North Carolina Players LXII

I’m not one to split hairs about which S+ is better than the other S+ tier.

derp I hate SF4 too can I be cool NC?

Like I said about the high level players, it’s not hard to like a game when you’re winning large sums of money at it.

I’m not hating on you because you’re young btw, you probably have more experience vs higher level comp than most players in NC, and I think you have a pretty well educated opinion about SF4. But can you really say it has the same depth and excitement of most other fighting games? Compare SF4 to something like GG and it just seems… I dunno. Lacking.

Course, you’re right, people will like what they like and I’m not arguing that at all. I just be hatin’.

MadTeaParty: You should pick up some non-animu games if you want a challenge in NC man. Maybe I’ll put some more time into BB though. And don’t discount us on GG… I’m pretty sure Matt and Blake would give you a good run for your money in that game. I would say we should try to revive GG but I know I’d drop that like a Litchi combo once UMVC3 comes out lol

Fei is retarded. He’s a lot more stupid than the twins. In retrospect, I can’t believe he was underused in Vanilla. He was/is a great anti fireball character. All of his buttons are good and he has autofootsies.

I love how once I stop going to tournaments there’s talk of GG. Very frustrating.

Welcome to my world. BB and GG all of sudden wanna show face when I peace out.

There will probably be a gem for this in Street Fighter x Tekken…

Sorry, I just found what you said to be really funny. “I figured out how to beat Wolverine’s BS!” “How?” “I picked Zero!”

I mean, seriously? Hilarious.

Regarding UMvC3, Phoenix’s huge nerf is going to do a lot to the metagame by making zoning teams more viable, combined with the game’s overall slant more towards zoning.

Overall though, I think if Ultimate wasn’t coming out and all we had was Vanilla for another good few years, then people would eventually figure out how to deal with a lot of stuff. There’s too much that hasn’t really been explored in the game. It’s just that as the state of the game is now, it’s retarded. Period. People haven’t really “figured out” how to beat the garbage that’s in the game, they just learned to pick better garbage. Wolverine isn’t on the radar as much because people found out that characters like Dante and Zero rape him (as well as most of the rest of the cast, for that matter), or you can just pick Haggar to make his main game (Berserker Slash) irrelevant.

As far as Phoenix goes, even with the anti-Phoenix strats that people have come up with, she’s still a huge threat due to how much she influences the flow of a match. Her mere presence completely changes a match dynamic. The only downside is that she wrecks traditional team chemistry, but people have figured out some ideal Phoenix teams. Flocker’s team is especially potent if you look at it. You have Zero on point, a character who really only loses to hardcore zoning, but with Phoenix in the back, nobody wants to zone him. Then you throw in Tron, who basically makes him untouchable in close, and the other player literally has almost no options for taking on that team in a reasonably safe way. You have to go way out of your way to deal with that trash. Dante/Haggar(Tron)/Phoenix is similar.

But yeah, overall, I’m not expecting Ultimate to be some magical fix to everything. Heck, even with the nonsense in Vanilla, I still play that game. I just don’t think that everyone having their own BS makes the game balanced. It’s just a matter of what’s the most dominant BS. The fact that it’s a team game actually hurts the character variety more than it helps, just because you have the conundrum that you have with every team game, where a character that performs a similar function to another character ends up getting picked more because they do it better. MvC3 just wasn’t allowed to get to the point where people really started to figure out what’s optimal. You have a lot of players claiming certain things are optimal because that’s what is winning this week, but then someone figures out a simple counter and things get shuffled around again. That’s part of why people who really like the game think there’s more variety and viable teams, because the game hasn’t been out long enough to figure out all the counters.

Top 8? Marvel 3 is more of a top 4 or top 5. Plus you have to evaluate by teams, not number of characters. Not every Phoenix team may operate the same, but it’s still a Phoenix team and it works the way it does because of Phoenix. I would argue that there’s actually less variety at high level just because people know what’s dominant right now and they’re leaning towards that.

No, if you’d pay attention and quit whining about Zero, I didn’t say I counter picked the character, I could probably beat Wolverine with almost any character. It’s about knowing the distances on berserker slash and keeping at a distance where he can’t cross up easily. Characters with strong jumping attacks can beat it pretty easy by jumping back when he does it from a certain distance. Punishing whiffed dive kicks is also really important and staying out of the corner. None of that is specific to zero. I don’t have much of a problem vs wolvie with Dorm either. Don’t have much wolv vs dante experience either but I’m sure he can handle that match pretty well too.

