Nintendo considers move to smartphones

Once they start putting the packages together they’ll start moving the units. A Pokemon bunduru, Smash blothels bunduru and of course a mario bunduru (kart and otherwise).

Mario Kart is set out in the Spring, so a couple of months. Smash doesn’t have a date but is expected this year. Looking on IGN for the release dates though, there really aren’t very many games. But that is true for XBone too it seems. I remember back when I’d check X360 and PS3 there would be a lot of games.

Bayo2 or Smash is getting me to buy a Wii u. It’s just a matter of which one is coming out first.

Yeah, pretty much that is my thoughts. Do you have any evidence to counter my theory?

I believe that is a matter of opinion. Do you know any other platforms other than the Atari 2600 and Philips CDi than had Nintendo IP?

I agree with this, I played emulated NES and SNES games on android phones before, they play like ass. Only Nintendo game I see making a good transition to touch screen is Panel de Pon/Puzzle League and maybe a Wario Ware. Maybe Turn based RPGs where controls do not need to be as tight. DS titles where touch screen was the sole means of Game play. I wouldn’t put any of the SNES/NES back catalog on the Android and iOS market as emulators are already there and the emulator and roms are free. Why I want to pay $5 of Super Mario for my Phone where with a quick Google search I can get the same game for free. The VC catalog gives some viability to the DSI/Wii ware market.
Why would I want to buy a Wii/ Wii U for retro games if I can get the same games for my phone.
Only way I see this working if Nintendo makes a hybrid DS and Smart Phone as well. And the idea didn’t pan out too well with Sony and their Emerson/PSP hybrid.

Ninteno Apps I see working with very little redesign are like a Pokedex or a app for the Poke bank.

I don’t think anyone’s suggesting Nintendo is in danger of going broke, but people aren’t buying their stuff. They could afford to make a new console, but they’re wasting money partnering with chip companies and marketing and selling to retailers and etc., if they can’t do anything to stay relevant.

64 sold okay but way less than PS1 and was a fall from grace after NES/SNES, GC raced to the bottom with Xbox, Wii fad came and went, Wii U was so horribly marketed, a lot of mainstream customers probably think Nintendo isn’t even around any more, only thing on store shelves is that Wii thing from 2006, now with its own screen or something. Now mobiles make more money than their handhelds and are redefining gaming on the go for a lot of people on the whole planet. So Nintendo really has to think long and hard what their next move is going to be if they want to you know make money.

Holy fuck.

I think Fire Emblem would work really really well on a touch screen device. Don’t think Nintendo’s ever going to release on a mobile platform that isn’t their own tho, nor do I think they should.

That’s why if Nintendo does do this, they need to BOTH make a great game system AND a great phone.

Half-assing either aspect will cause them to fail.

Full stop.

And no… nobody really wants to play cell phone games.

A device that plays real games, that is both a jack AND a master of all, however, is a nice goal to strive towards.

why not both? with support of up to a 128 gb SD card, you could store all the things you want. doing this allows you to hit all demographics basically. it would be a little pricey but a lot of people would dish out the extra money for a 2-in-1 thing if it’s done really well (basically, as long as it’s not the ngage)

here’s a simple design, you take the standard DS (only one with a good size for a phone), move the speakers to the bottom of the DS (like facing outwards), put the top screen on the back of that part (so basically flip the top part over), and make it bigger (similar to an S4 size). now instead of it being a flip open, it’s now a slide open. when closed, it’s a phone, standard android, iphone, etc. now when you slide it open, it’s a 3ds (it’ll look similar to a 2DS when open). you’ll have to do some coding magic to make sure it can answer calls and stuff but that shouldn’t be a big deal. also being 3g and 4g capable would be a gigantic fucking boost to all of us who love our 3ds’ (being able to play online anywhere, come on now, who doesn’t want that). the final design would be slimmed down to be more…appropriate for a phone

while this would be big for a phone it combines the best of both worlds and can still look sleek as hell and with both screens being touch screen, well, you just opened a new can of worms

You keep saying this like it’s true and insightful. It is neither. On the contrary, reality proves that a lot of people really want to play cell phone games. Reality also says that if you get off your hipster gamer high horse you’ll see that cell phone games encompass a whole bunch of genres and playstyles, not just “lol casualbird angryfarm lol I’m such a hardcore gamer.”

