can’t find locals, go online, VF5’s online on 360 was great.
As for Skullgirls, It will have an online scene even if it doesn’t become the next big thing, it’s got too much hype and good enough netcode not to. If I don’t like it, no big deal, I’ve got SC/KOF and will get BB in that case.
As long as I like something between now and VF, this is going to be the best year in terms of me actually liking fighting games in years.
