I don’t intend to “Roski” at your post, but here are my thoughts. Friendly thoughts, mind you

It’s always strange how people interpret comments/“hate” when it comes to 3rd strike. As if it’s a touchy subject or some shit… some holy grail of fighting game ceremony. Whatever. Here’s why some might over-react to those quickly spoken criticisms:

3rd strike was a highlight in many of our fighting game careers but it was destroyed by the influx of stupidity that came with Street Fighter 4, save all of the AMAZING benefits that came along with it. It’s exciting for us hipsters that the game that gave us such good memories and times with each other is coming back and could potentially be what it once was or better.

NC 3rd strike has a history of doing QUITE well with the following characters: Yang (Myself), Makoto (Knuckledust/Roski), Dudley (COMMONSENSE), Alex(Saisyu), Chun-Li (face), Ibuki (josh), Hugo (Myself), Yun (Frank). Looks like a character select screen to me /shrug.

Hit confirming in SF4 can amount to mashing a DP and getting an ultra, which you gained because you were getting your ass beat. PLENTY of time to react and “hit confirm” (or should we say mash confirm  the follow up ultra or whatever follows. This could be compared to Chun-Li back fierce/low forward > SA2 hit confirm, which isn’t terribly difficult but in comparison to the above mentioned… much more difficult. But there’s also more that goes into hit confirming in 3rd strike. It goes into many questions of interactions between two people which most of the newer games don’t have to offer. That’s what really makes 3rd strike a meaningful game, the lightning bolt intense interaction between two people.

Personally I gained an incredible amount of “fame” playing SF4, but I’d quickly trade my name in SF4 for the times I had in an apartment with edmondantes taking his money in 3rd strike. I went in there with 3$'s, left with 50$ between him and Lao. Gooooood times

Again, not trying to persuade you to play but offer you an understanding of our love for the game… but you should play cause it’s a good game. See? … http://playthirdstrike.com/

With all the talk about fighting games becoming an esport, here’s something from SRK on the subject:

Also, is there anyone from the RDU area going to Gamefrog Saturday? Looking for someone to ride with.

This is my main reason for playing. Nostalgia basically. I never got into playing it on the PC etc. So, once it left the arcades around here I was left with nothing. I’ve come 2 auction losses away from having a 3S cabinet in my house. I played plenty of fighting games before it (Soul Edge, Samurai Showdown, Battle Arena Toshinden, Mortal Kombat, Tekken, Alphas, Primal Rage, Killer instinct), but 3S was the first fighting game where my age, maturity, and understanding came together and I went from simply spraying and praying to actually strategy within my gameplan.

In short, it’s just nice to have it conveniently at my fingertips with an online (and hopefully local) community to compete with, and one where the game doesn’t almost freeze when Oro jumps into the air.

Damn DP, that was beautiful man. I want those times back.

I also want to add that in 3S many characters can be played in several styles. I really feel like no two people play the same character the same way. Let’s take me and Roski for example. I think a lot of the top players around here would say fighting the both of us is night and day. Save for a few tricks and shenanigans that have to be implemented on certain characters as far as character specific strats go. Roski is a really good solid player as anyone knows and it’s reflected in all of as his game play. I would argue that he has some of the best, if not the best zoning in the game. As a result his makoto is very thought out and methodical. A smart zoning makoto with spurts of “what the fuck, how do I defend this.” Then there’s me. The running joke is that my mix up is command throw…command throw. I love me some question marks. Honestly a lot of my style came from watching Sex-Taro and his fearless rushdown. I saw that and thought, “that’s how I want to play.” Sometimes I feel like Roski shows respect to anyone new he plays and intelligently reads them. If I don’t know you, I’m gonna bulldog the shit out of you til you prove to me you can deal with it…and them I’m probably gonna still bulldog you. I think these styles are even evident in the characters we chose when 4 came out. Roski, Sagat, zoning. Tom, Abel,…command throws.

