I think it builds from all damage, given and taken. Don’t know if it builds at the same rate, though. But I notice that it doesn’t build from moves that don’t do any damage like Sub’s freeze nor does it build from throws. It’s hard to tell though since they were messing with the meter levels with some kind of cheat.
What I noticed of the X-RAY start-ups:
-Scorpion’s X-RAY starts as a teleport punch
-Sub-Zero’s X-RAY starts as a ground ice freeze where an ice spike shoots up
-Reptile’s X-RAY starts as a “green” dash
-Sektor’s X-RAY starts as a missle launch
-Johnny Cage’s X-RAY looks like a counter, where if you hit him during the animation, the X-RAY activiates
-Kung Lao’s X-RAY starts as a dash grab, similar to Reptile’s
-Nightwolf’s X-RAY starts with his double Axe’s, and he dashes in and hits you
-Mileena’s X-RAY looks like a grab of some sort
Also, after Kung Lao and Cage’s X-RAY were “finished” the opponent seemed to be in a dizzy mode and were able to be comboed.
Interesting…
Anyway , specials kept building the super gauge on hit or miss.
But don’t look at those stuff yet. Many things are subject to change (like in tag team health regeneration) and in this build super gauges kept getting filled automatically without a real reason.
We haven’t seen a cccc-combo breaker yet.
Now if we can just get some official SRK inspired MKIX avatars to represent the games that NEEDS to be back/put on the competitive feild…
…of course I’m talkin bout UMK3 and MKIX…
:woot: THEN WE’LL HAVE SOME PRETTY AWESOME THANGS TO LOOK FORWARD TO!!! :woot:
It’s the same as previous 3D MK’s.
Is it? Ok then.
Still not impressed.
lol @ some of you liking this more than MvC3
Well if a beaten-to-death Kung Lao ,
holding 2 halfs of Johnny Kage he just cut using his hat , doesn’t impress you , I don’t think anything else will.
But seriously , I don’t understand what the problem is . Different people have different tastes , don’t they?
And it’s too early to tell which game will be better , they will both come out in , like , next year . Of course MvC3 is defenitely more ‘expected’ to be a better game , but we shouldn’t jump into conclusions just yet.
Boom!
From the looks of it the meter follows the same rules as MK v DC. Meter is built through taking damage and using certain special moves.
isn’t the mk9 team populated by at least some of the people that made umk3? so in theory now that sf4 has shown them 2d gameplay can actually sell (you know that’s why this is happening now) maybe they’ll be able to get back in touch with their roots. maybe that will turn out to be laughably wishful thinking, but on the other hand mvc3 is made by a team whose track record is, uh, TvC
It’s nostalgia. Nostalgia is the only reason people still play UMK3. The same could be said for SF2 CE or KOF 97.
GODDAMNIT! Demo got me.
I was hoping to be ignorant about this one like I managed to be about MKvDC. Rent it and see if it sucks or not. But now I know this will, at best, be a day one buy. Lord help me if they come out with some limited edition. No. I’ll stay away from that at least. They really need to tone down those X-Ray moves though (in damage).
I’m hoping like you man. But the devil on my shoulder is kind of watching with an anticipation of how they’re going to fuck this up. You have to admit, the stuff they found to fail on the past few games was kind of creative. I mean, MOTOR KOMBAT? As much as they were hampered by time constraints, I still don’t trust them in general. But they’re hitting the nostalgic notes, so I’m going to at least rent it.
I hope they sharpen up their game by Spring 2011.
The funny (sad) thing is this will be the first time they can patch their game regularly since the arcade days. So that’s at least a hope if it comes out broken.
Saw the demo and it’s fucking awesome!
Looks amazing. MvC3 will get more hype, but after watching this, it’s a very strong competitor. So fluid and I love the combo’s. Tag team looks to work great.
Not a 100% sure about the X-ray thing, but looks cool anyways. The fatality’s are gruesome as hell. Love it.
