Most companies think the consumer is borderline retarded.
So they think everyone only buys there games at gamestop?
Yo, fuck this game and fuck you Hayashi. Besides ME3 this was the game I was most looking forward to this year, what a fucking tragedy.
/yesimmad
Sigma 1 & 2 suck? I’m going to need you to play those before you pass judgment sir.
Thing is, they are. See Call of Duty.
I have this game, played 15 mins of campaign. But hours of multiplayer. Multiplayer is fun.
edit: People on here calling themselves retarded? lmao.
Sigma 2 was so watered down in difficulty and they took out the best part, ToVs. ToVs on PotMN were effing hard as hell and challenging.
So…after playing for about 6 hours, 2 1/2 stages, and online…
The storyline is pretty awful. Just get it out of the way so I don’t have to talk about it much. Even compared to NGB and NG2’s plots, this just some bad writing, and the game has a disjointed way of going into a cinematic that has nothing to do with what you’re currently up to. The girl who’s guiding you is pretty much Captain Obvious, pointing out shit you’ve already passed, or marveling at Ryu’s abilities at opening a door, etc. They try to make Ryu a more sympathetic character, but it falls flat on it’s face…and the attempt at having Ryu suffer some moral conundrum about the massacre he just unleashed is rather amusing…in that in fails so badly. Here they crawl away begging for mercy. You’ll literally have a dude trying to fire a rocket up your ass, knock the launcher out of his hands, and he starts begging for his life. :wtf:. I would switch to Japanese language, but unfortunately the game only has English as voice options…
The quick time events are similar to Ninja Blade, but they’re not beating you death with them, and the timing is fairly loose. Hayashi indicated you can turn them off, and you can by turning off the in-game tutorials…but it doesn’t disable the QTEs…they just happen without the button prompts appearing, so you’ll have to memorize what they are.:shake: More problematic with the Story is the storytelling itself…you’ll be knee deep in enemies, Ryu’s arm flairs up and he’s limping around, the camera turns really slow…you’d think the enemies would jump at the opportunity to kill Ryu, but they just kind of stand around going “What’s wrong with him?” while you limp over and instant kill them. I have no idea what purpose these “events” serve, aside from breaking up the action in a total buzzkilling way…
The combat itself…that’s what we’re really here for anyway, is just different. Joshkaz mentioned that the game is basically auto-comboing, and that was the impression I got initially, but once I started doing the Ninja Trials and online co-op, where the combat is unbroken by cinematics and QTEs, I liked it much more. The sword has an extremely deep moveset, even surpassing the TDS, so you can mash the shit out of XXXXX combos if you like and get results, or go much much deeper and pull off some pretty cool shit. The Slide mechanic replacing the NG2’s dash covers a lot of ground, and it trips the enemies when you slide into them, so you can use it to extend combos. Furious Wind technique is still in play, counterattacks work relatively the same…the basic combat is still pretty entertaining. UTs and Ninpo are relegated to last resort type stuff, so the focus becomes the OTs(Metal on Bone yada yada yada), and you have a Ki meter that fills, and as it fills your damage increases. You can fire off a UT if you like, or you can wade into the enemies and OT them one after another. It’s not a bad combat system, to be honest, it’s just different than Itagaki’s. It suffers in the Story because it’s broken up by odd event sequencing, but I was having a good time in the Ninja Trials mode. It’s a decently free form combo system, and it’s fun to explore so far.
The Ninja Trials were fun, easily the most entertaining aspect of the game so far, and the co-op ran pretty smooth. The trials are made of stages from NGB and NG2 and had a pretty wide variety of enemies. You level up and unlock abilities as you go and rather than forcing you to team up with terrible AI like Sigma 2’s mission mode, you can go it alone for more karma points and faster level ups. It’s no Soul Calibur in terms of character customization…and beware…the game has a online pass, so renting to try out the online isn’t a free option. Didn’t get a chance to try out the Deathmatch type modes…but the missions are a shit ton more entertaining than NG2’s missions.
SP is definitely a disjointed mess, but the combat isn’t a total loss when the game just goes with it. The game doesn’t make the same mistake as Sigma 2 in having 4 enemies on screen with massive health, and there hasn’t been any monumentally stupid shit like fighting the Statue of Liberty so far. It’s a different game, and has to be approached that way. After the 1st stage(which will likely leave a bad impression), I gave up on mourning the loss of Itagaki’s influence and just played. It’s still a fundamentally decent action game, just too much shit added in outside of the combat in an unfocused way. Seems like the harder difficulties will provide a decent challenge, and I’m not ready to give up on it just yet. Lack of weapons is disappointing, but if the DLC weapons have a moveset on the scale of the sword, the MP might be fun for a while…
Ninja Gaiden (2004) is a masterpiece, in my mind this game has no sequels.
Yo how big is the Ninja Trials? Is it anywhere near as big as Ninja Gaiden Black’s?
Half the reason NGB was soooo fuuucking gooood was the added Mission Mode. If NG3s is at least on par with Blacks Mission Mode then it would be worth getting at 30 bucks.