I know that’s long winded but eh. Another quick example. Chun-li. Amir = Rushdown Chun. Justin Wong = Defensive Chun.

Small pool of characters, Several way to play them.

The big picture is. There are so many answers to any situations in this game. It’s a good game.

Looking at the NC third strike players is like a half frozen homeless guy looking in on a happy family eating dinner on christmas eve while he eats his can of SF4 beans. You guys all seemed like you had so much fun with it.

But yeah like I said I was never knocking the game, I got nothing but respect for it. Just don’t want to play catch up for forever when we got stuff like KOF 13 and UMVC3 and SFxT on the horizon in which case I will have wasted my time lol. Plus Marvel is my true love. Game is beautiful beautiful chaos. I like 3S better than SF4 if that makes you feel better :china:

I just don’t think 3SO will be 3S’ rebirth back into the scene. It’ll be that game people download, play some matches to reminiscence about the good times, then turn back to the current games in the FGC. Maybe time will tell. I’d like to play a lot of the NC players in it if it was actually that hype before at one time. Which reminds me, who is Lucrene? I’m seriously on a manhunt for that guy.

It wouldn’t be reminiscence, Many of NC’s top players still actively practice the game as well as play the new ones. If you had found fighting games sooner than you have you’d know that 3S was the game that would get the most entrants per tourney before 4 came out. To say it was hype at one time is an understatement. Hype for about 5 or 6 years is probably more accurate.

Another comment about “esports”.

The editorial “are fighting games the next esport?” is well written and makes some good points but I think the authors fears are misplaced. I don’t think for street fighter to become “mainstream” that it has to lose it’s identity and what it’s about.

Look at the FGC in its current state. There are sponsorships already, which create something akin to “teams.” However, these players have already had to face each other, and are still friends with players on other “teams.” It’s no different than many other sports where players are friends off the court, but play their hearts out against each other during the playoffs. Does the author think basketball started out as the NBA? No, it started with some friends throwing a ball at a basket, creating relationships out of competition. To say that Street Fighter has something better to preserve than todays popular sports is insulting to those that aspire to play their respective sport on a bigger level and to those that just play it for the workout and fun.

I think the community that wants FGs to succeed as an “esport” is hoping their favorite hobby levitates to the next level of legitimacy. Maybe it’s out of a need for validation, or a desire to see their favorite hobby accepted by the masses, whatever the reason I don’t think it’s a “Betrayal” to the origin of the scene. That’s a long jump to that conclusion.

Now, while I disagree that FGs becoming an “esport” is a bad thing, I do still think it wont happen. Again, I revert back to the, oh so important, casual viewer (they are the majority typically- so you must respect them).

A casual viewer doesn’t understand the underlying intelligence and strategy that a street fighter is putting into the game, JUST like they don’t understand the ridiculous amount of strategy that goes into play choices etc on the football field.

There is one big difference though. It is still possible to see the amazing feats of athleticism that has to be performed to execute the strategy laid out by the coach. With street fighter there has to be excellent execution as well, but it’s execution that you don’t see, and only truly appreciate as a player yourself.

There are other examples, but I think this one alone is crippling enough to keep FGs at the level they are now, and not much further.

Now I do think it’s possible that something like “esports olympics” occurs, where many of the competitive video games that reach the same level as FGs are brought together and put on a stage. While, it may seem like a bigger step it’s really no different than watching swimming those few days during the summer olympics- it just doesn’t go much further than that.

Maybe I’m wrong…HOPEFULLY I’m wrong.

:wtf:

you SURE you want to MM him lol?

I played 3rd Strike in the arcades the week it dropped. I was the ONLY person for like a solid year I ever saw touch that machine. A year after that, 3rd Strike was suddenly the 2nd most popular game, behind only MvC2.

Funny how most 3S players never even played 2nd Impact.
Also funny how 3S players love the game for stuff that’s already in plenty of other games, but they like to pretend it’s somehow exclusive to 3S for some reason.

