What going on man! We need to get up and play again. Matches were to dope at the top of that hotel at EVO.
Roski Roski Roski what happen to you man? You became washed up lol. Yo aint been the same since that same EVO I was just talking about. I thank you though because without your money I wouldnt be in school right now . Oh and I just got my library card real talk. NC yall ready? Oh Matt im still down for the Guilty Gear, Third Strike deal lmao.
āMan fuck this random ass game. Iām just going to play KOF 13ā
Blake, 2 months from now.
lol for real thoughā¦ feels like I stepped into a time machine and went back to 2006-2007.
Thing is, when it ends doesnāt really matter. If the venue was a little more comfortable or there were some casual setups to play people on, I would have hung around. Itās kinda hard to āhave fun and learn somethingā in a hundred degree room with no casual setups. Stuff happens like you said and you never know, I doubt Robin knew it was going to have that big of a turn out. It;s been beaten to death at this point but thatās never what all the ranting was about, which was mainly just people defending their points of view in the first place, probably both of which had a bit of validity to it.
as TOās we need to figure out something to speed things up. most things can be made better.
The late players= the only answer i can see is a hard cutoff.
Last minute entries and drops= i dont think that slows it that much.
Not having sticks= huge problem especially when two people come sharing a pad/stick and they both do well in the tournament it slows it down to a crawl. ( i am open to suggestions)
people whining about setups= never going to be enough and people are not willing to bring stuff just want to complain
Showing of āKing of Chinatownā followed by games. I know this is different then the usual format, please donāt be surprised when you come in and we are all watching a movie.
Time: 7:00 pm Location: Cary, NC (PM/Text me if you need the address) # of setups: 2* Systems: 360, wii Games: AE, MvC3, MK9, Tekken 6, BBCS2, Brawl Project M (All of these games arenāt garunteed to be played, but I own all of them on 360/wii)
*Plenty of room for people to bring additional setups
I will be providing drinks, we will also most likely order pizza (Sadly I will not be providing pizza for everyone)
I wish I could make it, got to take my son to get a blood transfusion tomorrow (2 day process). But iāll be sure to to check yall out next time and Iāll bring a ps3 setup with some games.
Anyone know about the āFight Clubā that meets at EZ at Market Fair?
Yeah Sanwa is gonna start ,making them too. The story is on the front page(SRK). Thanks again for all the video footage you took.Great job, I know it wasnāt easy with no room and all those people, lol My buddy from NE watched the vids and heās thinking of flying out here just to play 3S!!! So thank you. You and me gotta get in some Arcana Heart 3 and some Melty Blood some time.(^o^)/
I obviously missed out on Robinās tournament, but I have had nothing but awesome experiences at tournaments he ran previously. Protip: If youāre traveling out of state, donāt expect to be home at anything even close to resembling a reasonable hour. Prepare to make a decision of sleeping on someoneās floor, or nodding in and out of sleep on the highway in a desperate attempt to make it home.
Please keep running tournaments at Strange Matter, it is a dope fucking venue.
Hahahaā¦I -never- expect tournaments to end before midnight. I think Iāve been to maybe two that have, lol. I consider tournament entries a contribution to the scene, myself. Iāve added to pots of games I didnāt play. Just a mentality thing I guess.
People talking about Melty Blood still? Money match?
Having organized a few things myself, only in extreme cases can I look down on TOs. Like Goldsboro or Jinmaster. Or that time Jinmaster ran Goldsboro. Wow man.
On vacation in Toronto until next Sunday, then pretty have to immediately turn around and move into my new place with Knuckledust! 3s condo gogogogogo!!!
Iāll admit, I was mad yesterday. Today, I feel a bit differently. Iāll go ahead and list off my concerns, most of which are already addressed;
-venue wasnāt appropriate for the size and scope of the event
-running 1 pool at 2, and the other one at 10 is ridiculous
-watching the TO get bodied in Marvel, then proceed to play casuals with the guy who bodied him for a half hour, when he was previously yelling āNo casualsā at people. This was also during the time period when people were waiting for AE pool 2 to start, eating up a setup.
-Multi-system tournaments. Donāt do that shit. I understand resources are limited, but seriously, that shit is dumb. Pick one and stay with it.
-The various setups that werenāt actually running AE, but Super instead. There were quite a few tournament matches that were played on Super. In an AE tournament.
-I didnāt know where the goddamn 7/11 was the whole goddamn time. I could have had a goddamn slurpee while I was waiting. Goddamn.
Iāll go back though, because I know Robin knows his shit, having been to his tournaments since fucking Gametime (youāre fucking old if you remember this btw). If he keeps running them, theyāll be better off because of this. Tournament organizing is serious business, and if you havenāt had the pleasure of organizing or running a major (or, in this case, a tournament that magically became a major), then you need to take a step back and think about how that shit can be.
