The cell phone market is ridiculously huge. I work at 2 different restaurants and I never, ever see kids playing on DS or 3DS anymore. Not even PSP or Vita. Well, every now and then I may see a PSP or a 3DS but not often. Every kid I see is playing on a cell phone. Every family I see eating at a table? The kids are playing on their cell phones.
And why not? 1 less device you have to carry, plus these things are more powerful than your 3DS and they have ridiculously cheap games by the numbers.
Anyone who says that people:
Don’t want to play games on cell phones
That cell phones are crap
That cell phones only handle flash games
Do not have any clue what the reality is. The reality is that EVERYONE AND EVEN THEIR GRAMMAWS are playing on cell phones. Cell phones today are capable of handling graphics that your PS3 and 360 can. Cell phone games have moved way beyond crappy flash games.
Anyone who claims otherwise is simply living in denial. All you have to do is go out to eat or to a movie or to a park and see most everyone has an iPhone or a Droid phone that is more than capable of playing games.
Game developers would be straight up retarded to ignore that massive market.
Want to know why the Wii sold well? Because it was for everyone, even grammaws and grampaws could play that shit. Well, that market is dead because Grammaw and Grampaw would have to sit in front of a TV. Soccer moms would have to be at home and not out at a soccer field. Well, why bother with that when you can take grammaw and grampaw and soccer mommy games on the go? Grammaw and grampaw can lay in bed and play Tetris-Clone 9000zxs!
It’s a fucking ENORMOUS market. As a hardcore gamer I realize I am the minority now a days. That huge market of people who want to play Angry Birds porn star editoin while sitting on the shitter? Far larger than me, who wants to play on a big screen. They outnumber us. The Wii should have been a clear indicator of just how large that market is.
Sadly, Nintendo thought they could tap into the cell phone gamer market by introducing a console that plays like cell phone games but has legacy buttons. What. The. Fuck. Why throw away the grammaw casual market? Probably because they saw hard data that people like playing cell phone games by the bucket loads and that those same people moved on from the Wii to those platforms. They also see that people love touch screen gaming from their DS and 3DS sales. Well, why not make a console that does just that? Maybe good logic, but that would be if the cell phone market wasn’t already completely obliterating the touch screen gaming market. Toss in the logic of why would I buy a console to play games cell phone style when I already have a cell phone more powerful than a Wii U with the confusion around the console name and you can see why the Wii U is tanking.
Anyway, all conjecture aside, I would personally love to see them release Nintendo games on Steam. Any and all Nintendo games, why not? PC is a thriving market, it’s humongous, and is as backwards compatible friendly as it gets. As someone already pointed out, piracy is a problem of service as stated by Gaben. If Nintendo made a legit, cycle accurate emulator (or even officially sanctioned one of the current emulator teams like Nestopia UE) and put it up on Steam and sold their entire back catalog of games for $3 to $5, they’d completely squash the ROM scene and could also make one for the Android platform and then squash the Android ROM scene and actually make money off it. Plus, creating new titles for the platforms to take advantage of their hardware limitations and lack of buttons would also make sense besides trying to cash in on a huge and nostalgia favored catalog. That enormous market of Apple/*nix based handheld devices is too large to ignore.
I see gaming coming down to 2 platforms. Droid/iPhone gaming, and PC. At some point consoles will become less and less relevant in the long run, and will turn into service platforms like Netflix. Streaming will most likely take part over local gaming (gotta fight dat piracy and all dem used gosh dern dang games) which will be possible on smart TV’s, DVR’s, PC’s and cell phones. Local gaming will most likely remain prevalent on PC, since PC is and always has been about performance. People who will buy into Sony Gaming Serivces to stream games won’t care about the graphics just as most console gamers don’t care.
Anyway, tl:dr I would love to see Nintendo games on other platforms, at least PC. I don’t plan to get a new console any time soon so that would make me happy. :\
