I’m tired of not being able to go to any of these and it looks like Lucky’s will a=only come around every once in a while. If I could set up tournaments in W-S or Kvegas how many of you would go?
by ws do you mean winstin? dont know what kvegas is but im down if your doing them in winstin.
Someone make me a Makoto Avatar that’s forward color from 3S thanks.
Looks like i’ll most likely be in attendance to all 3 NC tournaments this month, just trying to work out plans for the ReSe tournament. Kind of hope it works out, at the very least Gamefrog on the 13th and EZ for sure.
Ive been playing 3s 2 months straight… and the stuff tom showed me really helped… im down…
Good shit man, we’re still getting situated here, but it should be within the month. I’m liking the hunger some people have been showing me for 3S. We’ll be in thurr soon.
Anyone got any thoughts on the article about eSports and the EVOlution of it? For one, while it’s an OK article, I don’t understand why people keep saying it’s so powerful. Maybe because it’s about their favorite hobby? I mean, it’s KIND of written well. Transitions are sloppy etc. Anyways, here’s a couple thoughts that I had on the whole things:
I think there is one major point missing that will never allow fighting games to make it big in sports-
Casual viewers.
Think of how many people watch American Football who really don’t understand the rules. However, the game (Like most sports) is built in a way that makes it easy to understand AND to see who’s winning, when they score, etc. It’s easy for the casual viewer who knows nothing about the sport, or the players who are playing, to celebrate with their teams accomplishments. The viewer is given something that, in essence, to them is meaningless and turns it into a competition, and pride, and joy.
It’s much more difficult to gain that from a fighting game. ESPECIALLY a game like marvel. Who’s in the lead? Oh, did they just make a good move? Who’s getting hit right now?
Now there’s one sport that penetrated that barrier and that’s poker. But poker is played at such a slow pace that people could piece together that someones hand was good, when someone paired cards…I mean, cards is an ancient game, so everyone knows it. But poker is viewed lopsidedly by men…and you know you need the men AND the women to really make your sport take off. Which is why poker has kind of died off lately.
I just think fighting games and “eSports” in general has a bigger mountain to climb before we’re watching it on ESPN…if ever. Although I would love it.
Personally I like that fighters have storyline. Sucks that in KOF they bring in this cool character and then kill them off. I also like the Tekken storyline and how they even gave TTT 1 and 2 one kinda, even if the storyline for those two games don’t really matter. I feel the storyline makes the character more personal for you and makes you want to play that character more because they may have an interesting story behind them. The only reason I cared to beat all the Tekkens with every single character was to unlock their ending in hopes of gaining more information about them. Also, the main reason I like Shiki in Melty Blood is primarily because of his storyline. Without that I wouldn’t have any real attachment to that character.
Although I don’t think Wang is gonna make it to 7 (I thought he said something about him not having long to live and entering the 6th tournament one last time for some reason) I was starting to speculate they may carry over from TTT2 the fountain of youth for Heihachi. They might even give him some new moves and mix up his play style some since he would be younger, meaning he could do more stuff back in his prime that we’ve never seen before. Then again I thought they were gonna bring Jun back in the form of Unknown, but that never happened. I’m still trying to figure out why they put both Eddy and Christie in the same game with Tekken 6 as separate characters. Its like having Forest and Marshall as separate characters in the same game.
With KOF I don’t know much about the storyline besides that Geese died, Terry felt bad and trained Rock, and that’s why Rock Howard has similar styles of Terry and Geese. Geese and Rugal where pretty cool characters imo, but I’m assuming they were boss characters and SNK felt that the boss didn’t need to continue in the storyline. I don’t have a problem with SNK mixing things up though since if they kept bringing you the same characters every game with no storyline you’d start to think why buy the next edition when its the exact same thing as the last one. At least as the storyline grows you feel so do the characters and yourself as you progress from game to game.
Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat I know both have a storyline, but I never cared much to really get into them. I did find it hilarious when I found out that Sagat has one eye because Dan’s father crushed it, which in return Sagat beat him to death. Guilty Gear, to me, had a great storyline that was just cut off too soon. With Blazblue there’s so much alternate time different dimension crap that no matter what happens they can just say it was an alternate universe or something and keep it moving.
I remember having a similar discussion with someone before about something like this. For the most part I personally believe that first you need really good commentators. And not those you see at EVO or Spooky that basically tell you what you just saw, but someone who explains the game as it progresses. Make it so that people who have never played/seen the game can understand and pick up on it quickly. Someone with no clue about how a 4v4 Halo tournament match works can pick up easy with the commentators in the MLG streams. I can’t remember the guy’s name but he commentates for StarCraft II matches. I’ve never played the game before, but he does an excellent job of getting people who have no clue as to what is going on interested and learning more about the game as they watch. Before anything else I feel that that ground should be covered first.
Jos or Jon, either one of you going to Gamefrog and/or EZ? Looking to carpool with someone if I can. Also to anyone else who is reading if you think you may have a spot let me know. I don’t mind chipping in for gas since carpooling helps lessen the price.
