Easiest solution that would please almost everyone -> a decent port. That is, the DC version of ST running on a PS4/XBOX.
Difficult part -> get capcom involved. Whoever achieves that gets the golden egg and solves the problem for once and for all. Period
Ain’t going to happen. DC sticks are difficult to source, and disks and memory card settings would take forever to get down right at a tourney.
Capcom is largely unreliable.
This is partly why the Undamned superguns came about. We needed a way to play arcade ST while using modern controllers but without needing to haul giant, expensive, cabs everywhere.
Yup, they do. Though I hear reports that some people have issues trying to get them to work with Dreamcast. Something about having to always unplug and replug the buttons, force it into DC mode, as well as random disconnects. Not sure if there was a fix put out for that.
Even then, not everyone’s going to mod their stick just for DC, especially now that Undamned Superguns are pretty much the standard at Evo for the moment.
Not really that hard to set up… unless it is frowned upon to use Toodles super disk. English ST, easy to transfer game save, auto load the correct rom-set, etc. Shit, even the Marvel 2 guys could use the same setup too. Totally agree that using the UD-CPS2 setups makes the most sense since though since they work with everyones PS3/XB360 sticks… that and absolutely no one can bitch about it not being arcade perfect.
All good points. But this part right here could be a problem. Capcom might has issues with official tournaments at major tournaments using hacked versions of their games. It’s not an issue for smaller sessions or weeklies, but problematic the bigger up you go. It’s the same reason why we can’t use emulated ST at majors too.
Ah. Well in that case, Capcom is still unreliable. As has always been the case, the community has learned to fend for itself, rather than depend on the parent company. It’s quite shocking that Capcom has lasted this long while completely ignoring its fan base for the better half of its existence.
True, I wasn’t exposing the solution for its likeliness to happen but for being the definitive solution to the problem. However, as difficult as it is to get capcom involved, someone managed to convince them to get “involved” in hdr few years ago.
So in the end, I don’t really see it as an impossible solution. In fact it doesn’t involve as much work since it’s all about porting an existing version with no changes but with the craftsmanship to make it right in the new platform.
or, once Capcom goes bankrupt, buy the ST copyrights for 10 bucks, and make it available for everything, ps3, ps4, xb. xb1, smartphones, steam, then profit
After all this time, and through various ports, you’d think Capcom would have learned by now. All we want is a port of ST that’s as close to arcade ST as possible, has a decent training mode, and BONUS good online.
Nope, they gotta reinvent the wheel by giving the game to an idiot who tried to sell the game as a ‘community update’ instead of calling it what it really was: ST: Sirlin Edition.
This. Be a ST snob if you have to, but you can’t deny HDR was a critical success for Capcom (broke XBL and PSN sales records). Had the game had the full backing of Capcom and Sirlin got the resources he needed, we may have had a perfect ST port embedded in HDR (original backgrounds to go with the original sprites) and a stable release between both the XB360 and the PS3.
That’s not nice. I’ll never understand the hard-on of hate towards Sirlin and what he’s done for the SF2 community.
Thought this thread was about a new rebalance of ST, rather than a pointless debate about why HDR isn’t the standard? Anyways that has been answered many times and thoroughly. Blame Capcom for not releasing it in Japan, no arcade release. Just like many old games the strongest scene for it is in Japan, where many play it as their main game not just a side one.
Anyways another rebalance will never happen. What would be cool would be releasing a new game in the SF2 series. A natural continuation from ST (like ST was a continuation of SSF2-SF2T-SF2CE-SF2WW). I think this could be financially successful if done right, and keep the SF2 spirit going long in the future.
That’s very interesting. Never seen those gifs before. Blame the lame art on lack of funding and poor art outsourcing. I remember Sirlin said that he deeply regretted not getting the sprites as detailed as they were first promised.
