To be fair, GG was quite popular in America for a long time. “GG and 3S” was the old “SF4 and MVC3.”
GG and its community was also shit on for a very long time by the Capcom community.
GG was also never treated like a main event at EVO, even in the years where it was equal in popularity to a bunch of other games that were pushed because the West Coast was good at it or the players had better connection to the staff (Tekken 4, CvS2).
The “main event” at EVO was always Marvel, 3S, Tekken, and CvS2 (briefly)

Every top 8 was amazing to watch besides Tekken. Tekken was torture, it’s a shame it’s not as fun to watch as it is to play. AE was easily the most hype.

Watched from start to finish today. Awesome shit. Highlights to me were Spark’s ultimate defensive tactics on BB, Poongko’s perfect on Daigo, Latiff blowing up Tokido, Daigo, and Poongko in a row, Viscant Wesker/Haggar gameplay to get to Phoenix(especially after watching the other 2 Phoenix players get pretty much raped), and the MK top 8 was great to watch too. Lowlights to me were the T6 tourney(honestly is Bob just that broken or something?), Justin basically toying with Noel Brown(I swear it looked like he just didn’t want to blow him up since the friends), and just nitpicking here but the 2nd second set of MK GFs was pretty anti-climatic.
so Latiff viper is that sick…Poongko was real rush master then, who winning this year??
This is Evo. Players are going to play to win. Fei Long is probably the best safe character to use in any tournament.

So, I’ll go ahead and say it. MK had probably the most diverse match-ups in the Top 8, compared to the other FGs. Every single MK match had a different character, and it was so much fun to watch. SF, it was good too, but it was pulling off that Tekken feeling with Law and Bob’s in Top 8, just this time with Fei longs and Yuns. It’s your character, play as the characters you like, just understand it will probably translate differently to the spectators. Props to Poongko for R’kellyin Daigo, that was just plain awesome. Anyways, great EVO, makes we wanting to go to EVO 2012 badly so I don’t miss the action.
