New fighting game releases vs tournament game selection

Maybe people just really like the menu!

Just to throw a non hate based topic of discussion out there.
Another subject that has grown in the last year is the issue of stream time in both weekend long and one day events. Even SF4 and MVC3 have had some heated debates over which game to stream at certain venues with only two game options. Majors for the most part have been going with the plan of MVC3 one day SF4 on the other day and cramming an hour or two of something else in where they can. So even as a 3rd Capcom game where does SFxT fit into this mix especially if the gem system turns out to be time consuming? and what happens to MK9 at that point?

Sorry, i refuse to play any fighting game that doesn’t use six buttons arranged in a pyramid

not only is it ERGONOMIC, it just makes the most sense.

seriously think about it. your game is going to be really shallow if you don’t have more than two types of light attacks, but if there are four or more then it’s obviously just catering to casual players who like button-mashing so three is the perfect number, and of course you should have them all in a row so they go at the bottom: A, B, C. then you need your heavy attacks too and those can come from two different sides to create more mindgames so you have your left swing (L) and your right swing ® buttons which are positioned above the weak attacks because duhhh, they’re more powerful. plus the special move button S should go at the top because it’s the most important one.

that’s how you make a deep fighitng game.

even more of an ergonomic layouthttp://i.imgur.com/Ew3jH.png

you can tell it’s made for shmups because together the buttons form a tiny jet fighter

I want to say BlazBlue is super boring but I know a bunch of the usual people are going to be on my ass like I’m Ishiwatari so I’ll settle for: BlazBlue is a disappointment after GGAC.

So what problems does BlazBlue have in your opinion, if any?

3 Attak buttenz, omg, n00b frendlii!
Dr1ve iz 4 scrubs!
ANIMUUUUUUUUUU!!!

Loliconprevertz!

I actually love BB, but some reasons people give for not liking it are retarded.

As for preferring GG, I appreciate that. I played GG up to XX#R and overall I think it’s a better game, but BB has some cool stuff and I really like some of the characters. Also, drive is a nice system to widen the gap between characters.

Rewarding defensive play over agressive play comes to mind.
I personally dislike that thing where you carry over the momentum of your dash to your normals.
Only one version so far doesn’t have a silly Carl infinite reset setup that kills anyone that doesn’t have 1f reversals.
Kinda slow and floaty.

CSE looks nice though, seems like it fixed all the retardation from CS1 and CS2. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

As an aside, the Drive system allows BB to have some of the more excentric character designs in current fighting games, which I think anybody can appreciate. I’m kind of sad that they nerfed Soul Eater and Frost Bite over the course of the new revisions to the point where they almost don’t do shit anymore, but those just weren’t the most interesting ones anyway.

Also even the most gameplay-focused players can admit the presentation of the game does get obnoxious at times, and while that shouldn’t be filed as a “legitimate” concern about the game, it does detract from its general appeal.

Carrying dash momentum is maybe in more games than you realise, GG has it, so does Marvel, AH3, etc.

I must admit, I haven’t been following CSE since AH3 takes up most of my fighting game time now and I’m kinda pissed that CSE isn’t going to be another free download. I don’t give a shit about Relius and none of the other changes sound like disc release quality.

LA!

On topic: I’d like to see a Bleach DS 2nd tournament at Evo. Man I love that game, had a nice GG feel to it (for me) too.

I know it’s in those games too, and it’s the kind of mechanic that I can like in one game and dislike in another. In Blazblue I happen to dislike it.

It’s a good thing that CSE is a disk release honestly. The new stuff has been piling up since CS1 and frankly it’s going to solve many headaches for tournament organizers to just have a new disk.
It’s true the quality of new updates has been declining since CS. Only one new character, that’s very very unhype, regardless of the new quality of the metagame.

I know what you mean, but they could do a deluxe disc version with all the story mode shit that they better include (DLC characters that can’t be used in arcade mode is a joke), stages, intro, etc. AND Relius, and then have the patch version that just means you can play online with everyone else.