My, my.

Quite the angry bird, aren’t we Princess?

The facts are that reality does not back you up.

Unless by back you up, you mean something else entirely, involving the diametric opposite of what you assert, inserted forcibly into the sphincter out of which you speak ( most of us just use it to poop).

Cell phone games are disposable shit, bought on impulse or out of ennui.

They are not the same market as real gaming, and, until such a time as a cell phone gets designed as a gaming console, from the ground up, never shall be.

The only hipster in here, is the one jamming his Android between his hips, clicking vibrate, and making a “game” out of missed calls.

they should make a TOAD APP. where he’d just give you all kinds of bad news. like people dying and shit

Smartphone/tablet games are only 5-ish years old. Remember how janky PS1/early console 3d played? Granted they were more creative, but the games were made by seasoned developers and designers, and a healthy budget, instead of indie/upstart talent and resources. And we’re just now seeing familiar game publishers taking a serious look at smart devices. Maybe smart devices have potential to make all-time-great games, maybe not, it’s too early to tell. Miyamoto claimed that he could have designed Halo, why doesn’t he try to make or oversee a great smart device game?

The cell phone market is ridiculously huge. I work at 2 different restaurants and I never, ever see kids playing on DS or 3DS anymore. Not even PSP or Vita. Well, every now and then I may see a PSP or a 3DS but not often. Every kid I see is playing on a cell phone. Every family I see eating at a table? The kids are playing on their cell phones.

And why not? 1 less device you have to carry, plus these things are more powerful than your 3DS and they have ridiculously cheap games by the numbers.

Anyone who says that people:

Don’t want to play games on cell phones
That cell phones are crap
That cell phones only handle flash games

Do not have any clue what the reality is. The reality is that EVERYONE AND EVEN THEIR GRAMMAWS are playing on cell phones. Cell phones today are capable of handling graphics that your PS3 and 360 can. Cell phone games have moved way beyond crappy flash games.

Anyone who claims otherwise is simply living in denial. All you have to do is go out to eat or to a movie or to a park and see most everyone has an iPhone or a Droid phone that is more than capable of playing games.

Game developers would be straight up retarded to ignore that massive market.

Want to know why the Wii sold well? Because it was for everyone, even grammaws and grampaws could play that shit. Well, that market is dead because Grammaw and Grampaw would have to sit in front of a TV. Soccer moms would have to be at home and not out at a soccer field. Well, why bother with that when you can take grammaw and grampaw and soccer mommy games on the go? Grammaw and grampaw can lay in bed and play Tetris-Clone 9000zxs!

It’s a fucking ENORMOUS market. As a hardcore gamer I realize I am the minority now a days. That huge market of people who want to play Angry Birds porn star editoin while sitting on the shitter? Far larger than me, who wants to play on a big screen. They outnumber us. The Wii should have been a clear indicator of just how large that market is.

Sadly, Nintendo thought they could tap into the cell phone gamer market by introducing a console that plays like cell phone games but has legacy buttons. What. The. Fuck. Why throw away the grammaw casual market? Probably because they saw hard data that people like playing cell phone games by the bucket loads and that those same people moved on from the Wii to those platforms. They also see that people love touch screen gaming from their DS and 3DS sales. Well, why not make a console that does just that? Maybe good logic, but that would be if the cell phone market wasn’t already completely obliterating the touch screen gaming market. Toss in the logic of why would I buy a console to play games cell phone style when I already have a cell phone more powerful than a Wii U with the confusion around the console name and you can see why the Wii U is tanking.

Anyway, all conjecture aside, I would personally love to see them release Nintendo games on Steam. Any and all Nintendo games, why not? PC is a thriving market, it’s humongous, and is as backwards compatible friendly as it gets. As someone already pointed out, piracy is a problem of service as stated by Gaben. If Nintendo made a legit, cycle accurate emulator (or even officially sanctioned one of the current emulator teams like Nestopia UE) and put it up on Steam and sold their entire back catalog of games for $3 to $5, they’d completely squash the ROM scene and could also make one for the Android platform and then squash the Android ROM scene and actually make money off it. Plus, creating new titles for the platforms to take advantage of their hardware limitations and lack of buttons would also make sense besides trying to cash in on a huge and nostalgia favored catalog. That enormous market of Apple/*nix based handheld devices is too large to ignore.

