Ninja Gaiden 3:Razor's Edge - Game out on 4/2 for PS3 and 360

Master Ninja difficulty is such an overpowered grab fest. Every enemy will try to grab you in the span of three seconds and it gets annoying fast. Add to that most of the “difficulty” comes from the fact that you literally have waves and waves of enemies and you’ll be getting bored fast. Boss battles are, for some extremely strange reason, are so much easier than the sections where you actually have to fight basic enemies. Like, easier than Izuna dropping Genshin spamming. The controls don’t feel tight as the previous games and it’s annoying dying to a grab you saw coming (cause it’s mostly telegraphed with an extremely bright red glow on the enemy hands) because Ryu didn’t slide as fast as I think he should have.

Multiplayer matches are actually fun. I’m more disappointing in the trials. Sigma 2 got that right - being able to play main characters instead of your customize-able ninja. When your partner dies it’s hard to sometimes find him so you have to use your ninja sense - which means you have to stand still without performing an action - like blocking - to get a point in the right direction where he’s at. There’s no red circle around his body or button prompt when you’re close enough to let you know you’re nearby. And with the sword as the only weapon and dark void as the only ninpo, Ninja Trails is a complete let down for me.

Is that to say that I’d be better off playing this on normal difficulty as opposed to hard? I’ve beat NG1 and NG2 on default difficulty and liked them that way, difficulty was just right. Which difficulty would you recommend for 3?

Probably Normal if you played NGB on Easy or NG2 on Acolyte.

I beat the game on normal this weekend. It’s an ok game, definitely not as good as NG1, NGB, or NG2, that’s for sure. Many of the gripes about it are legitimate; the lack of weapons, lack of items or orbs, the apparently random requirements to execute an UT, the rope walking, the lower difficulty, Ryu’s “humanization”, etc.

There were a few things that really irked me tho, and one of them was the absence of life bars for the bosses, and the enemies verbally taunting me or begging for their lives in the middle of an intense fight.

Reading some of the reviews out there tho, I think giving the game a 3 out of 10 is extremely harsh. To me a 3 out of 10 is an absolutely terrible and miserable game, borderline unplayable, which this game is certainly not. I think a more fair score would be a 6 out of 10 or so. I still had fun with it, which in the end, is the point of any video game. It’s just not nearly as good as its predecessors. I never did beat NGB, so maybe I’ll go back to play that one to get the old feeling back, but I’m still glad I played 3.

I dunno man…I couldn’t go over 5/10…the MP/Trials slightly save it, but goddamn the story was so fucking bad. One of the worst action game campaigns I’ve played honestly. The game is playable, but compared to NGB/NG2, it’s clear that Hayashi has no sense of momentum or pacing. Every time the game starts to pick up in tempo, here comes Ryu’s AIDS flaring up, and you’re hacking enemies in one hit while the camera and controls become locked into stupidity. Compared to *any *action game, I could see players just scratching their heads at the sheer nonsense of it all. I take back what I said about the game not having any monumentally stupid shit…between the constant taunting into bitching of the enemies, the horrific run towards the camera chase scenes, and every QTE just repeating the same way…there’s nothing memorable about the campaign at all, even when Hayashi is badly retreading locales from NG2…disappointing for an action game, unforgivable as a Ninja Gaiden title, even in trying to make itself it’s own game. Don’t spend $60 bucks on this. Let it tank and pick it up when the price drops so you can access the MP/Trials for free. It shouldn’t take very long.

I cant even recommend the online. Spent 20 minutes waiting to connect to one trials room just to get disconnected. Rinse and repeat.

Online vs is no fun, especially if you are a low level and have no moves or way to recover.

Duke Nukem Forever with a ninja mask.

NO ONE REPLY TO THIS THREAD ANY LONGER. LET THIS THREAD AND GAME DIE!

(j/k y’all can keep shitting on it if y’all want to)

I prefer this Ninja Gaiden III.

lmao just saw Destructoid’s and IGN’s review, damn

Alarm bells were ringing for me when I heard they removed decaps.

Has Itagaki weighed in his views?? It’s a shame the game is a complete joke, I’m really worried how DOA will turn out :frowning:

Ninja Edit: Struggling to find any info on multiplayer, has anyone tried it???

Can’t wait to hear Itagaki’s take on it, and to hear Hayashi’s ridiculous defense to the game’s criticism. “Players don’t want to see a Ninja using a wide variety of weapons anymore”
:arazz:

TLDR Review of Ninja Gaiden 3:

I DO NOT UNDERSTAND

Japanese gamer destroys his NG3 CE in a fit of rage.

Rented the game. Enjoyed it as a rental. Glad I didn’t buy. I’m done.