@Whoever can give me an answer: What system will the games at Gamefrog be on? Also, what is the entry fee and is the start time confirm 3pm (1500)? If so then I’m assuming sign up is at 2pm (1400). As long as Mapquest doesn’t screw me over again if I fail to find a ride I want to make it out there on time. I know its suppose to be easy to find, but I’m just afraid I might have sense of direction like Zoro from “One Piece” as soon as I get out there.
There was a big debate on these forums a few months back about how FGs could move forward attracting casual viewers, and the consensus was that FGs, out of all video game genres (except Sports, natch) is one of the EASIEST for casual viewers to follow.
If you’re a casual video game player, assuming you’ve never played either game and you happen to watch either a SF4 or Starcraft 2 tournament match, what do you think would be much easier to follow?
SF2 originally hit it HUGE in arcades (I don’t even think the current generation can fully understand how SF2 was EVERYWHERE back then) simply because: a) it was built for quick head-to-head competition and b) it was very easy and simple for everybody to understand on the basic level.
As for (a) the “quick” part is very important for television. It’s much better to have matches in short 2-3 minute burst than games where it can take up to 10 minutes before someone starts losing. The American viewing audience in our current society has been conditioned by media and advertising to be ADD monkeys and by and large is not trained to watch more than 10 straight minutes of footage at one time.
As for (b) I don’t think SF4 is intrinsically any harder to understand on a basic level than SF2 was…aside from all the subsystems like Focus and Ultras and whatever, the basic point is this: 2 people fight, 1 gets their ass kicked, and there’s 2 giant lifebars on the screen so everybody can tell when someone’s about to lose or just got HURT by a big attack.
It becomes a little harder in a game for Marvel where there’s 6 characters and shit flying everywhere on the screen and random shit keeps happening. I mean, I play Marvel regularly and even in EVO Top 32 there were times I didn’t know wtf was going on.
Geese actually isn’t dead in the current KOF storyline.
He IS dead in the KOF Maximum Impact storyline, which is an alternate reality to the main KOF canon.
Yes, it’s confusing.
Geese isnt dead.
Maximum Impact doesnt count (ugh) sorry i just FUCKING HATE it
TTT storyline isnt canon.
The reason there is a “young” Heihachi is because the voice actor of Heihachi died.
Ive already contacted Roski…im trying to go hard on 3S this time
How many of you guys are getting 3SOE? And for which system? I always PLAN on getting fighters for my xbox, 1) for the input lag on PS3, and 2) for the online lag on PS3.
BUT, if the majority of players are getting it on PSN, i’ll switch up.

The thing that worries me about fighting games as a spectator sport is that unlike Football, Soccer, and what not, the rules of the game are constantly changing. Grandparents can’t sit down with their grand kids and watch a Marvel match and be like “back when I was in college I played Marvel, I was the talk of the town sonny”. For me, that doesn’t matter since I keep up with fighting games and generally know whats going on when I watch a match in anything, but for the average viewer? I don’t know, maybe this part doesn’t matter, there’s always guys hitting each other and life bars… but if you’re not an active follower of fighting games, I imagine it’s easy to get left in the dust on this stuff. Fighting games are ever evolving… football, you have the same game you had 50 years ago.
I would absolutely love it though if it did get big. I think as long as they keep focusing on the human factor of it and keep up the quality commentating, it might make some progress. Plus… promote promote promote.
GGs at my place last night btw. Demo, I could definitely tell you went to the lab and practiced against the cheese I normally do, had to switch it up a bit last night to not get bodied lol. Good shit!
Also one question… why the hell is everyone hyped for 3SOE? Haven’t we had 3S on GGPO for years? With no rebalancing and basically the same shit available that was on GGPO… whats the big deal?
I heard about the unfortunate news a while back about the voice actor. It doesn’t matter for T2 to have a young Heihachi, but Tekken story wise Heihachi had been trying to obtain the power of the devil gene after the events of Tekken 2. After he failed to obtain the devil gene he sought out to resurrect Ogre so he could obtain his power from his blood in Tekken 3. In Tag2 the story behind young Heihachi is that after years of research on Ogre’s blood and the devil gene he was unable to obtain the power he wanted, but instead found a way to make himself young again. That could actually fit with the Tekken canon. They managed to bring Kazyua back out of a volcano.
Either way though the guy is pushing 80 and is still hardcore than ever. If he’s that good as an old man he’d clean house completely being in his prime. But mainly, the guy is pushing 80. We’ve seen the failed attempt on his life in Tekken 5, but I’m starting to think that not even death can kill this character. I figure they’ll give some reason to Heihachi’s passing besides he was too old if they leave him out of Tekken 7.
I’m not sure myself since I never really got competitive in it enough, but I heard there were issues with playing it on GGPO. Online wise anyway. It was crazy hard to parry due to lag and you couldn’t see all the frames or something. Plus for guys like me personally I never really use my PC to play fighting games, but I’m acquainted with 360 and PS3 so its an easy jump in it for me. Even though I’ve heard of GGPO before I never bothered with it for personal reasons and I wouldn’t be surprised if there were others like myself. By the time I hit Raleigh everybody was jumping on SFIV, which I disliked, so I stopped caring about 3S. Know that its coming back as 3SO and people are getting hype about it again I may actually jump on it again.
But that’s just my personal thoughts on the situation. Maybe someone with actual experience in the competitive scene of that game can give a better explanation.