3s in NC has the nostalgia factor of SF2 most places in the rest of the country.

Oh yeah!? Well, that thing you did? I did it FIRST, back when no one cared about it. And it was much harder when I did it than when you did it.

@Mike, Sorry man I tried to reply on the thread and kept gettin a error screen?? Thanks to everybody who made it out to Sal-T Thurdsays this week. GG to all, lots of fun and laughs too. Got in some good VampireSavior matches/AE/and old school Marvel Super Heroes and MVC2 action.(Man I forgot how to play thoes games)(-_-")Bipson was on point in AE last night. Finally got my TE Stick so now its on!lol Shouts out to leveling up in Vindictus late night and just now gettin back from EZ at 8:30 AM!!!

Like I said, time will tell. It’s just that I believe there will be a large number of people who say they play it, but it’ll probably be the same small group that only play exclusive at the secret “lab.” I’m hoping I’m wrong about this because I really want to play people in that game, especially after how good I heard NC was at it. I’m pretty sure there are some people who play GG, just not around for me to witness. Was surprised at the number of people I saw at the last EZ tourny.

And yes, I am seriously looking for Lucrene. I’m not gonna talk trash on the forums and hide behind a screen. I’m not saying Lucrene is doing that since he’s probably busy with other things, but I am starting to grow tired of all the big talk on the forums and the nice attitudes when you meet the same people in real life. Besides, I’ve started to notice that I’m posting more than I’m playing now. Kinda hard for anyone to take you serious if that’s the case. Back to the dojo.

Lucerne will kill you with eloquence and then use your corpse to make tea.

Actually I’m not sure he even plays fighting games. I think this is just troll training mode for him.

Get bodied? I was getting bodied before you even had a body.

@ Sofa_King

Lucerne is just my troll account, I thought everyone knew that. So when do you want to MM?

I think Lucerne stole Gooteck’s eloquence.

Gootecks: “… wow”

Happens like 8 times.

Im hype about it… because ive been playing ggpo and stuff… but doesnt really mean much except playing with julian , preist , and shiki every once in a while… but when I FIRST got on the scene my first and favorite was 3rdstrike … I was 16 at the time… didnt know much… had my little chunli ps2 pad… eah the udon one… and i was getting my ass beat… but loved it… because i knew it was soo hard to do over half the stuff in the game… then i met this coffee vamp named Roski… and he really opened his arms to the community… and ive been learning and playing ever since

Just my story for 3s

It’s the same for me, just because I wasn’t a top player during the 3S reign doesn’t mean I don’t I have a nostalgia trip when playing it. When I first learned about the FG scene I was trying to play every FG under the sun at one time. Eventually I settled on 3S cause I realized that it was the main one being played in NC. Now when I say I was bad at 3S, I mean I was really bad back then. Most of the community had no idea who I was outside of being a post whore online, and most of the Fayetteville scene didn’t really associate with me cause of my maturity level (I was like 15-16 and headstrong at the time). Even in that situation I would still continue to go to the arcades every day and message people even if I knew I wouldn’t get a response.

So in short when I play 3S it just reminds me of how I started and how I got to where I am today. It’s not all pleasant memories but it’s what helped me grow. I’m just excited to play it again and see how I fare now with the knowledge I have as opposed to back then.

3S, along with GG, was the beginning of NC becoming a recognized area in fighting games on the east coast. It was the first game I was really competitive in on a national level, and one of the only games in existence that this state has the talent to be a force in. The names Jibbo mentioned all had the potential to take anyone out at a major (who remembers DP taunting Gootecks en route to that team tournament victory?), and between all of us we had what we needed to keep on getting better. The problem is that there are tons of new players who will say they want in, then when they get in and see how much the game DOESN’T give them for free, they’ll go right back to SSF4 and MVC3, where getting hit only makes you more dangerous.

When weren’t you?
