Iwata has made it clear in past interviews that not only does Nintendo not want to compete with MS/Sony on the hardware front, but they simply can’t afford to do so.
I hate saying it, but they need to show and prove to 3rd party devs that things the big boys do to make money will work on their console as well. SquareEnix redid Tomb Raider for the new consoles, yet the WiiU STILL doesn’t have it - why? Because they saw the screen and didn’t want to do anything different than what they were doing on the other consoles. Nintendo has to show that anything you can do on console A, you cna do on their console. There should exist no excuse for a multi-platform game to NOT hit the WiiU. Some of this has happend with CoD Ghost and AC3 I think it was.
:bluu:
Being successful doesn’t equate to a cash grab, it just means it was a damn good game or just performed well for some various reason. Cash grab means the game was designed to siphon money from people either through DLC or expansions or in-app purchases. The same way Capcom put SFxT together using the same character models from SF4. Nothing inherently wrong with it, but the game itself was a cash grab, from the on disc ‘expansion’, to the in app gems, to the DLC costumes. It was a pure money grab. On the flip, the big Nintendo IPs are just successful, can’t call it a csah grab, what I’m trying to say though is they need to transform one or two of them INTO cash grabs. For instance - skylanders - you buy the game for $75. It comes with three figures and the portal. From there, to access certain areas you need different elements or ‘swap types’, and just variety comes into picture, so you go to the store and spend $10 to buy a single toy figure that unlocks the ability to play as that character in the game. the first game had 32 characters so at $10-12 a pop to collect them all you were dropping $375+ for stuff already on the disc. This doesn’t include variants like “legendaries” that have slightly better stats and a different color motif. On the second game they did 16 new ‘core’ figures, 8 new giants figures (they cost more) and 8 “reposes” or re-releases of previous figures with an additional power. Then they just did Swapforce, which has 8 reposes 16 cores and 16 ‘swap’ characters which - since they have additional functionality - instead of running 10 dollars they go for up to 17. Of course there are variants like ‘dark’ or ‘legendary’ or ‘nitro’ and ‘enchanted’ that convince people to buy multiples of the same characters. So over 4 years its easy to have dropped $1000 on three video games that are built with on disc unlockable content that cost an absurd amount of money. That’s how Activision made 500 million dollars last year in JUST Skylander TOYS. Disney has something similar though they are still on their first iteration. Nintendo needs to tap into that…they have the IPs to tap into the ‘digitized toys’ market.
They don’t need to do that per say - but they need expansions. You sight CoDs at Gamestop, but Activision already made their money off it. If it wasn’t for GTAV, CoD would have won 2013 again. And the thing about resources - YOU CAN BUY MORE. That’s actually part of this whole issue, they launched the Wii U and the big game for it was Zombie U, not Super Mario U, not Smash, not Kart, not Party, it wasn’t even a First party game. They should have already pushed some of those games out the door, and I’m nto saying at the sake of quality, but a lot of the development time could be expedited with a larger work force. My main point being, if they are going to be the only developer in town, then they need to populate the pond with as many tadpoles as possible. If they want to stick to ‘once per console’ mistake then fine, but they need to generate revenue during the cycle.
Yep, I just wanted to cosign that last part. It’s just weird to me because up through the N64 Nintendo tried to have the best hardware. I remember the Ultra 64 specs blowing everything out the water at the time. N64 was powerful too…then the Gamecube started the trend towards low cost and gimmicky (I still can’t get over the disc). The Wii U has sooo much potential though, it just needs that push.
What would happen if Nintendo decided to release a smartphone with their own OS bundled with a bluetooth snes-ish-type controller. And that for a comptetetive price? Shit would go crazy and peoples would be throwing their iphones and androids out the window.
I was thinking they’d integrate the controller (kinda like a PSP Go) but a separated controller makes just as much sense. Maybe they latch to each other while not it use.
Edit: Oops the order of the posts was different after refreshing the page, sorry about the double post!
I would be all for that if it wasn’t for the fact that buttons do get worn out with time and then there are people that just simply like to go HAM on stuff. So i think that a replacable controller would be the better option but i def see where you’re coming from.
They could do something magical. Keep the slide feature for the bottom screen, but have a proprietary, attachable controller… case or whatever… I’m not sweating the details! Make it happen Nintendo, this is free gold!
I’m not sure why you’re laughing; he’s absolutely right. You’re tapping harder than Cisco. You may as well start calling yourself SRK’s greatest poster and declare you’re undefeated in mobile gaming threads.
Hell you’re tapping harder than BEWD did to Bloofy when the latter revealed the former nearly offed himself over a fucking sandwich. That’s pretty messed up.
What the fuck are you even talking about? Lady, I can’t read your mind; whatever confusing threads of “logic” you got spinning in there that makes this meaningless collection of words make any sort of sense, I ain’t privy to.
The mating call of the bitch: “keep telling yourself” followed by the factual thing I’m supposed to keep telling myself. Um yeah kid, I will keep telling myself that on account of it being right. It is a “thing.” A well-documented, growing, sometimes-shitty sometimes-awesome thing.
The amount of gamers who actually give a fuck is inversely proportionate to your ability to talk to me like you’re anywhere near my level, a flaw you compound by pissing and moaning about forum corner traps like a true scrub. The empty left half of my scrotum understands that mobile gaming’s popularity is well-documented, and I’d compare you to said scrotum half further but at least that flap of skin isn’t totally useless.
