Tatsunoko vs Capcom had good migration to semi anime 3D. Though since there you face popular anime franchises characters, that design would fit better there.
In contrast MvC3 design followed more western design and I didnt like it
I’d say every character except for Makoto is designed for the male audience members. Tonnes of skin tight clothing, bare midriffs, nonsensical outfits, very little instances of pants, goddamn fucking high heels on Rose and Viper. Juri and Makoto are generally their best female designs due to Juri have the fist actual instance of an athletic build/muscle tone and Mak’s gi. Udon even needed to devote a page to explaining the Ibuki wears special ninja underwear thanks to her weird design for medieval fetishists.
His proportions look like a midway between SF2 and Alpha to me. Hands still pretty large, biceps size of his head (even taking into account perspective), feet still look big.
SF3 “flopped” because the fighting game market was saturated at the time of its release, the mainstream was moving on to the next big thing also in the mid-late 90s (RTS games), arcades were beginning to die, AND it couldn’t compete with the familiar characters in Alpha 3 which was much more welcoming to those who played SF2. However truth be told, SF3 is the ZENITH of 2D fighting games when it comes to gameplay and animation IMO. All SF3 needed to be PERFECTION was a 4th Strike with 4-6 returning SF2/Alpha characters (preferably the ones I like).
There is a middle road between the revolution of SF3 and the stagnation of SF4, a balance can be struck.
I don’t think 3rd strike would have been popular even if it did have more returning characters. That game just came at the wrong time in arcades (other popular SF and Capcom games existing, arcades not mattering as much overall) and was released for the wrong platforms on consoles.
Any way if we do only get 16 -20 characters at launch, I hope at least 5 are new comers.
I swear people forget 3S top 8 at Evo was almost always Chun/Ken/Yun. It was so boring at high level unless you were in Japan where you had a few character specialist.
Note the “and animation” part. I know SF3 is flawed, it isn’t even my favorite SF game, let alone favorite 2D fighting game. But SF3 had a great balance of tight gameplay and fluid animation, both of which have aged impressively. My point being is that it is a fine example of 2D fighting games (as a whole) at their near-full potential.
I think people crap on SF4 too much. SF3 was great. SF4 is great too. Just because the walk speeds are slower and a comeback mechanic exists and parries are not as robust doesn’t mean it’s total shit, but you would think that upon reading some peoples’ posts.
One thing I hate about the art direction of SFIV and by the looks SFV is how bulky the chars are, apparently people think its cool for them all to look like body builders, even Dhalsim etc. I hate it. He should be skinny like in SFII same with Sagat, Thai kickboxers have a unique skinnyish but solid kinda build to them that SFII Sagat captured perfectly.
I know this wont change as Capcom/the art team seems to have a hard on for big muscle dudes. They even did it with the HD Remix sprites to a lesser extent.
I’m months late to this. But I don’t acknowledge this at all!
3s balance is like vast majority 5-5s or 6-4s outside the very ends - Chun on one end, and Remy Sean Twelve on the other. Basically 3s is a pretty balanced game except it has one really good character and three super bad ones. And the top 10 or so characters can win vs Chun even if they don’t have even matchups vs her. Also I think skill gap between players comes into play much more than other games. It’s not like SF2 or 4 where a bad match can mean time to counterpick. I think peoples perception of 3s balance is based in like 2007 which imo is super outdated.
The zoning game is not “inferior.” Fireballs are purposefully bad and that’s it. People need to get over this silly notion that somehow fireball long range zoning is automatically good and that a game having weak fireball zoning is a weakness in the game. It’s not, it’s just a different game which values a different range of interaction. It’s like saying KOF has a weakness that it isn’t more like SF2. It’s not a weakness, it’s just different.
Honestly the only thing I think is bad about 3s is that some moves are punishable on hit. It’s dumb that as Chun I can hold forward and if Necro has the audacity to use his standing fierce or low forward buttons I can get hit by them then punish with super.
Besides that I think it’s great. I don’t have problems with any design decision in 3s. It could be more balanced but the imbalance is overstated and a lot of games could be more balanced. It’s clearly the best fighting game ever made in my book. Which is fine if people don’t agree, just how I feel about it.
