New Sticky Rules - Effective 8/2/09

We are now changing the rules on what events and tournaments qualify for a sticky. In addition, Calipower is now modding this forum and make sure the riff raff stays out.

For the purpose of clarification, an Event is a group of tournaments at the same location, a Tournament is a single tournament by itself or within an Event.

Q: Why have the rules changed?
A: Due to the resurgence of the tournament scene on SRK and the sheer amount of stickies that exist from week to week, there has been a growing need to change the way the Tournaments & Events forum handles stickies.

Q: So now what qualifies for a sticky?
A: There are three types of events that we will consider for a sticky. Majors, events that have more than $1000 in cash prizes in a single tournament, and unique tournaments/events.

Q: What the hell is a unique tournament/event?
A: The way we qualify unique tournaments/events is a tournament/event that has an extra incentive. Incentives include non-monetary prizes such as televisions, game systems, plane tickets, etc. These incentives would be heaped on top of the total cash prize.

Q: Who determines what the major tournaments are?
A: All Evo events are considered majors. Part of the criteria include, but are not limited to, are the seniority of the Event (events with the most years behind it), the area in which the Event is located and date. Any other tournaments under consideration will be decided by myself and Calipower and if needed, the rest of SRK staff.

Q: I have an Event that will pay out over $1k in total prizes. Will my tournament be under consideration for a sticky?
A: Not necessarily. Keep in mind that a single tournament (e.g. the SF4 tournament) needs to dish out $1000 in total prizes in order to be stickied.

Q: I have an Event that has a lot of people. But I can’t guarantee that $1000 will be paid out!
A: Send a PM to Calipower or myself stating your case.

Q: I have an Event that will include goodies like an Xbox 360 and a Playstation 3 as part of the prizes. Will my Event get a sticky?
A: We will suggest sending a PM to Calipower or myself stating your incentives and we will decide.

Q: With these new rules, my small tournament no longer gets exposure!
A: That’s not necessarily true. When you make a post advertising your event, you are exposing it to everyone who is interested in an Event. It is ultimately up to the tournament organizers to plan such an Event so people will clamor for more. We want the scene to grow more than anyone (because in the end it helps EVO numbers :lovin:) so we want to encourage Event Organizers to be a bit creative in order to bring people to tournaments.

Q: What are the sticky times?
A: Major - 2 months. Rest is TBD.

I don’t really agree with this new system. So now we need to give out mad money and prizes just for stickies? I’ve ben running tournaments for 3 years now and all of a sudden my thread gets unstickied because it’s not an Evo event? Come on man, where’s the community support? You can’t honestly expect tournament turnouts to not be affected by this. Every tournament thread with a new post is going to send more and more events to page two, where no one will see them. Was there really anything wrong with the old system?

I’m all for bringing new and exciting things to tournaments, but to stop putting upcoming events at the top of the board because they’re not giving out $1k is kinda stupid.

As a tournament organizer, the community support starts with you good sir.
It’s your responsibility to update your event on a daily/weekly basis. The EVO/Majors(MWC,FR,T-series,etc.) tournaments set the standard on how to execute a successful event with the greatest benefit given to their respective communities.

Next, there’s too many shady events this year and it’s time to clean house. Not saying it was you, but many of them were stickied.

Last, I’m all for new and exciting things too =) we all are. That’s why we have our unique rule. I know the community is creative:

CTF had a tournament where Sanford won a plane ticket to go to EVO2K9. As a result, he was crowned this years MVC2 World champion and placed top 8 in SF4.

If I may, I fear this may bring more people trying to scam the community with gilded tournament promises just to get a sticky, and thus, get more prominent exposure over legit events.

That’s just my .02

That’s why I’m here :china:

I’ve been to many events and know the symptoms of a shady tournament. Most of them are geared towards venue fees, % of entrees to supplement cash/incentive bonus, or lack of information.

If the rules/format is black and white, then it’s the players’ choice whether if its worth their time.

I actually think its a little hard but understandable none the less

We have ran 5 events in Indianapolis and we’ve began picking up both in number of players and quality of events. However, we cannot currently say we reach the $1000 mark for payouts in any one game. Obviously you don’t need a sticky for some tourney being held in Joey’s basement consisting of 16 people but an event slowly gradually reaching the 100 person mark a sticky seems relevant. Also, there are no other events in Indy and few events in the Midwest in general so things like location and consistency of events, not just the amount of money involved should be considered.

