New fighting games today... too 'chain' heavy?

…33hit combo huh? ummm i play gg seriously with Venom, Sol, and Bridget and I dont know why you want that many hits, that makes no sense. If the game was like that I would ask the opponent to make me sandwhich or something while hes being comboed, lol. I would do 33 hits in a combo if i was trying to show off with chipp or something. FYI sol cant rly do a 33 hit combo, the opponent would be at like 5% life by like the 20th hit anyway. Why do 33 hits with Sol when i could just S,2hs, VV Rc, run up s, 2hs, j.k, Cleanhit Sidewinder, relaunch into foolishness for more than half your life or more depending how much the guard gauge is build up.Comparing gg and cvs2 as far as links doesnt rly make sense, timing is different. Thats like me saying" Well cvs2 players do CC combos in A groove that consist of the same move repeately until the bar empties and cant even do decent combos in gg. Mind you A groove combos can go 60+ hits.

I can play both games so that doesnt even mean anything to me, but maybe your talking about ppl that play gg and dont play cvs2 that all. Did anyone forget frcs? that stuff is strict, try doing combos with Venom, johnny, Axl, I-no., etc..... without learning their frcs and see what happens. knowing that and not knowing that is a big difference.

Whoevever thinks doing p,k,s,hs super is a good combo is my hero cuz that is awesome combo, i wish i could link that sobs.

Julia Tekken combo look so dumb lol, launcher into elbow, elbow, elbow… (looks at watch) ha,

It’s just the new trend in fighting games. The last game that’s come out to really play anything like the old SF we know (as far as ground game is concerned) is CVS2. I guess you could count 3rd Strike since it never really got popular in the US until 2004. At least not number one 2d fighter in the country.

I say the older games that we all enjoy will last long enough for fans and newer people to enjoy those games competitively.

He’s EXAGGERATING, he just fucking chose a random number.

No it isn’t. Not even slightly. You’ve completely missed the point entirely. My god. I can’t even begin to fathom how you can say that those two analogies are even slightly similar. Wow.

What the hell. Yes, that’s exactly the point, FRCs are harder than links in CvS2.

You don’t jump up, start playing GG and immediately target f/rc’s as your primary objective though. You try and figure out what works. 5P, 5K, 5S, special does because the system of the game allows it. The point of this thread is the mechanics of ‘chain’ versus ‘old school’. Don’t know why a lot of people have been bringing up difficulty.

As to whether links or FRC’s are harder, probably depends on who you ask.

i dont think iv ever seen so much unfounded bullshit in one 2d thread b4
mission complete

Heh. Thank God RC’s are hella easy compared to FRCs, since Faust only really has decent RCs.

Go go go 2P -> 2K -> 2S -> 236S -> RC -> 5K -> JC -> K -> K-> S-> HS!

fuck number conventions more than anything.

cross up short->link jab->link jab->link cr. short>link cr. forwardXX lvl 3 tiger raid, bitch!!

^ thats a one frame link noob.

smart ppl stop at c.short. also the s.jabs are chained.

well i’m beast so i do beastly things. i actually wait for the jabs to finish so i can link them, godlike

I don’t really like the “extremely free-chain” approach (and fly around everywhere) that is getting mainstream in most new 2d fighters. It’s not like I think they are bad games (in fact, I consider GG and MB to be really good and interesting, and I enjoy playingthem) nor it’s a “skill” matter, since I believe that both type of games require lots of skill.
It’s just that I don’t like the feel of that, and on top of that it doesn’t look good. That’s what I feel about Tekken juggles, btw.
And that’s why I also hate most of custom-combo shit in “old school” games. I consider this kind of stuff “anti-stylish” aesthetically.
The only game that nailed the freechiaining right was the Vampire series IMHO. Somewhat limited, and doesn’t look as bad thanks to the character design.
What I really like about 3s target combos, in example, is that they make sense visually. The animation of each consecutive attack flow nicely into each other (and there are actually some specific animation that can’t be seen anywhere else!). 5H into 2D just looks ugly, no matter what. I said that most cc style stuff blows for the same reason. Stuff like Yang’ SA3 (or Rose Soul Illusion) is acceptable though since the combo ability is expanded by adding hits, not by making the animation flow look retarded.
And the flying around, triple jump, airdashes stuff is another thing I don’t really like to see. It can fit some superhero characters, but that’s it. It’s too much of a DBZ approach (you don’t know how I felt when I found about airdashes in HnK, being a fan of the HnK series over the DBZ series and more “ground based, still somewhat human” fights were one of the reasons).
Of course all of this is not a decisive factor in judging and liking a game (if it was, I wouldn’t enjoy GG and MB like I do), but sure I like old school look and feel better.