I see gaming coming down to 2 platforms. Droid/iPhone gaming, and PC. At some point consoles will become less and less relevant in the long run, and will turn into service platforms like Netflix. Streaming will most likely take part over local gaming (gotta fight dat piracy and all dem used gosh dern dang games) which will be possible on smart TV’s, DVR’s, PC’s and cell phones. Local gaming will most likely remain prevalent on PC, since PC is and always has been about performance. People who will buy into Sony Gaming Serivces to stream games won’t care about the graphics just as most console gamers don’t care.

Anyway, tl:dr I would love to see Nintendo games on other platforms, at least PC. I don’t plan to get a new console any time soon so that would make me happy. :\

Nah, he just tells you that hot chic you see at the bar is currently on her way to another dude’s castle.

^ need MAD button

It can save Nintendo. Lets be honest, they always compensate for not being up to hardware standards with some kind of innovation, but their attempt to be a modern day tablet/console with the wiiU did not work. Its clumsy, unimpressive, and cannot compare to what the ps4 and xboxone can do.

I mean, cell phones really are the widest used “portables” out there, and nintendo games have barely been anything more than gameboy standard for a LONG time. Easily playable by smartphones, for many years now. I mean, has any company lived off the same titles/games longer than nintendo? Pokemon, mario, Zelda, etc could all have been played on smart. Who cares if they dont make consoles anymore, they havent been able to compete with consoles for awhile. As long as they still make fun ass games that would be PRIME for smart phones as they are we will all be happy.

They seriously dropped the ball with their 3DS nintendo marketplace though. I was very surprised when I got my 3ds a year ago. I mean, why isnt every nintendo game ever just automatically available??

Was this a fucking flame? Jesus titty-fucking Christ it was too. That was terrible.

Protip: if you aren’t going to do it right, don’t do it at all. Today’s SRK may be a much tamer, friendlier place than in the past (which is probably for the best) but SRK GD has produced some of the most brilliant flames I’ve ever read.

You could have said “oh look, it’s fucking specs with his lips wrapped around my cock gurgling something about high horses. I guess I better fucking listen. In a second… one second… aaaaah. Okay, go.” And even that’s not horribly brilliant but it wouldn’t have made me slap my head in disgust.

In order:

Actually yes they do asshole. Mobile gaming is like the fastest growing gaming market. I suspect you don’t know what “facts” are but here’s a tip: if something makes sense in your head but not in physical reality, it’s probably not a fact.

Google it. Normally claims require the claimant back it up but after this semen stain of a post I’m not exactly jumping at the bit to educate you.

Some cell phone games are disposable shit. As are some NES games, some SNES games, some any platform you care to mention games. Because the platform doesn’t magically impart some quality on its titles. Stop riding the unicorns in magic fantasy rainbow land where up is down and Azure makes sense because it’s doing you no fucking good.

They’re the same market on account of being games. What the fuck does “real gaming” mean anyway? Is the superior version of Sonic 2 on Android that runs in native widescreen at 60 FPS with tons of fucking features and gamepad support not real gaming because Azure says so? You’re an authority on fuck all.

Oh god, more shitty flaming. You heard it here first, folks: this is what passes for a “burn” these days. Hot damn I better cower into a corner at the awesome power of implying I use my phone’s vibrator as a masturbatory aid you know what it’s just easier to call you an idiot. You’re an idiot.

Note to self: Don’t ever piss @specs off by posting dumb shit on SRK.

How is this still a topic when Ninty already denied making the move.

People that have no financial knowledge or idea how to run multi-billion dollar companies like to come onto the internet and pretend they are experts on both matters. I am still waiting for someone to cite the 10-Qs and 10-Ks to actually support anything. My guess is nobody ever will.