Basically we expect the same 5 events to be sticky’d every year regardless.

What I can see happening, is people just spam the threads more as bumps.

Maybe keep the one week stickies for everything else of sufficient size? I think the $1,000 limit is too high. Maybe make it 32 entrants in one tourney?

Let me quote one of the answers:

Yes, location does count. For example, A tournament in the Midwest that would anticipate about 50 people would hold more weight than a similar tournament in Southern California. We’re obviously in a midst of a change that will benefit all players. Things may have to be ironed out a bit, but we’ll work that out based on opinions, feedback and personal experience.

I agree with the fact that threads are just going to be spammed for bumping purposes. What I propose is this:

Assuming this forum script supports both Stickies and Announcement type threads, we have major tournaments as announcements this way they appear above all others on the board. Smaller tournaments get stickies, so they appear under the majors but still above the others. A local tournament that pulls in 40-50+ every time is still something of merit.

All tournaments have some kind of spam already :bgrin:
I’m keeping a close eye on which tournaments have quality updates, feedback and turnout reports.

Announcements(major)/Sticky(small event) method would just confuse people and still raise questions for those events in between.

Local events that pull 40-50 people are great!
Let me requote Javi:

"Yes, location does count. For example, A tournament in the Midwest that would anticipate about 50 people would hold more weight than a similar tournament in Southern California. what do you think about having a sticky thread or a sub-forum in the Regional Forums for the regional tourneys?

example would be:
when you go into the Midwest: Discussion & Matchmaking , there could be a sticky thread labeled “Tournaments & Events”, have the thread locked, and whoever can edit it can post the links from this “Tournament & Events” forum into the locked thread

or

have a sub-forum within each regional forum, where we can post away with new events just like we do in here

Posting an event here is where you’ll get maximum exposure. Organizers are looking for out of town players ontop of local support to expand their communities.

Jumping around from one matchmaking forum to another would be inefficient.

ya i guess that is true, didnt think of it that way.

Good shit guys. Everything was getting a fucking Sticky before. That was cool when there were no tournaments. Not so cool now.

If everything gets a sticky… really nothing gets a sticky.

Organizers, step your shit up.

And please stop putting “MAJOR” in your thread titles… If it’s major, we already know.

This is crucial.

I’ve seen a lot of proggression in my region this year, and would hate to see it go to waste.

I see I neglected to read all of it.

I agree with Johnny. Also what about consistent tournaments, ranbats, etc?

also I have a question about this point

'Q: I have an Event that has a lot of people. But I can’t guarantee that $1000 will be paid out!
A: Send a PM to Calipower or myself stating your case.

Q: I have an Event that will include goodies like an Xbox 360 and a Playstation 3 as part of the prizes. Will my Event get a sticky?
A: We will suggest sending a PM to Calipower or myself stating your incentives and we will decide.’

So that means basically it’s on you guys to determine what would be a major or not? I ask this because I’m fairly new on the tourney scene, but I do throw consistent events across multiple genres. So theoretically if I(a lesser known organizer) happened to land an extremely large venue and post up, there’s a chance it won’t get labeled as a major because it’s up to the sole discretion of the moderators and not because it is missing certain criteria?

I just want to be sure.

otherwise yeah i mean it’s understandable about the rule changes because of potential scams. Maybe implement a profile feature that lists who is an organizer and allows feed back from players, that way you can determine scammers too? i’m half asleep at work so it’s a crazy idea.

Just because it’s stickied doesn’t automatically mean it’s a major. It’ll be nice to have it where the first page isn’t full of stickies again.

Yes we determine if you fit the criteria.

3 rules -" You MUST send a PM to be considered"

  1. Majors/Large number events on the come up (Ex. 50+ people tourney in Alaska >>50+ people person in California)
  2. Big Cash Prizes (1K could be accumulated in ONE tourney, in other words pot+bonus = 1K is ok)
  3. Unique (Consoles, TV’s, plane ticket, or other creative ideas)