What I was getting at is people jumped to whining and what not about wolverine instead of actually learning the fight, when it really wasn’t all that bad to begin with, just jarring at first.

I’d agree that it’s hard to tell all the competitive characters because of the “pick a top tier” mentality of most tournament players these days, but I can’t blame them, just boils down to ease of use vs effectiveness. Wesker/Wolverine are both incredibly easy characters that are pretty damn effective, so even if they aren’t broke, people just jump on the easy to win with shit. I think Wesker is probably the most brain dead easy character out of anyone in Marvel, probably moreso than Wolverine.

Been saying that since I saw that move lol. It’s invincible when he’s on point too.

Try fei vs vanilla sagat, you’ll see why lol. Shit was like… Fei needed 10 openings to kill Sagat… sagat needed… 2?

Tiger knee also did like half life and summoned assist goblins and broke soul gauge for a critical finish and shit.

GG is and will always be the best FG series ever IMO. Win or Loose I will always support this game. Before I moved back to the US, GGXXAC was my main game. I’m a looong time GG player/fan. I started in 1998 with GG on the PS1 that I bought in Ikebukuro. I look forward to a new release and continue to play the older titles to this day.

But yeah not really hating on marvel because its still in its vanilla stage, which is the stage where theres always at least 1 character that is just flat out broken and the majority just hops on the broken characters. For example.
SF4:Sagat
BBCT:Carl,Arakune
KOFXIII:Raiden
MVC3:Phoenix,Wolverine.

Peace in the NC thread is non existent. Don’t stop the hate, maybe it will be enough to bring Supreme DNA back.

OK.

You mean like…Zero?

Yeah, but he does that stuff pretty easily.

OK.

Duh, Hammer.

Like, seriously, none of this outright counters what I was saying. Dante can beat Wolvie, but Dante is also friggin’ stupid. Same for Zero.

As far as keeping your distance, this may beat grade school Wolverine, but a smarter player is just going to use your tendency to move backwards against you and put you in the corner. Which you already said was bad.

One, everyone does this to an extent. Two, nothing you said makes Wolverine any less stupid. Yes, there are counters. Most of the reliable counters involve simply picking a more retarded character, which is the point that I was getting at. And there are only so many characters who are more retarded than Wolverine.

Berserker Slash definitely has counters though, which is why picking Wolverine also involves picking the proper assist. Saw that happening at Erik’s against his team with Shuma assist, where the assist doesn’t provide enough coverage for Wolverine and basically let me throw him out of poorly spaced Slashes.

NC Players LXIII Stare into the face of HATE!

Also guys I’m pretty sure the point of Marvel is building up your team so it is the tallest tower of bullshit you can come up with and then compare it to your opponents massive pile of steaming bullshit and sees who has the most shit.

Moving backwards doesn’t matter that much in marvel, if wolverine doesn’t come at me I don’t have to move back and if I do move back as he comes in and I score a hit, he’s dead. This isn’t dhalsim vs zangeif. One hit is the end of wolverine. The only time the corner becomes a big issue is on entry, and honestly if they added something else to entry IE pick your side or height or delay the entry, it’d remove a lot of the retarded stuff in the game, since that’s where most of it occurs. But I guess it doesn’t matter too much since Wolverine fell down the nerf tree and broke every move he had worth using on the way down in UMVC3.

If you watch Phoenix steam roll people, it’s usually with traps and teleports as they come in. Same goes with Wesker and Wolverine and Dante and Zero and etc etc. Most of Marvel is a lot of respecting the other guy until you can get in and shit on them. People that get steam rolled by bullshit usually aren’t doing their job at keep control of their personal bubble.

Which is why the best characters are the ones that control space with the least effort (Dante, Zero, Phoenix, Magneto) or outright barrel through space control (Wolverine, Wesker, also Magneto).

I also like how you encapsulated the game into “control as much space as possible until you get one hit and then get your stupid on”. Which is what I’ve been saying about the game for months. Marvel 3 is so awesome!

derp I hate all fighting games I am NC.

Which is to say, I asked twice this weekend about games going on, and instead got ignored so that NC could argue. Siiiiiiiccccccckkk.

The funny thing is that I still enjoy playing Marvel 3. I just accept that it’s a silly game and it’s basically designed to make you roll your eyes.

NC will be NC