So far, unlocked 10 Acolyte missions when I beat the first stage, unlocked 10 Mentor missions when I cleared 5 of them.
Probably around 40 missions if the only other difficulties are Master Ninja/Ultimate Ninja. Acolyte missions were face numerous normal enemies, Mentor were tougher enemies with boss appearances. They’re done more like Black’s missions, none of the green essence for increased Karma bullshit, way more fun than NG2’s MM. You can beat them solo or co-op and it tracks your highest score, and the leveling up system gives you a reason to go back and try them again. I was digging it. You can set up a lobby and play the missions while waiting for someone to join. Hopefully they’ll have some Eternal Legends type stuff on the back end, but this has been the bright spot of the game so far.
Thanks for posting that Zero, well spoken. I won’t be able to play it until the weekend, but I figured it would be different, and not necessarily a shitty game.
Whether they were good or not doesn’t say much about the team since they were basically just porting Itagaki’s team’s games.
don’t speak so soon.
this game is probably gonna sell like cake.
wait till the casual kiddies pick it up and spread the word that its “playable”
it’ll probably be the biggest selling NG in the whole series! by far!
then the developers will think they’re actually heading in the “right” direction…thanks to all of the profits they’ll see from the casualizing of the series.
facepalm
I ended up purchasing my CE preorder but can’t decide whether to open it or not. With my store credit I only paid 40 dollars. Thoughts?

It’s okay guys, this is the DMC2 of the franchise. The next game will be the best entry in the series! That or, Sigma 3 will be announced soon.
Finished the game today, single player is forgettable. Ninja Trials is where its at, havent touched MP deathmatch yet. Not a bad game but not great either, not worth the full price imo.
Mizuki would get it.
Just started playing it you guys started on hard lol. It’s not as bad as everything was making it seem. Zero pretty much hit everything on the head. I am glad that i switched my preorder to the regular version. Imma just go in over the weekend with it.
It’s just weird…been switching back and forth between Normal and Hard mode on Story. Normal is pretty brain dead as far as challenge goes, Hard is tougher just because of the sheer enemy density. I hate to say they drag out many of the fights to the point where it’s tedious, but when you’re facing 50+ enemies every shot:rolleyes: …The further I get into Hard the more Sigma 2-esque the enemies become. There’s some Assassin’s Creed looking dudes in black trenchcoats that take the role of NGB’s Black Spider Ninjas and just take an eternity to get rid of…the Day 3 Dino Boss fight on hard dragged on for so long I thought I was doing it wrong. I’m used to harder difficulties having shit that can kill you in a flash, but with Itagaki it’s “make the enemies kill you faster”. With Hayashi it’s “make the enemies kill you faster while making it seem your sword has turned into a plastic baseball bat”. If he’s trying to attract new fans, recalling the most annoying NG2 enemies hardly seems the way the way to go about it. Add in QTE’s and all the other stuff, I don’t see players who shied away from NGB and NG2 seeing this one as the casual rebirth for the series that they’ll suddenly enjoy.
It’s just odd…there’s more rocket/projectile spam in the 1st 3 stages than the entirety of NG2… by stage 3 it’s a heavy dose of Ninja Dogs/Gun Ninjas and Rocket Ninjas, and the Rocket Ninjas with the multi-launchers are all over the game so far.
Did try the VS. MP for a while, and I have to admit, it’s pretty damn fun. The combat system works extremely well in this respect. You can Falcon Dive players from high above, counterattacks work the same as SP, you can slide into players to break their blocks, shurikens autotrack players trying to do sneak kills and the shurikens stun your opponents briefly. I figured Izuna drops would be overpowered, but it’s hard to launch players with the usual XY starters. The more complex Izuna’s(like XXXXYXXXY) still work, but it’s harder to get through the full combos with 4 ninja attacking you.
The only thing I didn’t care for in VS. MP was Ninpo. It’s NG2’s Piercing Void and it has to be aimed manually, but it travels through solid objects, and if you’re attacking someone and they activate it, it’s instant death. The stages are small, so you’ll find yourself getting hammered by random ass ninpos alot as players send them across the stage, but when you get into a fierce 1 on 1 fight, it’s pretty damn satisfying. The MP does seem to have a lot of potential if Team Ninja expands on it…properly. There’s only 3 stages, but 2 more are being added for free when the new weapons drop. More weapon variety could make it interesting.
I will say one positive thing about this game, I like how getting stronger and “leveling up” I guess was done organically, without menus and shit. Getting a new sword and finding out light x4, heavy now works and gives you a whole new badass combo actually felt good to me. However it woulda been nice to have other weapons to play with. Game was short as shit anyway so whatever.
I won’t touch on the bad, you guys took care of that well enough. That was so goddamn easy, fuck. I’m not all that mad, I didn’t pay for it lol. Y’all need to get on that Gamefly mess, seriously. Your stress level over games being bad will decrease dramatically.
