They actually aren’t, because realistically most players will not be able to get all FM content for free. No word on targets yet is definitely not a good sign. Capcom really wants to make sure that grinding for content will be tougher and tougher in the long run. It’s not like they are only getting money off of premium stuff, far from it. Not to mention it’s 100% sure that SFV will be put in bundles like KI every season, therefore generating more money.
What really bothers me is the ridiculous grind for colors and how devalued the season pass is. SP owners don’t even get discounts or exclusive bundles of premium costumes. It just screams greediness and little regard to the costumers.
Capcom changed the business model expecting more profit, no company do otherwise. They are also doing this because it’s a extremely low risk move, since the project was allegedly funded by Sony.
They only sold SOME updates. There were balance patches outside of that. Last I checked, AE2012 was free, SFxT 2013 was free, Ultra had a ton of free balance shifts.
Ultimately the pricing doesn’t match the pricing of their competitors. As I pointed out, Killer Instinct charges $2.99 per costume and offers bundles. They also don’t charge for updates. MKX had a ton of content and updates for free before MKXL all of the stuff was sold as individual DLC packs you could choose to buy or not buy and still play the game. The price for DLC costumes was $3.99 for 3 costumes. You couldn’t get the characters for free, and again I’m fine with paying a bit more, but a 500% increase is ridiculous.
What I do not like is that Capcom is slowly locking me out of the game as they release new characters. Eventually it’s going to get to the point, likely by the next character, that I won’t be able to purchase characters without real money. This is definitely not my idea of a good competitive game. There’s a reason I didn’t touch MK and KI. The DLC model ruins fighting games.
Capcom is driving people away from SF5 and this is another example of it. Way too many people are pissed about the mishandling of this game.
Unfortunately Capcom’s greed has got the best of them and they could lose it all. If Capcom does not wake up they could gamble away the life of Street Fighter and lose those that truly love it.
They should just make colors unlockable by just playing similar to sf4. I think they should just unlock them in general right now. Pc players can just unlock them without playing anyway. If they did additional packs then they should make colors like 1-2 dollars for each extra pack.
So by just continuing to sell costumes for the same price but without getting money from updates, you can see how there is a defizit? If the costumes prices from 4 where enough to finance everything, then why did we pay for the updates too…?
All I said is that the higher price was to be expected.
And about the bundles, we dont even know yet if there are never going to be bundles, they’re just now releasing summer costumes slowly (to get people who want them ASAP to buy them now) but it’s very well plausible that those will eventually end up in a bundle for a little less money, probably when the next premium costume wave starts.
Capcom is just trying to squeeze out as much profit as possible and having that whole near-bancrupcy in mind, I cant even fault them for that, I’d do the same thing. And I think we should get away from the idea of owning every costume, in a f2p environment, owning every costume is something I’ve never seen… just imagine a LoL player having every single costume in the game… must have spend a couple hundred bucks
tl;dr version:
higher prices were expected
bundles are almost guaranteed
owning “everything” just for the heck of it probably wont happen in SFV
They’re very pricey yes, but the alternative would be to buy a new version of the game every 1-2 years, so… yeah, I’ll go with having to pay more money for cosmetic content that doesn’t affect the gameplay.
But I’ll hardly buy anything else than the costumes for my main or other outfits that I really like.
Still doesn’t excuse the fact they are pricey, so I won’t buy any. Anyway, as a season pass owner, I think I should at least receive exclusive bundles/discount and whatnot. If one pays for SP, that’s basically paying for a new disc like in the previous model, hence one should be offered premium DLC by the price it used to have. I fail to see how that’s unreasonable to expect.
Yeah, I know they didn’t promise that and bought the season pass anyway. Just saying that there is no reason not to do it besides greediness.
I mean we all know it is insanely pricey and we all agree on that. It isn’t like talking about it is gonna make them fix it over the other issues in the game.
Yet, Chun’s dress and being as obnoxious as i possibly can be with that Mika outfit is worth it.
I pointed out that you’d still probably spend more just buying the stuff for your own characters in SF5 than you would have buying the same amount of stuff in SF4. Kind of glossing over that. Even buying just 2 costumes per year for each character you play puts you very high up there. You play 3 characters and buy 2 costumes per year you’re hitting the same costs as you were paying for SF4 with all of the new versions + all costumes for the characters you like. If you only bought the costumes you liked in SF4 you’d still come out ahead because they released less costumes total than they are likely going to do for SF5. They’ve already done 1 premium for everyone and 2 more for some characters with more on the way for this year.
The whole “buy everything for everyone” argument falls flat in the face of the math of doing the same thing in SF4 + buying every version from the start, something not every player had to do.
Okay DevilJin…I gotta take you to task on that one:
As someone already pointed out, the highest the DOA costumes has EVER gone is $3(which are mainly for collaborations), which is one dollar less than the premium costumes that SF4 has tossed out and DOUBLE the price for the CPT Chun and Cammy costumes. Otherwise they are usually $2 which is double what the premium costumes are in SFV.
As another person pointed out, the season pass is the only expensive thing DOA has ever done…which is mainly full of cosmetic costumes that, as stated before, is up to you if you want to buy. You can get the stages and characters separate if you choose to.
SFV doesn’t even have BUNDLES yet past the CPT one…which is completely outrageous for the little that’s in it. DOA5 atleast has the common courtesy to always have bundles for their packs and have them be reasonable on top of that(The Attack on Titan set is $40…but that includes costumes for every character past guests which is about 30+ and a $5 stage, the first they made a stage cost money…and that still beats SFV’s $10 stage)
And finally, DOA5LRCF EXISTS. It’s far less costly to buy every outfit for one or two characters than it will be soon for the same if you buy one for a single SF female at this rate…ESPECIALLY if you main Chun-Li.
Ironically, I CALLED THIS EXACT SCENARIO. It was pretty obvious SFV was going to go the DOA5 route…but even I didn’t believe they was completely going to follow the “give most of the costumes to the females” route too lol.