As much as I love BB, I honestly don’t know if I’ll be buying CSE, since I don’t have as much to for fighting games any more and UMVC3, AH3, Skullgirls, and so on will keep me very busy and I’m still very much happy with CS2.

imo this is because many people expected that BB would be like GGAC (my favorite FG of all time hands down) even when they stated many times that BB was going to be a very different beast, from the very inception of the game yoi can see that this can be considered as an antithesis of GGAC

well, no fighting game is perfect (maybe only GGAC and Tobal 2 and even they can be improved)
but right now, with many of the changes on BBCSEX im actually happy (Tager doesnt seems to be the worst character at the game  ), there are still some things that i would like to change, like throw tech windows reduced for example, and less hitstop, also there are some balance things that i would like them to adress (Ara, Tager being the resident low tier and usually having a lack of tools to compensate his weakeness) or at least know what is the train of thoughts behind of them
but as i said, BB is basically an antithesis of GG, that is why you see that even they share a lot of aspects (mechanics, concepts) the way that both are played differ vastly
perhaps one of the reasons of why i really lie BB its because unlike others i actually enjoy what it offers and what make it unique instead of comparing it to the previous game wich btw, they intentionally are contrasting

see this by the bussines perspective

they gave BBCS2 for free, even when more than probable, the major part of the BBCS players (wich btw arent near at the numbers of BBCT) bought all the dlc chars, in an optimistic way of thinking lets say that around 30% of the population bought DLC chars (very optimistic imo), with something like the 20% of them buying all of them, 30% buying to, and the rest buying only one, there is no way that they can get a good profit that way.

i also would love to get BBCSEX as a DLC patch, i would gladly paid for it ala SSF4AE, but i know that its not profitable in the long run, there is a limit on how much they can give, one maybe 2 times imo

dunno, i always found more comfortable with the DLCs for tournaments instead of new disks, that way i only have to bought 10 copies of BBCS, and buy the dlc chars on 2 accounts and share them among the 10 ps3
that way was only (4010) at the begining and then (242) making only an inverion of only 448 between CS and CS2
in the case that it were a disk it would have been 4010 at the begining and 4010 again making it 800 between both versions

GGXX to GGXX#R only had one char, GGXXS to GGAC had none

I don’t understand dead frog last post at all.

I see what you’re saying, but the difference between CT and CS felt worthy of being a “new game” and they were very transparent about updating CS to CS2, which I thought was nice and honorable, we get the balance patch for free, and the characters cost us more as they weren’t even finished when CS came out on console. Maybe they will do something similar for CSE to CSE2 (or whatever?) but one more character does feel kinda lame.

I know Guilty Gear didn’t always add many or any characters, but their roster was much bigger when that started happening, BB is still tiny.

i wouldn’t be surprised when they announce and release at least 2 more chars, maybe 3

in number maybe, and still with way more variety than many other fighting games with larger roster when it comes of gameplay, not to mention that it has a good size of tournament viable chars since CS, and with CS2 and CSEX it seems that the balance its getting better

I played the shit out of GG with players that were actually good and I’ll have to agree with one of the above comments.

BB was a disappointment after GG.

To this day I still can’t sit down with that game for more than an hour. I’ve tried sitting in training mode, challenge mode, playing with people that know the game. I just get one giant feeling of meh the whole time. I can’t even put it into words it’s just that everything feels so floaty. I also dislike the loooooong ass combos. GG had long combos, but they weren’t exactly bnb’s. In gg you CHed into a fat punish and got good oki off it. In BB I just see people fishing for CH to go for an hour long combo. I might be terribly wrong considering I don’t know too much about BB.

When BB was announced I was soooo hype considering the gg drought and timely death. I’m hoping one day I’ll end up sitting down with it and liking it for once but it just doesn’t feel as solid as GG was.

tl;dr
bb damn sure isn’t gg (though it’s not supposed to be)

edit: chaos code looks fucking gdlk

which one, man??
also you’re awesome and you’re my signature now

I only meant tiny in comparison to GG, but yes, the variety is there and one of the best things about the game. No two characters feel alike. I really do hope they include more new faces in CSE otherwise I’m gonna find it hard to justify the cost, unless its £18 again like CS.

Okay it came up twice again today so I’m going to keep bumping this thread until people this issue get some kind of serious discussion. Don’t act like this shit snuck up on you when it happens.

  1. Front page article by D3V which I agree 95% besides the fact that it is logistically impossible to fit all of the new games in to the current format and at some point cannibalism will occur in the community. I mean I completely agrees with growing your scene, I was running around NEC this weekend trying to round up and recruit KOF players, but at some point one game is going to lose that last spot at EVO to another game and that is when the salt will kick in.

  2. You could hear it starting to kick in with people at NEC in side conversations, there was already a full card of games plus playable versions of the new soul Calibur and TTT2. EVO is getting closer and someone is going to be salty but for the most part I still feel like people aren’t talking about it.

Speaking of new releases… can someone give me a list of new releases for 2012? All i know is SFvsTEKKEN. I know thats not the only game coming out for 2012.
