The block button is just part of MK’s personality. No different than how it’s part of VF’s or SC’s. Telling MK to get rid of the block button would be like telling Street Fighter to stop using a six button layout.
good readiness
Its not SF so why do you expect it to play like SF?
Block button = MK.

I really wanna get a UMK3 stick made up. I even have something to use as a case. However, I really need to know how many buttons this game is going to use.
I’m guessing I would set it up like this:
--------Lead Punch-----Rear Punch
-------------------Block
--------Lead Kick---------Rear Kick
Throw
I’m confuzzled.

it was ++118 or ++119 I believe. It goes a good long while without the select screen glitch, but it still happens from time to time. Glad you checked them out.
I did record 2 hours worth on the video camera, and then we restarded and recorded over probably half the the first 2 hours, but I will go through and see what we got.
I already have people working on it.
UMK3 uses 6 buttons:
- HP – HK
- – BL –
- LP – LK
R
(H = High, P = Punch, K = Kick, BL = Block, L = Low, R = Run)
MK9 will just use/need 5 like MK1 & MK2 & BLOODSTORM!11 (unless Boon & co. throw a wrench our way and mess around with the controls, but I doubt it)
FP – FK
– BL –
RP – RK
(F = Front, R = Rear/Back)
Who knows how it’s be set on the pads (it’ll be reconfigurable anyway), but because current pads have 3 more buttons and even more, they’re gonna set up macros to throw and probably some other things. But otherwise, you throw by Forward+Low Punch when next/close to your opponent (I reckon it’ll be the same in MK9).
On a side note, looks like Reptile has both his fast and slow forceball (at least it looked like it to me), maybe the “EX” (argh, don’t know what else to call it) forceball in the video is the slow one. Also, maybe complete invisibility can’t be achieved without use of the “Super” bar. Just a thought, wouldn’t have a way of knowing.
People who don’t want a block button in MK make me laugh. It’s like saying I don’t want throws in SF.
MK9 is looking very nice. Hopefully the game will be good so we can play it at tournaments.
I really hope there isn’t a throw button. I’d rather press Toward and a punch button.
I hope they keep it FP/RP/FK/RK/B then maybe one extra button for T(ag) and that’s it. However, I can’t be sure so I won’t get the stick made up.
I just want the Mortal Kombat & Mortal Kombat II control scheme back. That’s it. No run, no throw, no tag. I was already irked when it changed from High Punch/Low Punch to Front Punch/Back Punch but that is forgivable since a lot of moves in the past were pretty useless. Although I would imagine each character actually having unique normals now would have fleshed this out anyway.
They’ll probably just combine buttons. MK vs. DC used Tekken style of hitting two buttons at once. It’ll probably be either that or forward+punch here. Same for tag which will probably be two buttons at once. I don’t expect it to be more than a 5 button game.
Now that I’ve seen it in action, it looks pretty decent. I’m not into MK just like I’m not into Guilty Gear or 3D fighters, but it looks solid enough, and the more fighters the better. Maybe new players will get into it and then search for other fighters with automatic combos and try out MVC2 or Real Bout.

jonny cages x-ray super combo looks like a counter move, i hope he can combo into it or has another offensive one
it’s not like any other 2D fighter, that’s the problem
completely different matter, i’m not asking to remove the guard option, lol who wants that!? but mk is making this more difficult and adding nothing to the gameplay assigning block/throw buttons just for the sake of being different
Seriously, just go back and read pages 14 & 15. Nothing new is going to be said.
So becuase it’s 2D it automatically has to have no block button? Why do 3D games get the benefit of being allowed to diversify if they want to use a block button (Vf, SC) or hold back (TK)?
I dunno as far as I can tell dude is pretty much right that it adds nothing to the gameplay in MK. There’s a good chance there’s something I’m missing in which case I’d be glad to be informed of what that is, but the only thing I’ve seen people say so far is that it means you don’t have to have proximity blocking which is silly because there’s no reason holding back to block necessarily means you must have proximity blocking.
edit: VVVVVVV ok there we go
 IOW: cry moar
MK doesn’t have a block button for the “sake of being different.” Also, the throw “button” is a macro. They said they’d add a macro for tag and for X-ray attacks IIRC. As stated earlier, this game only actually needs 5 buttons, 4 attack buttons and block.
Thanks, I’m gonna get it made up as soon as…
