I always held the opinion that the Vita be the greatest handheld ever if it got the support it needed. The Vita’s problem is not only is third parties are avoiding but Sony themselves have given up on it. Indies and niche Japanese games is all that’s carrying it now. I’ll snatch up any hunting and RPG on the Vita as I can but it’s sad it’s gotten to this state in it’s short 3 year life.
The PS Vita ran into the same dilemma that the Neo Geo home systems did.
The Cost of Development.
The thing is Hand Helds don’t always get the same budget as Console games.
Sony built the VITA like a console, it got better specs than the PS3/Xbox 360 while the 3DS is barely above Game Cube specs.
What really helped Nintendo with Handhelds is mostly from their former lead engineer Gunpei Yokoi’s philosophy.
"Lateral thinking with withered technology ".
Sticking to tried and tested technology that been fully documented so they get the most use of out.
This also means lower development costs to the game developers.
It was why the Original Gameboy DMG outsold much more advanced color hand helds like the Atari Lynx and Sega Game Gear.
Gunpei Yokoi’s only failure was the Virtual Boy which was put into production before Gunpei was done developing the prototype.
It also delayed his retirement, as Gunpei did not want to create the appearance of he being fired for the Virtual Boy’s failure.
Problem Sony did get till it was too late is that they over engineered the Vita, a problem many Japanese Engineers are having lately.
While this is is true it isn’t necessarily true when it comes to the slight upgrade platform like between the DS to the DSi. There were very few exclusives on the DSi and most if not all of them were not noteworthy. If anything I expect most 3rd parties to do like Hoamaru said and just make it so that if you play on n3DS you get special enhancements or features you don’t get in comparison to playing it on a regular one.
I’ve been thinking about this quite a bit lately, but does anybody else think that a new Phantasy Star game could do pretty well on the 3DS? Maybe even as an N3DS exclusive? This is just me thinking about the people who just hopped on the Monster Hunter train.
Give til next year when at this and next years E3 they drop a ton of shit like more exclusive and wii u or whatever the new wii they announced is called integration and shit like that
Games that I see on my list thus far that are not RPGS are Hatsune Miku Project Mirai DX, Lego Jurrassic World, Senran Kagura 2 Deep Crimson, and Rodea the Sky Soldier. More than likely we’re gonna have to wait until after E3 to find out what else in store for the 2nd half of the year. Kinda hoping the Twilight Princess rumor is false…
I’d rather have an HD remake in the future than a 3DS port. Unlike OOT or Majora’s Mask, Twilight Princess doesn’t seem like it’d fit well on a handheld (same issue I think I’d have with Xenoblade Chronicles 3D).
I need to hit up the E-Shop or something with my 3DS because last couple of months it has started to collect a lot of dust. I’m pretty much behind on what good titles are currently out for it now.
Don’t feel too bad. I haven’t even put a game card in my N3DSXL. All I’ve done is transfer data and download updates for games I have. I haven’t even played anything on it yet and I’ve had it since mid March. I street pass? That’s cool I guess lol.
I have xenoblade, majora and steam. Just haven’t opened any of them.
