Man, I didn’t forget about you guys. It’s been forever!
What have you been up to?
It was sunday night and we were only there for about an hour. By the time people would have showed up, we would have split.

but there are some new blood that wants a taste of old school.

thanks
amen to that, especially 0 shit talking part. I wish more people have that mindset. You’ve proven yourselves in the past, and that’s great you aren’t ego driven or feel the need to prove anything.
It’d be cool if you guys announce the next time you’re going. I personally think you should make an announcement in this thread, and not make a big deal out of it by posting it in another forum. People that care, respect, and want a taste of old school will pay attention.
I live in California and have never been to FFA, but I would make the trip out there if I knew Tomo would be there. I’d like to play Hyper Fighting with you guys, is there an HF machine at ffa? or just ST/AE? Either way if you choose not to go again, I can respect that too.
top USA SF2 players vs. top japan SF2 players is one of my dream matches.
Japanese players are always 1 level above USA players when it comes to fighting games or usually the fighting games they take seriously. Thats why I would love to see some old school actions between the great USA players and Japan players. Will it ever happen? yea right. Maybe when the 1st place prize is $50,000.
I understand your side of things. I just hope I never grow out of stuff like this. I’m sure the older I get, the less time I’ll have, but I hope I always have it in me to want to play just for fun. (To be honest I like the shit talking, only if it’s not serious.)

Tomo should understand that should he announce a trip to FFA, he should be prepared to sign autographs.
Yeah I know.

Jeff check you PM’s…
Jeff do you ever remember playing Jason Nelson, a top player from Nor cal?
I respect how you guys feel about not attending tournaments anymore and how 1993 was 1993 and 2007 is now 2007, however, even if you guys don’t attend tournaments, would you guys ever think about attending big tournaments, maybe Evo or anything. I mean, just the presence of having the Top Players from the Golden Era around would be great, and I seriously believe that you guys with your play hard yet have fun persona’s can help out in a community where “ego’s” run wild.
Btw, Jeff or anyone, got any really specific stories to tell, like matchup’s during a tournament, what happened, how did you guys win or lose, etc, stuff like that, it would be great to hear even.
thanks
I’ll post some stuff from SF2 beginnings soon, I’ve just been a little busy. It’s good to see the fanbase for SF2 have grown and been loyal like this… :wgrin:
Jeff check your message box here dude…
Well in order to start at the beginning, we have to go back before the beginning, before the first World?s Finest Tournaments.
I owned World?s finest comics and always had video games inside my store. When SF2 came out it was really a game like no other. It was one of the first, and up to that time easily the best tactic based 1v1 fighting game. I started out with 1 in my store, and within a couple of months had 3-4. It was a phenomenon. For the first time peeps had the chance to test their skills mano a mano with their fellow gamers in a very sound well put together fighting game. People were hooked, and quarters didn?t stop flowing. Everyone loved the game, as did I. There came a time when I wanted to find out who the best players were. Up to this time during the first 1-2 months the game was out, I didn?t know of any tournaments, and wanted to find out where the best players went, and where they competed. The name that finally came up was Pac-Man arcade in Pasadena where a small Saturday morning tourney attracted the best of the best. One Friday night I decided to go there and meet a few of the guys, and find out where the SF 2 scene was at, and where it might head. I went, and what I saw astounded me. 10+ SF 2 games, and tons of players. I watched and was surprised to see what seemed a very high level of skill. At this point in my SF career it was impossible to tell who was the best, because frankly the game was so new, it was difficult to know what to look for. There were Chun-Li?s and Ryu?s and Blancas everywhere. After an hour or so of watching, I got to know a couple guys and asked who the best was. One name came back to me consistently-
Willie Lee.
He was the one that was winning all the small tourneys at that time people said. Pac-Man had a small tourney every Saturday with about 10-20 players and it was Willie who was dominating them. I asked what character he played, and they told me it was Guile. Guile?? :amazed: I was curious to see how he was doing it with Guile, when there were other much more mobile characters. Was he around I asked? There were lots of players there, but no Willie was not one of them, but they said he would be there in a while.
So I waited?..
To be continued
BTW I talked to Tomo today, so he?ll be visiting this thread soon. Dunno if he?ll post or not, but just be aware that he?s reading and following it from here on out. I was laughing with him over the phone cause the new pics of Tomo here posted by Gerald (L.A. Akira) are exactly like he looked back in 1992ish. lol
He hasn’t aged a bit? :wgrin:
You guys are waaaaaaaay too paranoid about this kind of stuff.
Tomo’s a wayy kool dude, and always has been. Way back when he was 13-14 he was hanging with peeps in their late teens and early twenties. No one even thought he was a kid, we all thought he was like 17 or 18.
Please don’t confuse Tomo with Jeff. Jeff’s always been a little paranoid… :wgrin:

Nice post Ronin, seriously, I want to hear more now, I really want to read what the the top players at the time about their thoughts and what was running through their heads when they where in those tournament matchups. I want to hear things like “I knew he was going to do this, so I countered exactly like this.” or “He completely threw me off when he pulled this off.” kind of things ya know, really specific details like that, it would be great, and if Tomo is indeed reading all of this, it would be pretty sweet if he would type down a memorable moment he had back in the Golden Era day’s of SF2, it would be nice to read it from his perspective.
Good stuff, keep em comming, for me though, when it was 1991, I was only 9 yrs old, so it was difficult for me to have access to the arcades, except during the weekends when my Uncle who was 18-19 yrs old then would take me and my younger brother to go play SF2, or else I would have to bike the three miles with my brother’s and some of my cousins just to play it, which we did alot even during the weekdays. I didn’t get good(remember, within my local area) until around mid 93…man, I how I wished I lived in Cali during the height of SF2:sad: .
Hope to hear some stories of matchups from you guys soon, good stuff, this thread is definetly gold.
Thanks for the thank you Seph. :wgrin:
All of us back then were so much into what we doing at the time, playing and having fun PWNing, that we never even thought about how or what peeps might think about it 1 year from then, much less 10+ years. hehe
It’s really awesome that peeps look back at SF2 history, and what we initially built at World’s Finest, in the respect many here have for it… :wgrin:
Sorry for not posting for a couple weeks, but I’ve been building a new gaming computer. I just finished it yesterday, so I’ll be on more here now.
