I dont see whats so confusing about KoF storyline or maybe im just a super SNK fanboy. People have to understand that the characters from the games represented dont follow their RESPECTIVE GAME’S STORYLINE. If so all the Art of Fighting characters would be much older because that game originally took place in the 70’s. Also Geese would be dead if they stuck to the FF story. Im not going to go into the detailed specifics of each game because the information is EASILY FOUND online but the KoF story format goes like this
KoF 94
KoF 95-97: Orochi Saga where pretty much every character tied to the resurrection died. so thats Goenitz, Orochi, Chris, Shermie, Yashiro, and Rugal
KoF 98 was a dream match with NO STORYLINE bringing together the characters from the Orochi Saga
KoF 99-01: Nests Saga where were introduced to the clones and we lost K9999 and the stupid bosses from this saga Krizalid, Zero, and Igniz.
KoF 02 was a dream match with NO STORYLINE bringing together the characters from the Nests Saga
KoF 03 and KoF XI are part of the Ash Saga
KoF XII was just KoF XII (a throwaway)
KoF XIII is the conclusion of the Ash Saga where a few characters will die more than likely
none of that Maximum Impact shit counts. And going by the storyline MotW is slowly coming up because its a few years in the very near future.
If theres a particular character you want to ask about I can tell you exactly where they are and if they are dead/have a chance of showing up again.
Sarcasm duly noted. Or is that a tinge of condescension with it lol.
Yes there is…some of them are actually pretty good. Some of us like to know the motivations/background of the characters we play instead of just letting tiers decide who we like.
Im not saying to EVER play a fighting game for its story, but people should stop dismissing the narrative as just a throwaway. There was an article written about this a few months ago that was showcased on the front page.
Kinda feel bad I didn’t go last time, one extra person coulda helped with numbers to run one…
Though you’ll be at EZ though right? I’m tryin my best to make that as well this month…
Not as long as some basement troll goes to the UmvC3 panel at fucking EVO and asks about endings for the old characters and the cameos therein.
Which was met with derision, laughter, and some subtle booing.
Dude is at the most competitive fighting game tourney in the world, talking with Nitsuma-San and Neo-G (the battle designer)… about fucking endings in a completely ridiculous crossover game like they’d be canon or something.
Stories and even the characters themselves are just fluff to what the actual game is. You could strip away all the models in SFIV down to wire frames, and it’d still be the same game.
And example is that I’m sure 90% of the megaman fanboys would be satisfied if you could select zero with start and got a megaman palette swap.
If you want a story, play an RPG or something. I’d rather the designers not waste time on endings and give us more characters or fucking spectator mode for god’s sake.

Except that MvC3 probably spent like 0.001% of its development time on the endings, so it’s not like it’s taking much away from the really important stuff.
Capcom not implementing Spectator Mode had nothing to do with the 30 minutes Frank Tieri spent one afternoon coming up with the “story” of the game.
You’re also ignoring the fact that since the story in KOF actually determines who gets to appear in the game and who doesn’t, that it DOES matter for KOF13.
Not to mention other games like Blazblue which wouldn’t have sold half as well as it did without its story mode that drew in a significant portion of the casual audience.
Fuck giving our fans what they want and making a better fighting game, SHIT’S GOTTA BE CANON!
In fact lets introduce awesome fan favorite characters like Oswald, Gato, Rugal, etc etc, but then not include them in our future titles because it doesn’t necessarily fit the story. Who are they making these games for anyway?
But it’s not the fact it was all a coherent and cohesive story that made people enjoy the story mode… if you play someone like Taokaka’s story, she learns Bang Install from bang after he dies and goes to avenge his death or something… none of that shit was canon… people just like something more in a fighting game that isn’t training / vs / arcade / options / title screen is all. Plus it’s anime and these kids love some anime.
Are you sure they aren’t failing due to supporting obsolete hardware?
Failing to capture a sizeable audience in the West due to maintaining their niche status in genres unpopular with mainstream audiences?
Spending 6 years of development on a 2-D fighting game?
Failing to develop any kind of adequate netcode for games people actually bought?
Hiring Falcoon as a DIRECTOR?
Wouldn’t you say the fact that the only profit that they are making right now is off of dating sims and pachinko games due to character/brand recognition signifies that character development and story actually is the one thing that they’re SUCCEEDING with?
Which is the dumbest thing KOF can do, in my opinion. Removing character styles/options in a fighter b/c a character is “dead” in the story is a step in the wrong direction.
What if I was a Rugal main and really enjoyed his playstyle?
“sorry, you’re SOL, gotta wait for the next dream match b/c he was killed by whatever random character”
I mean, the compomise option for the developers to give the “story” legitamacy and not remove characters would be to make the “dream match” characters unlockable or hidden, and perhaps not usable in story mode. None of the fanboys are gonna cry, trust me.
Stuff like Iori 98 being selectable instead of whatever the fuck version showed up in KOF12 is a good thing.