So…

…this is awesome news to me. Completely new games, old school basic mechanics, 3s inspired. I hope the game turns out well. Also, while taking inspiration from 3s system, it addresses two of its biggest issues: no more meter builiding for whiffed moves (yay!) and parry equivalent on button means parry whiff animations -> serious stop to option parry spamming (double yay!)
I really have high hopes for this game.

They don’t turn me off, I’ll play any fighter as long as its actually fun and has a good fighting system behind it. They turn off those that have yet to play a fighting game at all, because there’s all that technical shit they have to learn to really start playing. I think a good remedy for this is to do what Virtua fighter 4: evolution did with their training mode; step by step lessons on pretty much every nuance the game presents to the players. Then they can utilize that knowledge in actual gameplay against the cpu and real people.

The thing with us oldschoolers is that we were in this shit since SF2, pretty much. We were able to utilize what we learned there in learning every fighter that came out thereafter, and so on and so forth…every fighter is relatable to every other fighter to some extent. we’re always going to have the advantage, what we need to do is be willing to teach…problem is, what good is teaching if the new kids don’t want to learn?

wow completely missed that post. Sounds like some good stuff

Budokai ruined my DBZ…

Punch, Punch,Punch + Kamahe?

…that went well.

ummmm nooooo…sagat s.jabs are linked, not chained.

And as far as the topic goes i kinda think that a lot of games are too chain heavy.

Too bad noone in the US is going to bother with BF, though I’m just as intrigued by the game as everyone else.

:\

that’s one of the most objective, non-fanboy posts I’ve seen. I agree with you pal.

I know he was exaggerating, i was just having fun with it so sue me. Hey when someone posts something online its not my job to sit around wondering " hmm what did he mean by that?"

Honestly that second point was vague (forgive me i was alittle tired), ill denounce it, cuz the other guys point didnt make that much sense either since these are 2 completely different games. Didnt mean to turn this into a “which game is better or harder”.

I agree that newer games are way more chain heavy. For me, its fun to look a long crazy flashy combos, and chains help with that.

As for the mainstream, its strange cuz if they see a long chain combo, they will automatically think there awesome at the game. Its a way of getting new ppl in. Honestly, they just wanna win. Small damaging combos almost work better for ppl newer to a game, which is why ppl who jump into soul cailbur like it so much.

LOL at the DBZ budokai post, I feel your pain bro. The worse thing was when trying to kamehameha from far away, you had to punch the air 4 to 5 times b4 anything would come out.

Anyone know if Bf is coming out on console? Wow didnt know the game was like that, as long the game has enough to keep me entertained ill have no complaints. Im the kind of person the will try every game at least once errr cough Unlimited Saga and Spectral Vs. Generation cough I just dont wanna be scarred for life because i was being optimistic.

Remember for every “chain” there is a “link” that keeps them together, lol.

Not everyone likes Marvel Vs Capcom 2 though.

On block, those strings may be safe…but with considerable amount of experience, you can react to attacks between the strings and counter them there instead of blocking. This requires significant knowledge of what strings players might use and when to counter.

I don’t like people that oversimplify games by saying “just do this block string and you win”. Especially the ones that say something like “Athena in kof is all about crouch C into psychoball”, which would get you countered very easily for 80%+ damage combos if you kept diong it.

I agree that a lot of these new games have to much shit going on to just in a play like SFII or even III. I mean i missed GGXX/ due to ym Ps2 breaking and now its fixed but I’m passing up AC because my RC/FRC skill is gone and it was hell learning it in the first place and they went and added all these techs and properties that complicate the game on top every that was introed in GGX and onwords. Bursts, IADs, RC/FRCs Dead Angles, Dusts, Air dashes, and now slash backs, slides (Replacing ground bounces) and whatever the hell they decied was a weird enough name for the EX moves. what did they end up calling those?

Basic point is its a lot of shit to learn to just even begin competing. I cant count how many of my friends walked out on me just trying to explain the basic mechanics of the game much less the complicated shit. but i through in SFIII taught em a few moves and they dug it even i had to play soft for them get to a handle on the game. Hell my dad at age 47 will play SFIII with me some when i drop by the house (His last game was Astroids) to play with my bro but he cant follow GG to save his life and its the same for a lot people not weened on shit loads of Anime.
