Whats up Jeff…long time no see bro. My brother and I have definetly improved since the last time we played against you, Watson, and Gerald at AE…Hopefully you get those DVD’s made bro. Shit…throw Watson in the mix of the matches on the DVD to have the best of Cal SF2 experience.

Waits for the dvd’s Seriously, I honestly cannot wait to see this dvd, many of the great old schoolers in for a show, shit sounds too good, sorry for being a dick, but hurry up and get it done, I want to see this go down. Also, anyone got any vids of Tomo playing during his prime and if so, are you willing to post it on this forum, I want to see the beast unleashed during the time of the golden era.

Hrmm…
I would say i’m 2nd generation of SF players…tourney play after ST(i was 14 back then)…I played sf since CE but never knew about tourney play til maybe A1…i used to play at a few arcades in Orange County…Beach and Warner Arcade and Mission Control…I met Thao Duong back in the mission control days in lil saigon westminster with all the cheesy vietnamese guiles and ryus…they used to call me the mexiKEN LOL…with the thick viet accents…it was thao that introduced me to watson and martin when A1 was out…back then i got mopped up by those guys with shit i’ve never seen( cheap ass GUY)…i dunno about yall…but thats motivation to play…shaeffer was in the mix too at the time…i met him mostly going to the infamous SHGL…the guy was comedy but knew how to run his mouth…i went to my first big tourney in vegas where i got 4th on A1 where i would then meet my future rival John Choi(he eliminated me and beat mike to get first…)after that tourney…thanks to all the OGs…watson, martin, shaeffer, thao…hours of comp with those guys…always learning something new…A2 was around the corner…the torched was passed…i dominated the SF/Tekken scene til about 2001…so 96-2001…good run…i’ve read mike’s and jeff’s posts and what they say is true…times have changed…i could not beat them on old SF games…and even if i could beat them today…shit everybody gets old/non motivated…i got many stories…but i hope this one will get you guys started…

Watching valle vs. watts is like watching hokages go at it.(Naruto reference for those who watch).

goddamn i live two streets from beach and warner. how sad things are compared to then… its impossible to find a good arcade these days.

Good shit Cali. More stories please!(everybody)

lol couldn’t have said it any better.

come az tourney call me the hokage killer

Man, you need to speak on that Alpha 3 championship we’ve been talking about. It was you in the thick of it after all. What’d you think about all that? Facing Daigo for the first time - had you even seen a video or played him even once before that finals match? What was the feeling of the US players after that tourny?

And how do you rate SFA3 in the heirarchy of SF.

A3 championships…
Like B3 all over again but with a new twist…an actual Japanese champion/a3 cabby+1G for the win…I knew i was gonna win the US tourney from the get go…not to sound arrogant but i was still innovating at the time…example:i KNEW i had to hold something back to win just in case someone was on fire…i was holding out V ryu til the very end…daigo had front seats watching after the 40 something mins of play between me and graham wolfe…(who btw still deserves props for even getting that far with little practice) V-isms at the time where mainly used to trap people or resets…i had only a few combos that worked such as infamous (alex combo-Japs coined this term not me)…where i would activate into cr.whatever, whatever, sweep into jab fb…then cross up fwd/or hk to get to the other side rinse wash repeat…rolento was my novelty char that i knew that could not be beaten at the time…due to my footsie experience + gaurd breaks…LOL…i know this sounds funny by explaining ghetto OLD shit but shit it worked…anyways…graham adapted to all great rolentos in the tourney and taking mine out…next came in my real char…if you watched the finals between me and wolfe you can see the change in pace with an aggressive V ryu…in simpler terms…he had no way of just countering everything with normals while i had a VC ready…i know i’m jumping around explaining things but i’m thinking aloud LOL…anyways…wolfe lost and my match with daigo came up…keep in mind Daigo was watching everything(i was holding that shit out for him)…if you’ve seen the finals bewteen daigo and i…i out footsied him the entire time playing ultra aggressive(aka zone pushing him with a VC ready)…but this style has a weakness which he started to see…like the beast he is…he started to see openings and repetiveness…so basically it was open season for his full screen VC’s during resets or teleporting…now…to figure out that much defense during an international match…i dont care who you are…thats what we call “CLUTCH”…he exploited my openings and started to freestyle with random teleport in corner/roll dp or hk…Daigo won respectively…and heres a lil controversy…there was one more match we were supposed to play…and it was jap style…before daigo and i played in the finals the officals and translators agreed on 2 style match ups for the championships…first style american( 2/3 )…and Jap (1 game)…now if you look closely to my reaction after daigo’s victory…they said that the tourney was over…LOL oh well right? Capcom PR’s just rushed the shit out of the final ceremony and that was it…NICE i got my cabby and my G so whatever…there was much uproar in Japan after our match up…basically i almost took out Japans finest on our first shot…Nuki himself said he would lose if he faced me instead of Daigo…so out of respect Daigo switched from V-akuma to V-Ryu for the rest of his A3 career…A3 was still being played after this international tourney…ecc mwc etc…and about that time…eddie lee came around…choi me watts placed top 3 in almost everything in our respective games…but thats another story :lovin:

IIRC, you did however win the first match against Diago right. So had they done the japanese style toury first, you would have won that (assuming the style of a 1 game tournament wouldn’t mess up your mind setting). And then did the american style which you may have won or lost.

My Memories

  1. I remember heading home from high school and stopping at Western Arcade which is across Mt Sac College. Saw a bunch of people playing this new game called Street Fighter 2 WW. I think there 3-5 machines. So I step up and choose Zangief (big wrestling fan back then). I didn’t know what the hell I was doing…6 buttons WTF!!! So this guy who I believe was playing Ryu started showing me some of the basics like blocking and the spin punch move. Only after I was done I found out that I was getting advice from a fellow newcomer named Tomo. Back then he was just a player. I found out his name from my friend who went with me. He was a friend of Tomo’s back when he went to Nogales High School.

  2. Going to my first Worlds Finest Comics Tourney off of Rosemead Blvd. Getting my ass handed, but by the 3rd tourney I was actually ranked 9th best in socal and I used Chunster

  3. Playing at Tilt at the Puente Hills Mall with there cockeyed joystick and button old STREETFIGHTER1 cabinet setup

aww those were the days

Now I just play for fun

winning the first match was part of american style 2/3…he came back and won the next 2 matches…there was supposed to be one more match…trust me bro lol…never made a big deal about it so whatever…

Crazy stuff, didn’t know that was the reason why Daigo switched to using V-Ryu, wouldn’t have imagined it.

I was there. I remember flying out there from Houston just to see it happen. Alex himself along with Tragic came to pick me up from the airport and we got back just in time for him to play in the semi finals. What a guy!

I know, just sayin that if they did the japanese style match first what coulda happened is all. Though it didn’t happen that way so talking about it doesn’t do much good I suppose.

hey people: does anyone here has the second half of the B3 A2 tornament video? (the mpeg version that was flying in the net a few years ago)

I have kinda a lot of good old/new stuff to share (around 25 GB of tournament stuff from worldwide) but that second half of the B3 tournament from A2 is hard as hell to find, I think the file name is: “Battle By the Bay (B3) pt 02.mpg”