Should have stated ONE of… their practices are just all wrong, basically. It seems like they’re just too set in their ways and can’t adapt to what the times and what people require for this stuff to make money.
I kinda was thinking something along the lines of what robin said, just put all the fan favorites in, they don’t necessarily have to be in the story. But having them there for the fighting game part is important. Imagine if Capcom killed off whatever character you’ve been playing since the 90’s because it was part of the story, how would you feel? Or in Iori players cases, just changed the character to something completely different. Doesn’t make sense to me.
Tekken kinda fucked up in this way with Tekken 4 Jin. But he was unstoppable so no one really cared, but they then brought in Devil Jin who played just like T3 Jin.
They’ve done more right than wrong with the Tekken series, with the unaging Nina, eternal Paul/Heihachi, and palette swaps of Law and Eddy/Christie.
They’ve never taken away Divine Cannon or Phoenix Smasher, that’s for sure.
Soul Calibur, though? I could strangle them for how they completely change Ivy every single game. Seriously. she’ll have like 10% of her moves the same.
yeah, i would never question the story in a non-sensical crossover title like MvC3 bc that shit doesnt matter at all.
i was JUST about to say Jin changed as a character bc of “storyline” AND T4 had the least amount of characters of any Tekken to date correct? but they kept the “core” character styles. Kyo changed as character due to storyline as well, or do people not remember Kyo without a fireball and using the body blows? now hes a mixture of his two styles hes used throughout the series. even more recently Kensou became a WHOLE different character due to storyline. i just dont understand why people act like narrative shouldnt have ANY bearing on where a series of games goes with its characters. i mean im not trying to JUSTIFY them removing characters due to story (trust me I was PISSED without my Yashiro) but it happens. capcom did it in the SF3 series. snk does it in KoF and they did it in MotW…and now those two “stories” are slowly intertwining which is why youve seen Gato and Tizoc in KoF and little teasers like Kim’s sons in his intro/outro animations or Rock coming out and imitating Terry. or a better example check out MK. how many of its characters have died in the story? I was a Johnny Cage MAIN in MK and MK2 but in MK3…he was dead. so i just learned a new character. but hes back now. its like people can make excuses for one company but not for another. look how many characters are already in KoFXIII and now they are talking about adding more for the fans but only ask they be somewhat canon, thats nothing to be whining about. look how many characters you have to choose from from SO many titles THAT ARENT DEAD. stop being picky.
for all intents and purposes TTT is just that series’ equivalent of KoF’s “dream match” where story doesnt matter. hence why Jun is back now. im not trying to break any hearts or anything but i dont think Heihachi or Wang will make it to the next game. the original Armor King got killed by Marduk awhile back too, but the ORIGINAL King took up the mantle and is now Armor King. Remember that? The original King was a black man who was raised as an orphan and took in one a mexican kid from the orphanage and trained him. the King youve seen since Tekken 3 has been that kid, or did nobody notice the skin color change or the more luchador style moves hes used. which explains why in King’s T5 ending when he went to shake Armor King’s hand and he did that chain grab on him, he said he “knows that move from somewhere”. and then Armor King is in DR. STORYLINE.
Kris: Oswald isnt dead. Shen wanted revenge on him for setting him up to take the fall in a Hong Kong drug deal. Shen Woo is a drug dealer btw…in fact with the exception of Duo-Lon who is still an assassin by trade, the remaining two members of the new “hero” team of the Ash Saga are villains. Ash only asked Shen to join him because he needed his strength to get through the other fighters so he could meet his ends, which was to sneakily steal the power of the three sacred treasures. so far he has Chizuru’s mirror and Iori’s Flame, now he needs Kyo. btw if people hadnt noticed, it was due to this STORYLINE that Ash gained the moves he did across the games he’s been in and why Iori became a new style character that cant use his flame anymore. but getting back to the point. while Ash was using Shen, Shen was also using Ash because of his connections to Elisabeth who has a connection to Oswald, who was his target. once the two teams met, Ash gave Shen what he wanted which was a shot Oswald and then Ash abandoned his team to go achieve his goal which was to get what he wanted from Iori. Shen “defeated” Oswald but left him there alive.
I can answer these all day. who’s next.
Also, I do believe im going to get out to Jon’s tonight. Im bringing the MK again lol. AND I WILL PLAY TEKKEN!!!
Capcom did “kill off” a bunch of characters before, twice. SFA, and SF3. The thing is KOF has always had enough of a variety of characters that while you miss your main, there’s usually someone out there for you to fill your team with that you like. Also you can’t just slap an infinite amount of characters into a game, it’s hard work to balance of a fighter, and each character you put in makes it exponentially more difficult, especially if they’re fairly unique. That’s why it’s a miracle SSFIV was as balanced as it was.
SNK has made a bunch of mistakes- with the exception of netcode (we don’t know on that yet, my guess is no) KOFXIII looks like it will deliver the goods for at least some people.
That said, what we fail to understand sometimes is that for each one of us, there’s folks out there who aren’t competitive and fans of the series- who like the story stuff. Their money is important in terms of getting good games made.