Why in the FUCK did I sell my copy of the snes collection. Now it’s like $100+

Too bad Trilogy version is like Sigma, a mediocre port of better games. It’s hard as hell to find anymore, but it’s sloppy as hell compared to the OG NES versions. Poorly redone music, sloppier controls, bunch of visual effects for the backgrounds missing, mistranslated text…You can still unlock Trilogy on the OG Ninja Gaiden on XBox, just find them 50 Scarabs and shoot the clock tower face!

How could they mistranslate on the snes collection? Why not just copy from the nes one? I believe there’s a beta Ninja Gaiden 1 nes out there too. I think I read on unseen64.net once it was like a review copy or something?

hey guys im just gonna post my thoughts on NG3 that i put on a facebook group that im a part of. I kind of explain the good parts of the combo system. liking the story is an opinion thing as i think it is well done compared to the lack of story/character development of the previous ones so here ya go:
sorry for sucha long post but here ya go NG3 review: Okay man heres my review of Ninja gaiden 3. Ive had enough time with it along with the other ninja gaidens to give you an honest opinion from a reliable source. I have beaten Ninja gaiden, Ninjaiden black, Ninja gaiden 2 all on Master Ninja difficulty. I have literally raped these games because of my obsession with difficult tasks, half the reason my execution isnt that bad in fighting games. SO here we go, PROS: AMAZING action, the game is ALWAYS throwing something outrageous at you and when you tear them to pieces you honestly feel like a mystical super ninja. Why would anyone give this game a terrible score when it really has the core concept down packed. Super. Ninja. Action. Hardcore. Its there and anyone that says otherwise are going by hearsay and just riding the mainstream’s dick of bashing this game. Another PRO is the combo system. although there is only the sword right now (dlc weapons in april for FREE) the things you can do with that sword are near infinite. Theres a difference in this engine in that you cant always DASH cancel your sword attacks, which means you have to cancel sword attacks into shuriken which can be dash canceled to CHASE down the evading opponent. considering that even IF you hit the opponent they can still avoid your combo (on harder difficulties for the most part) this is an extremely important yet difficult skill to apply, ALREADY giving the games combo system depth. What else gives it depth? Steel to Bone techniques. you will satisfyingly cut through an enemy with your sword with a QTE, but it isnt GOW style. there are actually two outcomes, pressing the QTE will end steel to bone, however mashing the attack button will allow you to instantly steel to bone the next person within sword range. This means if youre facing a big ass baddie and there are soldiers and youre godlike enough, you can steeltobone a soldier INTO the big baddie for an instant, clean kill. This is important as most grabs will 80-90% damage on Master Ninja difficulty. this combined with the Obliteration techniques from 2, and the fact that flying swallow can cause a kill animation is huge. I wont even go into the brink of death features in which you can only do OT or they bleed out. this just adds another layer of depth in the art of building meter. You can only do ninpo in this game by building meter in battle, best way is to izuna drop and then obliterate, but this is difficult on some of the mutants as youll generally not get much meter since theyre so hard to kill. ninpo does regen life and clear the screen but it does NOT mean you can just use it as insta win button. the waves keep coming after you clear the screen and usually the next enemies are tougher than the last, meaning you shouldve saved your meter instead of wasting it like a dumbass. Ultimate techniques are also more indepth as it isnt just a chargeable move that hurts alot. It teleports and insta kills enemies based on how strong your sword is. EX: first sword will give you 3 kills, however if theres a big enemy itll take two swipes to kill them, therefore meaning you could kill a big enemy and ONE humanoid, OR three enemy humanoids total. ALSO you can do SOOOO many combos into charge for UT it just becomes so complicated, im still researching what is the most efficient way to kill assassins and alchemists, as i have trouble with them. the bow mechanic is also extremely useful as youll eventually get explosive tip. ALL of these tools (Sword, Shuriken, dash cancels, air bow tech, run away, off the wall, ninpo, OT, UT, SteelToBone) ALL of this is essential to beat this game on a challenging difficulty. So now that ive settled the positives of the engine itself here are some other PROS: The animation. it looks fucking. beautiful. its so satisfying to cut a man down with steel to bone, and addicting at thata!, diving off a tower and flying swallowing the unsuspecting soldier is also a wonder to behold. You RALLY do feel like a fucking ninja like a said before in this game. graphics, animations, textures, theyre all top notch, dont let IGN tell you its barely a step above NG2 when you know thats a fucking lie just by watching a damn trailer. Another PRO is Story. this is just my opinion but i found it captivating. the character of ryu is made relatable, by making you feel like youre really a fucking mass murderer (which you are) and it hit me right in the feels when i struck down a man begging for his life. This pushes you to understand the hardships of a ninja, who is considered dirty and sneaky and evil by the society, who is fighting for justice and the greater good. Add some cool characters, some sick plot twists, and actual character development and you have NG3. what the fuck are people complaining about? do you WANT the mindless action of NG2 back? or do you WANT the series to evolve and actually be legit in all categories. because NG2 was an action game through and through, lacking story. this is action, WITH story, WITH innovation. I actually have more good to say about the game but fuck it ill go into the CONS: Weapons. You only get one, and like i said you can do alot with it, but i admit i miss the versatility of multiple styles in NG2, it allowed me to fight better, but honestly NG3 probably made me godlike with the sword, so i cant imagine whatll happen if they GIVE me more weapons. CON:Ryu’s character, now i know i said i like the character dev but there is ONE thing i dont like about it. Ryu has become fallible. in every game he is known to make no mistakes, to be a cold calcullated super ninja, that not even the greatest, mightiest fiends could phase. He would look at his greatest enemy without blinking and then proceed to tear it apart with the dragon sword. Now however he has doubts, he is confused, he doesnt always have the answer. this is only something i DISLIKE and not necessarily something bad, since a good hero cannot be perfect. I just miss perfect Ryu.CON: difficulty, now THIS could be a pro and a con, because they made NG3 easier AND harder at the same time. Normal and easy difficulty is extremely accessible while hard is fairly difficult and MN is damn near impossible. Keep in mind i have destroyed NG games so its not like im talking out of my ass i KNOW what difficulty is, and NG3 MN has me stuck on day 5. I beat the game on hard the first day. I know, im godlike. CPM: uhhh the enemies saying “ninja” alot? idk the sound was good to me but people complained about that so i put it here just shits and gigs> if you think theres anything else< post it and we can discuss and it to the cons< but im pretty sure i explained why NG3 is better than mediocre to a NG fan, and why it is NOT an abomination in the series.

