I've played video games since I owned a NES in elementary school. I've been playing fighting games since I played SF2 in the arcade and got it on the SNES. However, I am now 29 years old, have a fiance, a house, and have started my career for a few years. I've passed my prime and have decided that I'm not TRULY trying to obtain an evo championship (Now, that doesn't mean I'm not going to compete in one). I just don't have the time that's required to ensure my precision, combo knowledge, tech, etc are in order and can be perfectly executed under pressure. However, I've always been way better than my friends at these type of games....I live for the competition- so I sought out the best local competition. I've always believed that as long as your mind games and knowledge of BnB punishes are in order you can be competitive enough to have fun.
The reason I bring this up, I've shown up to a few of your gatherings and love the competition.....However, it's obvious that some of you take it a lot more serious than I do, and for good reason, I'm sure some of you have a goal in mind that you're looking to obtain. While, I'm looking just for a few good, lagless matches, and some good laughs, many of you are looking to sharpen your skills....and can't do that against brass. I just wanted to check to make sure that I'm not insulting anyone with my approach to playing with you guys. If I am, here's my explanation and hopefully you don't mind. If you do, fuck you, I can take my gummy candy elsewhere. lol
Everyone here has there own reasons to play. The majority of people these days don’t even travel outside the state or expect to win EVO because that’s just not how they roll with the games they play. Some people do it for the social aspect, for the fun of it and so on. Personally I don’t think a gamers skills really affect the way I perceive them in that way. I mean we have some good players here in NC and some not so great ones but overall that’s what makes up a community is everyone’s individual abilities and skills.
Yeah the arcade that was on the 3rd floor where the food court was shut down a while back. I haven’t been to the new arcade that was opened yet, but friends told me there is KoF XI, MvC2, MvC1, VF, Tekken 5, and SNK vs Capcom.
I’m going to try to check that place out before I move back to NC State this weekend.
Dude, who are you and what gatherings do you attend? I really want to play some matches with you and talk as well. Even though I’m looking towards getting better and competing in big tournaments myself, first and foremost I want to have fun with it all. Anyone who just wants to have fun hanging out playing some fighting games is cool in my book. Skill level is not required. I’ve seen too many people who practice day and night, come out to a tournament or somewhere, then complain or become irate about so many things besides their lack of skill. Its just a game. Have fun. You seem like a really cool person who understands that there are more important things to worry about in life than being good at a video game. Hope to meet you soon bro and good luck with all your future endeavors.
More important than being good at video games? THERE IS NOTHING!
Nah for me the fun is in trying to get better, seeing yourself improve, and the challenge. Lately I’ve been in the mindset of if I’m going to do something, then do it right. I have fun playing with everyone and chilling but I don’t see harm in also trying to beat their asses and level up at the same time. I don’t understand why you would play a competitive fighting game and post on a competitive fighting game forums when you’re " just playing for fun ". Half the fun of these games is only when you really understand them and have all the tools at your disposal. It’s like… trying to play chess and only knowing how to use pawns. You’re missing out on the real game.
I’ve met you a few times, I think a few times at the Gamerdoc thing and maybe a few times at Keith’s (seasofcheese). I always had fun playing you, but i’m not great or anything. I think you played 'sim and Guy, right? or at least at the time.
even though i haven’t been on much lately, feel free to add me on psn or xbl: aae0819
Pretty sure I took off for that tournament but yea lets hype that shit up. I’m pretty excited. Still working on bringing a new guy to the crowd, MK/BB player though but it could always help.
Some people do find enjoyment playing locally with other players and attending a tournament here and there perhaps. I’m the type of person that if you’re good at a fighting game, I’ll play you. If you’re bad at a fighting game, I’ll still play you. Skill level is not required to have fun for me. If I need to get all serious I’ll save it up for the tournament. I’d rather meet new people and have a few laughs here and there over random funny stuff, then step into the place to try and prove my dominance over everyone. I don’t care how good a person is at a video game or how many matches/tournaments they may have won, that doesn’t win them respect as a human being if their going to be a jerk to others.
EDIT: This wasn’t aimed at anyone just in case someone started to feel it may have been.
Where in my post did I say be a jerk to others over it? Real Life is separate from the fights in game. I’m just saying, you’re missing out with that mentality. Being serious about a game doesn’t turn you into a hateful machine bent on defeating everyone in your way at the expense of all personal relationships. It just means… you know, you put a little effort into it.
