If you can get me SF2 CE era vids that I can host that would be great
Sigh…I was hoping that someone may have videotaped some vids of Tomo in his prime, I’ve never seen the guy play before, I only know of how much of a beast he was back in the day through people here and reading up about him. I wished there was vids of him beasting though
this thread is gold
agreed, I’m glad this was bumped since I missed it the first time, this is one of the most engrossing threads I’ve read in a long time, I love hearing about this stuff. Unfortunately a lot of the old Rapidshare links have expired, but yeah
I was 12 when SF2 WW came out and I never really knew how to do anything in the game, it wasn’t until CE came out that I actually learned how to do DP’s and shit. I sucked so bad and always wanted to play the CPU instead, but of course in those days, a SF2 machine was almost always busy from opening to close. It saddens me that back then I had no appreciation for the fact that competition was so abundant, EVERYBODY PLAYED. Those were some really good times. I enjoyed reading the tournament coverage in GamePro and the like and always wished there had been big tournaments where I had lived (South Texas at the time). I even still have that SF2 Turbo combo video that was released here, I watched it again and laughed at how annoying that “host” was. Even Tomo looked like he was fed up with him at one point, hahah.
anyway, keep the stories and videos coming guys.
Thanks alot BBH, I didn’t realise you posted on here too. I’m a big fan of the Marp site, and thanks again for the link to the ZunZun site, its a real goldmine:

If there areany of those expired rapidshare files you want, let me know and I’ll post them up again for you. Keep safe, Crayfish.
Are you kidding??? I always prefered Hyper Fighting over ST for old school. I always thought why do “they” play ST over Hyper Fighting? Last time I got a Hyper Fighting jones was when Nelson came to Nebraska and played Butch with Guile. I knew Jason was on some other shit when he kept jumping str8 up with jab to keep is charge. That game is sick!!!

ps Guile voice for for Sonic Boom in Hyper>>>>>>>His voice for it in ST:sad:
Excellent, excellent thread. Definitely brings back memories of reading about many of these old-school players in the mags, guides and such.
BTW, I don’t know if anyone else has this, but I managed to dig an old Capcom SF2 promotional VHS tape out of the garage a couple of months ago. It’s about 45 mins. long, has basic combos and strats for all the characters, and Tomo Ohira is actually featured prominently throughout. It even has cheesy commercials for all the Hasbro SF action figs.
This doesn’t sound like the “Tomo Teaches SF2” tape everyone is describing (I’d love to see that, or any other old-school SF footage!), it’s an official Capcom tape.
Someone needs to get these tapes ripped asap.
That sounds great m8, would there be any chance of you being able to get this ripped and posted? Sure everyone would love to see it, I know I would…

Crayfish.
I’m willing to encode VHS tapes if people want to send me the tapes…
Preppy, I will send you my tape for encoding, PM me with your shipping details. All I ask is that you return it promptly, as it’s part of my SF collection.
Massive thanks to Bill Wood and Preppy for uploading the Tomo Ohira teaches Hyper Fighting tape *fantastic work guys:

Was a real kick watching this, especialy finaly getting to see the legend and getting a few tips from him too. I think contemporary combovid makes could take a lesson or two from this too. Like having the actual characters talk some shit to you before busting out thier tricks
r3ko kindly dug out A LOAD of great alt.games sf2 threads for the Hyper Fighting thread recently: http://www.shoryuken.com/forums/showthread.php?p=3136570#post3136570
Its an amazing resource, not only an archive of every strat and tactical discussion from 92 onwards but a glimpse into that golden era as_it_happened. I’ve especialy been enjoying reading the different names for the moves people made up (every scene had thier own, didn’t they…), like refering to Vega’s offthewall move as the ‘Screaming Eagle’ and Fireballs bein called ‘Spirit Balls’.
Crayfish :china:
Glad to see you enjoyed the tape, Crayfish!
BTW, here’s a link to my Street Fighter memorabilia page, which may have bring back memories for some of you:
Good stuff Crayfish
Very nice collection m8. I have the Hyper Fighting Guidebook (UK version, is unchanged afaik). I’m gonna hunt down those other two. If there are any pages that you think are historicaly interesting would be cool to post some scans. I seem to remember that Gamepro did a fighters edge for SSF2 that included two 10point ranking charts. From what I remember there was an overall one, then one for the top tier only, with Sagat and Guile topping respectively. Did they use those in the actual book? Damn why did I thow that away?!?!
btw did you see that ‘other’ Jap HF guide video here:

Big thanks for this to all involved, still downloading it on my crappy connection, but who wouldn’t love old-school vids, especially of Tomo?

It’s funny the stuff people came up with like for guiles flash kick, they called it the jackknife kick where he would literally put a knife in his boot then kick you.
Or when he sonicboomed, an airplane flew really quick overhead to create the sonic boom.
lol i remember my griend saying that guile did have a knife in his boot. funny ass times when we didnt even know how to do a freakin spd!!!
i have 1 question however: i know how to do 'sims reset and invis and how to do hand cuffs, freeze and invis throw and reset, BUT the one thing i heard was ACTUALLY in the game(unlike sheng long and bracelets) was the ENDLESS HURRICANE KICK… was this real??? i never saw, it but marco alvarado told me that he had indeed heard that it was real from a reputable source but said he never actually saw it. if anyone can confirm this vids would be nice

I don’t think the endless hurricane kick is real, the rumor may have begun from one of the hacked versions, they have some like 20hit hurricane kicks in them.
My fave myth was that you could pick up the rock in ChunSagat stage ad thrw it at the opponent That one stood for ages in my scene.
Speakng of street fighter history, it goes back further than I imagined!!
