I read an article in the local newspaper (The St. Paul Pioneer Press) about how retail stores were going to stop selling CRTs in replace of LCDs and HDTVs by 2008; this is a huge blow for competitive fighting games (unless the game is Virtua Fighter 5 or Tekken 6). We all know about the fiasco at EVO East 2006, where the EVO staff had to quickly get some CRT monitors, because the televisions they were handed, had noticeable input lag. If this situation happened in 2008 or 2009, then it wouldn’t be possible to get the CRTs, which means people would have to bring their own TVs, which creates a mess. We might not have to think about it currently, but in a couple of years, this is going to be a problem.
I’m pretty sure only HDTVs have lag. LCDs are fine.
I didn’t want to open a new thread for this since relates but does Time Crisis 4 work with LCD screens? because the earlier ones only worked on CRT’s.
I found the articles, but to get the whole of it, you have to register, so here is part of it:
I personally have the article to the second quote, and if anyone is interested in me posting it, then I guess I can do that.
Some LCD TVs can have pretty bad pixel reaction of 25-30 ms or even more, which equals to at least 2F of lag. And thats bad.
Well there’s ways around it, PS3s can upscale for one thing. According to this:
http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus
CvS2
SFAA
SFAC
GGAC
All KoFs except 95
All work flawlessly.
Tekken DR is on the PS3. SFHD is coming out. VF5 is on the 360.
And plus the average household has more than 2 TVs. Even when they do get phased out it shouldn’t be hard to find them in a swap meet for dirt cheap.
The only problem I can think of is Marvel, which is a HUGE one. But there are some HDTVs that support 480p native which means they have no input lag on SDTV signals.
Evo will find a way to adapt.
Doesn’t digital just mean they’ll only have TV’s with digital tuners? There are plenty of SDTV’s with digital tuners.
But if it really does mean everything will the HD, what the fuck. Are people really that oblivious to lag? In my experience it’s all pretty noticable.
That’s how I took it. I don’t see the cathode ray tube technology going anywhere. That would be pretty nuts.
Everyone save your CRTs and buy some new ones and later on dump them on Ebay for $10,000
Do you think more than ~.3% of the population gives a shit about lag from scaling? If you do you’re very wrong.
To the dude who said LCDs dont lag, uhh yes they do in the way that most srkers are concerned.
well I use a 20" sanyo LCD tv and works fine.
if the game is HD like the new sf games coming out, will they lag at all on hdtv? i’m confused with all this stuff.
HD games won’t lag. Basically anything that isn’t next-gen will lag.
Not 100% sure on the wii, tho.
thanks for clearing that up for me.
This is why I have two TV’s. One of them is a tube, and next to that is a widescreen LCD.
If you guys insist on having only one TV though, that one certain panasonic HDTV might be your best bet. I forgot the model #, but it was discussed in the HDTV thread from Tech Talk.
there are some HDTVs that have the ability to play older games without lag.
You just need to make sure that your HDTV has native 480i support or you can buy an upscaler.
Links? Model numbers?
This is interesting to me; can you link me the source?
My CRT is over 10 years old and still going strong. I reckon they’ll be able to dig a few up from second hand stores.
I’m not planning to buy a plasma or LCD. I’m waiting for the new technology (forget what it’s called) to become affordable, where large flat screens will be available that are as good quality as CRTs.
