Part 1: the roster
So some fun things me and my friends thought about
26 characters:
1.Kung lao
2.Jonny Cage
3.Scorpion
4.Sub Zero
5.Reptile
6.Night wolf
7.Meelina
8.Sektor
The initial 8 we absolutely 100% know are in because they were shown to be in game fully.
9.Liu kang
10.Kitana
11.Raiden
12.Kano
13.Sonya
14.Cyrax
6 characters who are extremely likely to make it. Liu kang is a poster boy, mileena sans kitana seems unlikely, raiden is in the intro and features heavily in the story, Kano is one of the original cast members as is sonya and both may already have models thanks to the arena, and Cyrax goes with sektor.
15.Barraka
16. Jax
17. Shang tsung
These 3 are the only playable characters left not yet on the list to round out the roster between MK 1 and 2. While i think all 3 will make it i ordered it in most likely to least likely to make it as a playable character.
18.Jade
19.Young sub
20.Sindel
21.Stryker
22.Kabal
23.Sheeva
24.Robo Smoke
25.Ermac
26.Human smoke
These 9 would be the only characters required to round out and finish off the entire playable cast from mk1-umk3(this leaves out notably rain and noob saibot). This of course assumes that other than shang there will be no playable boss characters(shao khan, goro, etc)
However:
It has already been stated this is a back to the futureesque plot so there’s a lot of leeway with some characters not showing up, or showing up in different forms. It’s already been hinted at for another cyborg, and theres some other fun possibilites as well. Totally new characters may appear or characters who were one way before might be totally different.
The list me and my buddies got for those most likely to get the axe(in no order), and i’ll limit it to 5 since we managed passable reasons for large portions of the cast:
- Stryker: although i know he’s got like a cult following he’s not very story central and certainly not someone you immediately think of when you think MK.
- Sheeva: pretty much striker
- Smoke/robo smoke: already touched on seeing as how he’s basically a scorp clone. If he does return he will probably(hopefully) be quite different.
- Sindel: I seem to recall her returning being part of shao khans plot. This either makes her totally essential for the MK3 retelling, or if history changes enough totally useless.
- Jade: Similar to stryker and co.
(kabal dodges the top 5 simply because he’s pretty damn unique and was pretty damn broken on his intro)
As for possible new/variations of characters:
- Some form of robo sub zero(young one or noob)
- Human cyrax
- God knows what else.
Things i’m really hoping not to see:
- Blaze
2.mokap
3.meat
4.taven
- dagon.
I could make an argument for someone like quan chi getting a char slot, but so help me if any of those 5 appear this game better be competition quality because they’re wasting fan service slots.
Part 2: the gameplay.
My 1 giant insane concern right now is breakers. Everyone mentions GG as an example of a combo break system, and i’ve played GG quite a bit(never on a comp level) and i’ll go ahead and say it’s a WONDERFUL system there. I DO NOT TRUST MIDWAY TO GET IT RIGHT. I’m much more worried it’ll wind up like the original TvC where it’s the ONLY thing balancing infinites and instead they just get lazy on combo systems because “Oh well if they take too much damage they build 2 meters and break out!” I reallllly hope they don’t get sloppy because of this or that the EX/Skele moves don’t wind up a joke because everyone saves for breakers.
The silver lining: Mk isn’t serious. Mk isn’t competitive. This is generally the feeling for a lot of people and while maybe MK2 and more so UMK3 are great exceptions it doesn’t mean its likely to get taken seriously at first even IF it’s balanced. On the upside this means that i’d say MK is the one fighter right now that could easily get away with the dreaded “Balance Patch”. It’s easy to see why fighting communities hate these (If you play SSFIV just look at your mains “How can we make X better in the patch” topic to see why" but i think MK can get away with it since if it winds up broken, it’ll probably be VERY broken, and some form of patch would be seen as positive rather than screwing with already decent balance for the sake of those who complained loudly.
