North Carolina Players LXII

Yeah Dorm by himself isn’t in the same ballpark. He’s so much better with assists, which is why I never got why everyone wants to run him as an anchor. He’s really best in second IMO because you still got the meter building from the first character and you still get an assist to support your offense. He’s actually pretty good at rush down, he just needs something to cover him while he gets momentum for the trijump mixups.

Dante can definitely compensate for Flame Carpet. I’ve hit a Dorm who had a carpet out that I was aware of and just launched early before Dante’s normals carried him into the Carpet’s range. It just requires a little more awareness.

Dante can also zone pretty well. Most of his zoning tools are faster than Dorm’s. Air Play is especially good. Dormammu can definitely hold his own, but it requires a little more forethought or specific assists.

Who all would be up for an all-day MK9 Session with a live stream and food? If enough people are interested I would find a place that’s more in the middle of everyone to help decrease the length of the drive since everyone pretty much has to drive 2+ or so just to hit up the weekly ranbats. If that goes well and we got AE and Mvc3 people coming out as well to try out the game and have fun then I wouldn’t mind trying to do the same for AE and MvC3 as well. It wouldn’t be a weekly thing, just once every 3-4 months or something to help encourage new members to come out and build the community. There would only be a Venu fee of $6 which lets you eat the whole day.

Never wanted to learn to play the Viola until today…

Viola looks really fun. I’m wondering exactly what the properties are of the orb when it’s just sitting there. At first I thought it would damage the opponent if they run into it, but at one point it looked like Xianghua was sitting on it and nothing happened.

I think they said you can call it back to you and it’ll hit on the way back, so I guess it’s kinda like bridgett from GG? Looks like she has some interesting stuff with it though, I wonder what sort of freedom she has with calling it? (ie: in the middle of her attacks / blocking etc etc)

Viola seems to be a mix of fencing style (Charlotte?) and Amakusa- my two favorite SamSho chars. She’s definitely someone I’m interested in.

Because tv as a format is ass, no other medium is so strictly controlled and shaped by advertising, even if you watch it online, the structure of the show is still based around the need to break up scenes up into tiny bland chunks to allow for advertising breaks-- retreading ground with the same characters over and over to compensate for viewers that are just tuning in, purposefully keeping story-lines stagnant in case people missed an episode here and there. It has zero integrity for real, tv is 99% bogus out of the gate.

Japanese tv is more of the same, it’s amazing how uncritical it is, you’re different having lived there- but there is a reason that usually the only people who like Japanese tv are the people who probably want to be Japanese/ live out some anime dream there–I think when Satoshi Kon died, Japanese pop culture lost one of the last people that was actually making really decent/thoughtful stuff. Millennium Actress, Paprika, even Paranoia Agent, these were fantastic, what a loss, they really made a statement you know-- while still being entertaining (its not a choice you have to make, you can be smart and interesting, thoughtful and fun, take bebop, berserk, or even baccano as examples), exploring ideas about information control, Japan’s consumerist relationship with sex, etc. He really challenged a lot of Japanese conventions, something which their modern pop culture has zero interest in doing-- they’re too busy making more of the same bland stuff like everybody else these days.

these are in no real order basically the best/most substantial things I’ve seen Japan produce in ‘recent’ times.

I mean just listen to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?fmt=18&gl=GB&hl=en-GB&v=Evj5TNrmI-E, thats what real effort sounds like

I’ll PM you mane.

Did I REALLY miss a gathering in fucking winston salem yesterday?

Fuck my life.

I would add Death Note and NHK ni Youkoso to that list. I think those two have also differentiated themselves from other recent (or any time period) anime as well.

EZ was pretty much dead again this week.(-_-"). Starting to see a serious decline in attendance to EZ and gatherings in Fayetteville. Hope everybody is just waiting till next month when all the new games start comin out. I mean it was really bad. Me/Will/Salty Dustin/Tracey/Sleepy Nathan/and new guy from arcade ufo who was really good at 3rd Strike.(Sorry forgot your name homie,I was tired too, lol) that was it. Shit, even non FG related people weren’t even there, ie Mr. Botts, and Eddy. Yeah it was lookin kinda bleak.8:44 am I’m at home playin P3 and drinkin Budweiser, fuck it…

Whenever I introduce people to anime I always show them Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo and Paranoia Agent. I also show them ones like Barefoot Gen and Grave of the Fireflies.

The shows, or the dramas I’ve seen are hit and miss, from what you said and what I’ve gathered most are positioned for marketing and showing off the latest shiny idol they can attach to the project. Sometimes the writing is just unbelievable, like in the one called “Japanese Americans” you have a lady jumping off a boat that was taking her back to Japan because just wanted to stay with her true love in America <<".

Well, you’ll have 3 extra there this coming week so that will be good.

Yeah I haven’t been helping out fayettevilles scene much recently, just been so direly busy/poor. I’ll be able to drive ‘distances’ this coming week though, gettin’ that car fixed up.

edit: Addressing the earlier convo, yeah for real-- most of the things on my list were actually movies. I think this partly has to do with how hard it is to get funding for stuff in Japan, the only people who really get a chance to make these kind of deeply involved/ slower paced movies are directors who already have strong reputations, uncertain. Love Exposure is a very long film, but its amazing, repping this again.

Yeah we’ve been missing a lot of EZ regulars like Kevin and his crew (Richard, Sean, Lawrence, Danny), Raf, Mikaul, Rob, Keith, Trevor, Rob Stewart, etc. Not to mention other regulars moved away like Tom, DP, Demarcus, David Garza and David Goins. Yesterday consisted of me, Sal, Dustin, Tracey, Nathan and two guys who names I can’t recall.

Stream up at RRQ thanks to Nicholle

AE tournament starting on stream

So is anybody disappointed that mashing supers for more damage is back in UMVC3.

I know for a fact that there are gonna be times when, quite frankly, I won’t feel like it.

I mash super in every game, even if it doesn’t do more damage.
