It’s not always about numbers. He may be negative, but that doesn’t always mean punishable. Ex tatsu can punish but you don’t have infinite meter and miss one frame and you could be whiffing up up to the sky. Meanwhile, he blows up crouch tech easily as well. The game is still anti-Gouken. But damn I still love playing.
Yo Gouken Community!
I’ve just created a guide to scoring 100% health-depleting combos with Gouken against ANY of the cast! With only a SINGLE reset, and barely any Ex-meter, Gouken can kill ANYBODY. Gouken’s got 3 reset’s to choose from, so pick your poison and go take out a T.Hawk or an Akuma at full health in one swoop! Enjoy!
cross up demon flip divekick setups? I know one of F-throw is to dash and then do HK demon flip but its char specific. Are there any other well known setups for it or are they more of a manually timed thing? It seems like option b to me.
backthrow, 2hit jmp, immediate lk.flip, last frame kick
that’s a crossup on some characters if they quickrise.
it’s my usual go to if i mess up and get the 2hitter when I didn’t mean to.
Good one, this is a criminally underused setup
If you know how to time the dive kick you can cross up from all cancellable normals.
You also get it off of all hard knock downs except GF Slide (well you can but it’s tricky).
And if you got big enough nuts you can use point blank ex flip to cross up.
sad part is, DWU takes away almost all of the auto pilot set ups, so you will need a manual and counter set up to compensate.
Who are Gouken’s bad matchups and who is a good secondary to cover them?
I have those big enough nuts your talking bout …

Who are Gouken’s bad matchups and who is a good secondary to cover them?
Really bad match ups (imo)
Yun, Cammy, Viper, Decapre, Bison, Rose, Abel, Blanka, Akuma
rest is either slight disadvantage, even or in his favor…
Good alternates are Yun (of course) and Ryu to take care of Yun…
Has anyone found an answer for DWU yet? This is the biggest lynch pin with sticking with this character for me…
Sad to say, but I am moving to Akuma, because without guaranteed set up timing Gouken has become completely obsolete in Ultra. Right now, this game seems to be way more about damage output (Yun, E.Ryu, Akuma), low risk wake up options (Rose, E.Ryu, Cammy, Adon, Akuma), unreactable overheads (Elena, Dudley, Cammy), unstoppable jump ins (Sakura, Adon, Cammy, Dudley) and strong footsies and neutral game. Also all the nonsense characters like Fuerte, Abel, Viper still beat Gouken free even with his buffs.
Anyone else moving on from the old man?
Lmao… Yes I found it BEFORE Ultra launched and it’s dirty!!!
I actually advised how to do it in several of these posts but people didn’t listen and kept complaining about DWU so I never posted the videos.
The other side of the coin is, I was hoping the patch would drop first before I put it out there.
Everything I tell you is 100% true.
I’ll never drop Gouken but I do have a few pocket characters for balancing sake.
wake up is sketchy for most the cast after knock down, it’s not that many who can cover normal and DWU at the same time.
Zangief can too. Lololololol
Sorry man, but it seems that you’re confused. Gouken has the same or higher damage output has the three you pointed out. What makes them their low risk wake up option, dp? You can punish that shit. Cammy doesnt have an overhead. Unstoppable jump ins??? What is ex tatsu for??? Neutral game and footsies!!! Read that again. When you start playing that game your whole gameplay will change my friend!!!
And yes there are setups already for both dwu and non dwu, I don’t have any problem with it.
It continues…
Akuma doesn’t have guaranteed setups anymore, either. If he did he wouldn’t be missing in everyone’s top 5 tier list. Its the worst version of Akuma in any SF4 game. If you want to benefit the most from USF4 then pick Yun or E. Ryu.
Drop him for Dan.
ok, so as for delayed wakeup…
I’ve found that manual command dive kick timing covers a lot of it. I have zero evidence to back this up, but I’m fairly certain that they increased the activation window. If not, then I’ve just been doing it so much that time dilates while I pick the right time to press that button.
Yeah, it’s active until it hits the ground. Same 4 frame landing.
I have to try using it with d+mk more, the only issue is when you hit up top it’s not enough hit stun
Poongko listed the Seth match as 6-4 in favor of Gouken. What am I missing? I’m afraid to throw fireballs because of his wall jump. He has mixups that can avoid EX parry. He can safe-jump EX tatsu on wake-up. He can throw fireballs to match yours. The only thing I think Gouken has going for him is good damage, but I feel he loses strictly based on tools.
Thoughts?
Damage, EX Tatsu, Seth’s Wall jump has been nerfed while Gouken can still flip on his booms.
Seth has waaaay more options but his low stun stamina and Goukens high stun, higher stamina, and high damage output gives him the advantage on paper.
Gouken can’t be safe jumped as lp/mp/ex Kongo beats safe jump attempts and DWU weakens Seth’s auto-pilot options and may even get him punished .
Gouken is a sitting duck without meter, and all of his reversals gets him punished if Seth just sees what wake up option Gouken chooses.
Gouken loses if he doesn’t have meter and can’t keep Seth out or if he holds down back too much.
Seth loses if he gives up 2-3 mistakes.
If the Seth player is good this M/U should feel pretty even and if you can’t keep him off you in Seth’s favor.
Seth empty jumping is also a problem since he has the SPD. Also, his focus attack is quite good at evading Gouken’s fireballs. Since you said that Seth has more options, wouldn’t you say that its Seth’s match to lose? As in, Gouken will only get his major damage if Seth makes mistakes?