I am content to let the future play out. History shall inevitably prove my point. You all will no doubt cite alleged “reasons” why despite being wrong, you were nonetheless right, whereas the truth of facts contradicting you even as they are set in stone are somehow wrong, but that is your intellectual dishonesty, and none of me.
You speak of Nintendo needing to change, in order to adapt to the “new market forces”.
But there is nothing new under the sun.
What exists is simply a market that has extended its grasp beyond its user base. Pretentious people speak of “catching lightening in a bottle”. This is incorrect thought. What occurred was a fad; pure and simple. Nintendo caught the attention of a culture passing ennui. The “new” re: non-gamers are not coming back. They never were there to begin with. Pursuing such as those is a futile effort. There were no roots. Put simply, there was no sincere interest. It was just a thing, to them – a one night stand, at the start of last gen, and then on to something else. The collapse of this segment is inevitable. It was built on sand.
Pursuing the market as something that is ever-expanding is insanity. It is insane in any market, as history demonstrates time and again. Just so, the pursuit of the illusory “casual gamer”. They are not gamers. What they are, is hardcore consumers. And hardcore consumers are toxic to pretty much everything. How much more so, to an industry that owes the longevity of its existence to its most passionate fans, both in the market and in the industry itself?
No, Nintendo should not go after the cellular market. It is a fool’s gambit, espoused by fools; fools and those who would fool fools – those with vested interests in such fooling i.e. the cellular industry, it’s ad men, and the misguided, thoroughly inane patsies who keep on loudly and stupidly advocating it as if it were an actual thing.
You are a waste of breath - your own, and anyone who talks at your immutably stupid face.
If you were worth the effort, I’d go in on your feminist pegging loving ass, like you long for me (or anyone, really) to - but you’re too easy a target.
No doubt you’ve spared me quite the verbal beatdown, if you calling my face stupid is any indication.
Also, bitch please: you’re exactly the kind of tantrum-throwing kid who wouldn’t wait two seconds to “own” someone on an internet forum. In fact you already tried – badly, I might add. “Easy target” indeed. What now Goku, do the weighted clothes come off or something?
I do actually believe you tried. Tried really really hard. I know this from evidence in this very thread: you came out swinging when called on your bullshit and basically did everything except show that non-existent proof backing up said bullshit, and only now are you waxing poetic about having not tried. It’s like troll MO: post dumb uneducated opinion, cry like a whore that you were “trolling” when called on. It’d be cute really, if you didn’t rank somewhere between pinkeye and a shoulder blade itch on the tolerance scale.
Funny that; if you were even like 10% as verbally capable as you claim here, you’d have buried me in all the things I was wrong about. We’ve already conclusively proven you lack the subtlety to let that sort of shit go, so the odds you’re just waiting for some reason is 0. Speaking of which…
0 precedent is too much precedent? Something something negative numbers something something god you’re a fucking imbecile.
Again: flames? “Your face is ugly” isn’t a flame, shithead: it’s a cry for help. What’s really bothering you Azure? And I’m going to need that in the form of a statement on how those big, scary women did it to you.
Well fuck it, I might as well just get the ol’ seppuku over and done with, eh? Fuck if I don’t mean anything to you what good is my intestinal tract doing inside my body?
Well actually if you weren’t a blithering idiot you’d know that I’ll praise Nintendo when they do shit right. A basic-ass search in the 3DS or Wii U thread makes your whole “wah wah you hate Nintendo” moaning sound… well I was going to say dumb but relatively speaking it’s par for the course with you isn’t it? Fuck I really want to say something about genitalia now… hmm… well I just felt for lumps in my one remaining testicle and, finding none, I can’t compare you to cancer, and outright calling you a testicle implies you possess some usefulness… Tell you what, we’ll come back to that.
Oh man, single digit IQ and a Nintendo fanboy? That’s a winning combination. Smogon advocate? Smashboards poster? I’d ask why the fuck you think Nintendo failing in the console market has fuck all to do with me but those hotel beds in other peoples’ rooms aren’t going to semen stain themselves.
So let’s take stock of your flaming prowess: “your birds are angry,” “your face is ugly,” “you gnash your teeth.” Can I make a recommendation? Don’t breed. I shudder to think of the poor children so magnificently unlucky as to have you as their mom. Best stick to your natural talents: firing beams of vagina sand like some sort of crossdressing retarded Cable spotting a bad assist call.
Protip: if you’re going to be a zealot, speak more highly of the object of your affection than to simply state it will “endure.” That’s like openly admitting you’re a fan of shit.
@specs ignore it already. Azure is obviously blind because cell phone gaming is enormous and we (you and I and others here) know the numbers back it up. There are far more cell phones in the wild than consoles, everyone has them and people play games on them. Doesn’t matter if they’re “real games” or not, that’s what people do when they aren’t sending texts because people are certainly not talking on them anymore.
Any company, Nintendo or otherwise, to ignore that market is stupid. It’s a huge source of potential to be tapped and as certain publishers get realized on the platform they’ll be the new Nintendo, Sony, and MS, and if others don’t follow suit, they’ll be too late to the party. Kids these days are growing up playing on their communication devices, they’ll grow up accepting that as the norm and once they become of age, hand held consoles and regular consoles won’t matter. It will be multi use devices like PC’s, tablets, laptops, and cell phones that get all the gaming glory.
