Oh yeah, is Austin moving permanently from NC now? If that’s the case then it was great meeting you Austin and maybe our paths will cross again in the future. Until then, see you later bro.
Hope to see everyone else this Saturday.

Lookin forward to meeting everyone at gamefrog. I hope somebody can teach me mvc I really wanna learn that game. And about mk9 I’m pretty sure enough people play it im totally down for it
Football has rules changes every year. Sometimes big changes. Nothing huge like making a touchdown worth 8 points instead of 6, but they do have changes. Having rules changes isn’t going to hurt, as long as the changes are good.
As for 3SO, I really don’t think it’s going to last that long, as there won’t be enough new players. People are going to buy the game, get raped by Yun and Chun, then go back to AE. The people who will stick with 3SO are the same people who’ve stuck with 3S for years.
I don’t think a rebalance would have worked- you would have had a split community, and the bitching would have been worse then HDR.
I think as long as you have a commentator that understands the game well enough to the point that they can kind of explain what is going on screen, the minimal stuff for new spectators and someone who is able to compliment that guy by talking about the advanced parts then I think it will be fine. You just need to have a good team really, and unlike sports commentators we don’t get paid. I’m sure if it moved to that level it wouldn’t be hard. The concept of a fighting game is easy to understand, it has to be. It’s a game, it involves fighting, most of the time 1v1, you get the other guys life bar down to 0 and win. At the base that’s all it is. Then you slowly weed the new viewers into understanding some more of what is going on because i’ll tell you that zoning someone out isn’t going to be a new concept to sports fans (unless they watch less team sports and more single sports).
“A Flurry of Attacks!!!”
Eh…not really. Especially in the NFL.
Rule changes, the advent of television, significant size increases of players (NFL players on average are MUCH bigger right now than they were even 20 years ago), and a developed metagame (back in the day, rushing all day everyday was king. Only within the last 20 years has the passing game surpassed running in the NFL) have all been contributing factors to how the game is played.
Yeah, on a basic level not much changed, and from Pee-Wee – High School the game is mostly the same.
It’s only when you get to the higher levels (NCAA and NFL) where forces even outside the game itself ($$$ and all the corruption, gambling, politics, and business shit that inevitably gets involved) have changed it. Although even High School has started to be affected by it.
Same deal with Street Fighter. Although high-level SF doesn’t have a problem with gambling and/or corruption…YET.
The reason 3Soe is a big deal is because it’s no longer an emulated arcade game being used on systems of varying quality. Imagine if you will if there were millions of different CPS3 boards that had varying rates of processing power. There is no standard to go by. While anything street fighter 3 related plus online is generally ass, GGPO netcode over xbl and psn should be more tolerable. If you need any proof that you can get good playing online none need look further than NicaKO. He’s a monster and learned from GGPO 3S. I can’t play computer 3S for shit but he was beast on PC and Arcade when I hung out with him in California a couple years back.
There’s also the swarm of new players that don’t really know about 3S that might get interested. Although I’m with arstal that many will quit and just play 4 exclusively. Not because Yun and Chun are assholes, but because the system is pretty fucking difficult to get a grasp on. No shortcuts, no absolute guard, no mashing throw techs, and the big one: parries. Oh and lets not forget too that hit confirms are VERY IMPORTANT in 3S. Many people I used to play with regularly in Fayetteville did not have this ability, and I think when this game was at it’s prime, I would say that maybe only a quarter of the people that played it in this state had a firm handle on hit confirming in 3S. Paying attention to normals hitting and then blowing a dude up with a super or link combo is a lost art. It exists in the new games sure, but it’s not life or death like it is in 3S.
Hmmmm out of curiosity is 3rd strike the only game you never played serious? I mean ive seen you play SF4, Blazblue, Guilty Gear, Melty, Arcana, Tekken, ST, everything under the son but Third Strike. Why is that? Why do you only bash that game? Has to be a reason. On top of that you have held your own in all these games. Anyway I like to see those skills you got branch off into 3rd Strike. Your beast in all those other games so why not this one?
Didn’t get requested day off, no gamefrog for me. Sorry guys =(
He didn’t bash the game, he’s asking why people are so eager to get into 3S now as opposed to learning it on GGPO, or on PS2 at sessions in the last couple of years.
Which Knuckledust answered, though.
Like shiki said, I’m not bashing 3S with my question, was just curious why there’s hype since nothing is available to us that wasn’t before. Advertising is impressive in it’s ability to manipulate people’s thoughts and push them into thinking a certain way about something. If you step back from it though and think about it, you’re not really getting anything other than what tom mentioned (a uniform system to run it on).
Also with the 3S hipster comment I wasn’t bashing it then either before, was just making fun of the groups of people that are always like “this sucks play 3S” in regards to everything. “I played good fighting games before fighting games were popular”.
I appreciate the compliments but 3S has a lot of stuff I just don’t like honestly. A very small group of characters to pick from if you want to compete, none of which I like, a large skill gap between it’s current players and new people that would be getting in, difficult system to pick up, one that requires dedication and true love for the game to really get anywhere with. I play a lot of games now because games now are easy to pick up and just play, and I like that. I don’t think difficult hit confirming or links add much to a game TBH other than being impressive when someone pulls it off. 3S is a very impressive game in regards to what is required to be proficient at it, but it’s just not something I really care about. I’d be picking a character I don’t like, not really caring about the game, and getting bodied by people that have been playing it seriously for almost a decade. Just can’t get behind that is all.
For the record though, I played 3S an assload in high school before people even acknowledged it as a good game. Funny how it’s flip flopped and now it’s considered one of the best lol
hate to break up a good discussion but who here plays touhou fighters?
Hey Sal, I was gonna drop off my stuff at your place (Asus monitor, xbx and one stick for each system) and then show up when me and my dad get done painting the house. If that’ll work for you, then let me know on here or pm me. If anyone has his number, txt him 4 me (no phone still cuz I’ma bum lol)
The 24 hour session is BACK 10pm Saturday until… Need to have a couple things ironed out, i do not care what anybody does but do NOT open my refrigerator without asking, and the dedicated bathroom for guests is on the 2nd floor. And if you have a laggy ass monitor Leave that shit home please. There is also a patio on the 2nd floor for people to go outside and smoke. And again if you need to crash let me know before hand and its all good. I will have a dedicated setup for AE and 3s everyone can bring what they want, there is plenty of space. post up edit: AE will be on Xbox and i only have 1 stick per system, just put my ex2 to rest.
GGPO on the PC is a hack. It’s running arcade code that was never meant to handle networking, and it shows under certain conditions like with ungraceful rollbacks. 3SOE will offer a version of the game that’s coded with GGPO in mind, and will also probably not have to deal with GGPO’s horrible matchmaking server. Furthermore, being able to play it on a console and on an HD monitor without 480i upscaling is always a plus.
By the way, NFL rules change pretty much every year, like this year they’re moving the kickoff line from the 30 to the 35.