In the name of Ares, do you know what a paragraph is?! Indentations man!

I wanted to stop reading as soon as said he the combo system has depth, ready to gouge my fucking eyes out with my Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword DS Stylus when he said the story was captivating and that the game is a positive evolution of the series. “Pushes you to understand the hardships of being a ninja” There’s a significant difference between intent and execution. Guess were NG3 falls flat on it’s face?

It’s his review and his opinion but…
You have got to be fucking kidding me.

Never bought the excuse that “People don’t want to see decapitations anymore” had any moral dilemma attached to it, it was simply the limitations of getting NG2 to run on Sigma 1’s engine, and I have a feeling the “Steel on Bone” technique is working under the same principle: they’re fast and abstract, but leave no visible damage to the enemies. No de-limbs, no massive blood spray coming from a logical source, my guess is this game is running on Sigma 1’s engine again, and it’s working within it’s limitations, again.

Even NG2 in it’s lowered 560p resolution looks more consistent than this. The visuals have the Sigma games richness in color, but NG2 pumps out the enemies and pyrotechnics with far more stability than this game.

With more experimentation, the combat is sort of a rip from Sega’s Shinobi reboot, the sword, like Akujiki, gets more potent as you successfully chain kills, and you will reach points where you’re instant killing enemies in succession, and other points where you can launch one UT after another. But it’s a button mash fast at it’s core, hence the “godlike” feeling of the sword combat. Was playing the Trials mode more in depth with my friend Big Al and we were just marveling at how ridiculous the combat has become.

Enemies can throw you out of Izuna drops.* You can be hit or thrown out of Izuna drops while you’re launching into the air*. If an enemy does a guard breaking attack while you’re comboing another enemy, you’ll take damage as you continue your combo. Most enemies have a 300 degree throw range. The targeting system is absolutely atrocious, any time you knockdown an enemy or put them in stun state, Ryu auto targets some other enemy ten feet away and flies towards him.

"this is action, WITH story, WITH Innovation"
Yeah, and if you never played God of War, Uncharted, Gears of War, Assassin’s Creed or pretty much any other popular game from this generation that NG3 is trying to steal badly from, I could see that.

but none of those games apply steeltobone, ultimate techniques, or ninpo the way NG3 does. the ng3 strat is so different from those i dont see what theyre stealing? you cant say QTE is stolen, because that shit isnt copyrighted. also auto target system is fine for me. i dont have a problem attacking who I want to attack when i want to attack them. and the whole thing with taking damage for continuing your combo is part of the difficulty. you CANT just do whatever you want, you have to know when to stop your combos and get the fuck out of dodge or risk getting grabbed for 80 percent life (on master ninja that is) you cant say my opinion is completely fucking ridiculous when everything i say is backed by reasons. Ive read reviews where the straight up didnt even list the features correctly or said somethings not there and it actually is. now THATS absolutely fucking ridiculous. but atleast i try to make my opinion an informed one and i believe i deserve respect for it.
