If you’ve been paying attention to ANYTHING I’ve even posted regarding buffing Gouken it’s been the fact that he lacks and offensive reversal. And he needs one… worst case scenario to avoid being thrown all over the fucking place. This is the very reason why he hasn’t moved up in the tiers much in each version b/c he cant’ do shit when he pressured and he doesn’t have meter.
NG1313 - gave different ways to beat throws… and they all involve running away or pose great risk to getting your ass blown up. Counter hit beats jumping and tech… and Gouken’s back dash isn’t that great.
I guess I’ll let you all play the game another 5 years to figure that out… it may help you out ALOT.
For the record… I never suggested he get a DP… just for tatsu to hit low and to be invincible to throws… He’s -100 frames on whiff or block for the love of God.
If tatsu is invincible to throws you now have a 50/50 game to reversal with kongo OR tatsu b/c they have to guess hit or throw just like you… or do nothing… which makes back dashing stronger by default b/c sometimes they will just stop pressing buttons to see what you will do. Right now that’s just not the case…

Side note: Even if I said give him a damn dp for tatsu… tatsu’s recovery is probably the most punishable move on the game… including Ultras… but folk screaming that’s broken… and then turn around and say they want kongo and air parry to be immune to armor break so they can kongo everything known to man, even when they wake up… Kongo rules… never-mind the fact that the recovery is pretty short, he doesn’t leave his feet, or move in any direction… but This shit should be buffed to beat EVERYTHING??? yet… tatsu hitting low and beating throws is OP??.. get a fucking life.
there’s no purpose in making say regular tasus throw invincible. you could just well do a neutral jump if you were actually in fact willing to pull a regular tatsu simply as a counter to a throw attempt.
dash back from a throw attempt. then you can dash forward throw, jump forward, HK flip forward, f+MP (maybe?), EX or LP Kongo, cr.LK->LP Palm/HK Tatsu if the opponent didn’t time his throw attempt ideally, etc etc… but u have to guess right on when to throw, just as the opponent has to guess right against gouken sometimes, as he too is taking a risk even though it might be small, when he attacks gouken.
nj is not safe against a standard throw. anybody with an uppercut is going to just knock you out of the sky.
pretty sure backdash isn’t safe either.
which leaves you with tech. And considering that cr.mk is -5 on block, that doesn’t leave you in the best of positions if they just watch your wakeup.
i know nj isn’t safe (but the opponent will need to time his throw attempt perfectly however), but i believe back dash i 0/0 for both on a throw attempt (not crouching jabs/os hit confirms).
@climaxter. yup. And if you neutral jump and they forward throw they recover in time to punish you… this is for EVERY character.
Making tatsu invincible to throw does a lot for standard throw and command grab… but folk got to get their mind outta gear S to grasp it.
@NG1313- Netural Jump is NOT a reliable wake up option. Almost every character has a way to hit confirm you to hell and you’ll get combo’d before you can leave the ground. Play a good Abel and try to nj… you’ll stop after a while and they they will start throwing you.
You want a throw invincible move to encourage them to strike you, and you want a strike invincible move to encourage them to throw you. Then when you get meter, Gouken would then have the OH SHIT factor, instead of lemme just grab this MF or bait his EX Tatsu that can be low profiled or safe jumped.
Changes that are implemented should encourage more thoughtful play for everyone…
Buffing Kongo to be immune to armor breakers, just puts pretty much anyone with out a command grab at Goukens mercy on wake up… and don’t let me get started on the request to have air parry immune with a 4 frame landing too…

Let’s take Ryu for example… if Kongo was immune to armor break what would/could he do??? None of his reversals would work, EX Tatsu would get owned… lp kongo would beat - cr. lp, cr. mp, srk, and crouch tech… if air parry was included… you could just knock him down and air parry anything he does… and all of this would come with almost no risk to Gouken… oh he MIGHT get thrown, but that would take someone to do stand throw which would open them up to cr. lk > palm or sweep. THAT shit is WAAAAAY to strong considering what we already do with dive kicks now… Same for pretty much any other character without a command grab… I don’t want to see Gouken just parrying everything and kongo-ing everything else… while they hold down back or wait to see what he does… That’s the same thing that we complain about now.
With Buffs and people about to have 2 Ultras Gouken will need an OFFENSIVE get-the-fuck-off-me-move or he’s not going to fare very well… that’s just the reality of it.
I see no reason to further explain this… on a lighter note…

anyway, no i don’t think ex kongo would be too powerful, because it requires AN INITIATIVE FROM THE OPPONENT.
and us playing the game for 5 years before learning anything? 6 months ago, you or one of your friends, were in the “gouken frustration thread” - four years after the release of the initial sf4, and complained that ryu did a cr.lk on your wakeup and you went flying to the sky.

it’s in order to say, that i think ex kongo along with armor break immunity would need to get nerfed to 100 damage instead of 150 (throw damage begins from 130), and the opponent isn’t sent full screen away but half screen. this way we can still kongo as we can, but including armor breakers which are the MAIN ISSUE for gouken’s defense (unless you want the dp), but in compromise they’re not sent full screen away, and the damage they take is less than their throw could have dealt to us. also gouken’s throw hurt box would have to be expanded.

I don’t think an offensive reversal is necessary from a game design standpoint, because you could argue that everyone who lacks one should have one. But at the point, those who already have an offensive reversal aren’t much different from those who now just gained it. The variety of characters become more greyer.