[]Couple of things here to say. Fighting games making it big as E-Sports, I could see this. After watching the Evo stream you’d pretty much have to have keep the announcers they had from the various top 8’s. As much as I appreciate hearing announcers talk like is in terms of cursing up a storm and such thats not something you can have broadcast to the general public. As far as rule changes keeping people from watching, I really don’t buy that. 3 of the 4 major sports change or update their rules nearly every offseason so I wouldn’t see that as a major detractor. The only thing that I could say would keep the scene down are the actual games themselves. Take the T6 top 8 for example, I usually enjoy watching Tekken for the most part but the lack of anything other than Law or Bob kinda killed my buzz for that part of the stream. Strangely enough I could have almost saw the same thing happen in the AE Finals which I thought was the best one to watch. My gut is telling me that if Daigo or Kindevu would’ve won with his Yun I wouldn’t have really cared to much afterwards or been that tuned into the top 8, not because its Daigo/Kindevu but more or less because it was Yun. In short, as long as the game allows it to where a good number of characters and styles can be played competitively the better the interest will be.
[]As for 3SO, I’m looking foward to it because I don’t have a stick to play it any other way, period. LOL

Another problem with 3s on GGPO emulators was CPS3 emulation was hacked into FBA meaning the GGPO netcode had to send SHITLOADS of junk data every frame just to run. This made playing anyone with a ping over 50ms near intolerable, while you could play people with much higher pings just fine on a CPS2 or Neo-Geo game.
SSSSIIIIICCCCCKKKKK!!! Tom and I will try to make it out to this one for sure.