And what’s with the lol @ people for liking this over MVC3 comment? A decent amount of people aren’t to happy with what they saw from it at E3…
I’m not sure if this has been linked here yet, but here’s an interview with Ed Boon from IGN regarding the new Mortal Kombat game:
In the interview, it mentions that, “…it (the super meter) builds whenever you do a special move, but it also builds when you take damage.”
Anyway, from what I’ve seen of the new Mortal Kombat, I have to say that I’m fairly impressed. I will definitely keep this game on my radar.
I have a bunch of things to say about this game as well as UMK3 discussion.
I play UMK3 at every tournament that hosts it. We were the first major to stream UMK3 at East Coast Throwdown 2 this year and both the crowd and stream received it well. The game is very fast, very brutal, yet remains very entertaining for the players. It’s a fucking adrenaline rush. All I ever see in streams (aside from the trolls hating like they do on every game that isn’t SF4) is “I didn’t know MK could be played like this”. So for those hating on MK just because you don’t know how it’s played and all you’ve seen of it is the latest pieces of garbage that were churned out, please sit down and let the people who are actually excited for this game have their time. IIRC, Street Fighter had some pretty shitty games in its day. Street Fighter EX ring a bell? How about Street Fighter The Movie on Saturn?
With that said, I’m really fucking pumped for this new game. When the trailer got released I was instantly excited, but still a little skeptical. We can obvious tell that there is no longer a run button (sadface), but a dash has been incorporated. The run button in MK3 and UMK3 increased the speed at which the game was played by 200%. No more turtling, no more bullshit. The even turned up the timer speed to ensure matches ran faster. We can, however, see that multiple characters have a teleport or a rush move. Nightwolf still has his shoulder move, Kung Lao still has his dive kicks, Scorpion still has his Teleport Punch, and Sektor still has his Teleport Uppercut. Reptile also has his dash elbow move. Will they all act the same as they did in UMK? Probably, but moves can be changed between now and release.
What I’m really surprised about was how FINISHED the game looks. Obviously there will be many changes between the E3 build and the final product, but as far as I can tell, the game’s engine is complete. Physics and speed can be adjusted, of course, but I’d say we have another 8-9 months until this baby is on shelves.
Right now we’re looking at 26 characters. I’d say that we have 4 new characters and 22 returning. They’ll probably take out both Robot Smoke and Human Smoke because let’s face it, RSmoke is Sektor + Scorpion, and HSmoke is a better Scorpion. Scorpion’s combos look like they’ve improved greatly and you can now land a spear after an anti-air teleport punch. The person playing didn’t go for that specific combo, but it can definitely be done. I really hope they put in Ermac. Maybe give him some more visuals on his move (like the Teleport Slam), but I’d really like to see him in there. Stryker and Sheeva will probably get cut as well.
I’m kind of upset that there is no planned arcade release. Then again, given the current state of arcades in the states and the fact that Japan would NEVER play this game, it’s understandable.
Rest assured that both MK9 and MvC3 will both be at East Coast Throwdown 3, ready for competition.
Well said Mr SweetJohnnyCage. Ever since MK started sucking I started playing Tekken for the last 15 years. But it never gave me the same satisfaction the 2D MK’s did. MAME is the greatest invention ever because even though I gave up hope on MK ever being good again, I still played them every once in awhile just because they’re the shit. Even MK1 simply for presentation. Even a fan of the first movie. Truth be told, I’ll take a “good enough” new 2D MK than a new Tekken. Real talk.
Anyway the amount of detail they’re putting in the presentation in this is game is sick. Anyone catch in the tag match whenever one of the characters dies, they get dropped in the Dead Pool? lulz Just simple stuff like that goes a long way. Someone at TRMK said Kahn’s Arena is awesome too because of the crowd cheering and Kahn taunts you the entire time.
The last couple weeks have been nuts as an MK fan. My head asploded about 15 times.
wow. That gameplay stream sold me. Looks wonderful!