Iāve personally never had a problem with a tournament Robin has been either associated with or flat out ran and this is dating back ten years or so. He was even nice enough to let me and my group to crash at his place instead of toughing out a long car trip home in the middle of the night. The whole money back thing is whatever. Donāt get me wrong if it happened to me Iād like my money back as well and I was grateful to the Fayetteville team for allowing me to get my AE entry fee back when my crew tired out and wanted to back home, but if that was Robinās policy all you can really ask of him is that he kept it consistent. Now judging from the stream I watched as well as everyoneās accounts it was more or less a case of the tournament just getting to big to handle. Now if anyone wants to not go to any tourney for whatever reason thats their business and theirs alone. Iāll just point this out, if everyone was thin skinned around here then Roskiās tourney and these Charlotte tournies would be the only ones people would be going to in this state with the power outage incident at Luckyās and late starting times from the last EZ tourney. Directing a tournament is a very hard thing to do especially if it gets too big too fast. Hopefully people just can learn from the mistakes theyāve made or witnessed depending on your role in the tournament and make it better each and every time they throw a tourney. Thats just my 2 cents.
As for fixing the said problems. Start the tourney on time, if you canāt get there on time expect to start in the loserās bracket or not at all. If a tourney is supposed to start 1 pm then by all means start it at 1 pm. I donāt care if Justin Wong hasnāt shown up yet or John Doe hasnāt shown up yet. You are the TO, providing the fact that you didnāt half ass your event page and either didnāt put up a start time or didnāt bother to post up the event until a few days before the event, its on the players and no one else to make it to the event on time. Now as a TO you can easily float matches as long as possible to delay someone dropping straight into the loserās brackets but just be consistent about it IE donāt drop someone you donāt know an hour earlier or so before you drop your boy. No preferentail treatment.
Last minute drops/entries Iām fine with.
No stick/pad or people sharing one. Thats their problem. I had to borrow sticks at the last tourney I was able to attend because none of the people I came with had Xbox sticks. I asked ahead if I could borrow sticks and it was never a problem. One thing I must caution though is there are too many reports of theft at tournies in general whether its someoneās stick/setup/disc or what have you. I think a good idea would be to have 2 or 3 people the TO can trust to watch the hardware as a measure of security. Personally Iām a very trusting individual and have lent out my stuff at prior tournies if need be and not been burnt and Iāve also made a point to find whoever I borrowed something from ASAP after Iāve finished a match. Iād like to say everyone is like that but I doubt that. I know security would be a hassle to do, but if possible it probably would provide a measure or relief to someone that does have their hardware in circulation.
Setups is just an impossible thing to fix completely. Someone will always complain about either a lack of setups or the quality of said setups. It just goes with the territory. All you can do as a TO is provide as many setups as you can as well as providing the best quality setups you can. Now what you can control is your use of the setups. Iāve never really seen a tourney end at a reasonable time personally if they stagger the start times of games so that they try and finish one āmajorā before the even start another āmajorā. What I would do personally with just a 5 game schedule for example(MvC3, AE, MK, T6, BB:CS) and 7 TVs would be this. 2 MvC3, 2 AE, 1 MK, 1 T6, and 1 BB to start with. This would allow everyone to at least get started playing their games and keep people from waiting hours on end to see their tournaments start. As the ālesserā tournies end or thin out you can always add more TVS as needed to the tournies/games that either move slowly or just have bigger turnouts. Like I said before at least this way people see movement with their game or games tournament and probably wonāt feel like they are standing around for nothing.
And thats all I got to say about that.
PS Still plan on running my usual session days this week(Wednesday and Friday)
When I was there Friday i was dead tired. They guy at the front desk told me about the group on my way out as we weāre discussing the controllers. All i really got was that yall bring your own equipment and pay a discounted price. Can you tell me about the club?
lol took me a bit to find it as well, the thing was like a block away from the big ā7/11ā sign
āthe clubā is just ā¦ people from SRK that go to the EZ session. You just tell them your there to play the fighting games, and only play on the equipment brought in by our community.
Sorry for the double post here but this is one of my pet peeves about tournies in general. Now before I begin this is not directed at Josiah because it sounded like he did everything he could to be there for his match. But I canāt stand it when players just go missing and no one knows where they are and a whole tournament gets held up because no one can find this person. As a smoker unfortunately I do tend to leave the venue, but every time I do leave to smoke or whatnot I always try to ask the TO when my next match is and what kind of time frame Iām looking at. And if I do have time to leave I always tell someone where Iām going to be that way no one is wondering where I am and someone can find me easily or they at least know Iāll be back in a matter of minutes if in a worst case scenario my name gets called while Iām out. At least this way I feel like I save the TO and his/her associates from calling my name 8 times or more with no clue where I am. Just something I wanted to get off my chest.
