Actually Donnie starred in the Chen Zhen tv series right after that movie was made.
I do love my martial arts movies, but a few gripes I have with this:
First off, Fist of Legend was a remake of Bruce Lee’s Fist of Fury. Is this why he’s wearing the black mask/Kato costume? Plus the good ol’ WATAAAH!?
I’m getting tired of constantly seeing China making movies about Japanese/Western imperialism

I loved Fist of Legend and Ip Man, so I’m definitely looking forward to this

if theres 1 thing i hate its wires and all the bitch shit they bring (looks at cthd)kung fu movies at its best are hardcore, none of that softcore wire bs. look at the fights of ip man 1 against the school, look at fist of legend. those the kind of fights that actually amount to something. none of that slow mo bs wire movies. fuck that shit. and fuck everybody that likes that kind of shit.

but its a donnie yen movie and he is one of my favorite actor/directors.
I kinda agree Ip Man 2 was godawful. But it wasn’t because of Donnie Yen, it was because it was Rocky 4(…with martial artist vs a boxer wtf).
That said, this movie looks pretty good, definitely going to check it out.
it was more than that, the choreography was fucked up. this is the most important aspect of a kng fu movie. as good as a story you give a movie, if the choreography is bs the movie is bs. ip man 2 fucked up in this aspect, added wire (wtf) and had those bs ass slow motions parts that made no fucking sense.
also i pretty much said ip man 2 sucked from the start. most people didnt agree, and now they do? took yall long enough to see what kind of shit it was.
There is a time & place for wire-fu films this one doesn’t need excessive wires…Its ok to enhance the fights with wires like they did w/ Fist of Legends but this one looks a lot of unrealistic bullshit…Movie also wants to add some drama bullshit to it too which i dont think is needed…
Time will tell i guess, would have been cool to have Jet Li as the main though, but i think Sammo was the best Bruce Lee imitator by far…He didnt look like him but he had that “Fist of Fury” like Bruce Lee gots in his films…

sammo is cool as fuck, especially the old school sammo from my lucky stars and enter the fat dragon times. best kung fu flicks are from the late 80’s and early 90’s imo. add some bruce lee and some old school 70’s flicks and thats pretty much it. and some new ones like ip man and tom yong goon and ong bak. but the last 2 sucked in acting and story, though the fights outclassed pretty much everything else.
also the use of wires is subtle in fist of legend, and it still sucked (would have been better withoput wires). but cthd or ip man 2 wiring is straight gay.
I didn’t think that ip man 2 was that bad, wasn’t as good as 1 for sure but I wouldn’t call it god awful.
Obviously since ip man and chen zhen is supposed to be based on real life people they should try to keep the wire work limited (if none at all). But hongkong loves to make everything over the top so thats probably what we’ll get.
I’ll still definitely give this a shot though.

You sir got good taste but my faves are the 70s then 80s, & then upto mid 90s, everything else really sucked except for maybe a couple that you named…

Ip Man 1 was awesome. I love that scene when he fights those black belts and he’s chain-punching and breaking bitches bones left, right and center. Some inspiring shit. I didn’t like Ip Man 2 that much but I liked the end boxing scene. Always wanted to see boxing vs kung fu.
I’ll be looking forward to this.
I don’t have a probelm with wirework when it is used to actually enhance and push the boundries of a movie. Whether it be comedic(Deadly China Hero, Taichi Master) or serious (Fist of Legend, Danny the Dog) it can be really great. Especially anything done By Yuen Woo Ping, he can do campy and serious being the man responsible for some of my favorites like Iron Monkey and the Matrix.
Of course it can go real badly and it usually involves hidding the actual deficiencies of the people doing the fighting, which in turn doesn’t even really hide it, it just makes it more obvious. Any Charlies Angel’s movie, and Crouching Tiger hidden dragon had really goofy wire work, but I blame the later on Ang Lee and his weird ass style of directing.
That being said, a movie can have shitty wire fu or non at all and still be good or bad regardless.
And people complaining about Japanese villians in Chinese movies? Seriously? That’s like their version of the nazi’s irl. Also Sammo jobbing to some shitty boxer after fighting Donnie Yen to a standstill on a table made zero sense.
