I got the game and I love it!
The English doesn’t bother me too much since they don’t talk that much, just grunt out special moves and win quotes, stuff like that. So long as it’s better than KOF Maximum Impact in English I could care less. But if it’s that big a deal, import I suppose.
One of the best things about it is that the look of it reminds me so much of the manga instead of the anime, the excess detail that Toriyama used when he drew mountains and scenery that was lost in the anime is in this game. I do wish that Piccolo had 4 fingers on each hand like he does in the manga instead of 5 like he does in the anime, but no big.
Original mode is Arcade mode, what we are all used to. Played and beat it with Trunks, it seems like it’s based on the Cell Saga mostly, everyone I fought was from the Cell Saga, except for Freezer(Frieza in the US). Cell is the final boss. Continues are fast when you lose if you just select ‘retry,’ doesn’t seem like it loads too much.
The command lists are in the game and not in the booklet, you can pause the game and look it up whenever.
I saw Meteo Attacks in the game, some characters have it! What the Famicon DBZ2 game dubbed Meteo attacks was when a character kicked your character very high, then appeared above him and kicked him away, and so on and so on.
Hadoukens, shoryukens, throws, combos, it’s all here! Plus flying and dodging. You can dash just like Capcom games, hit forward twice, but there’s a button that will do it for you, but I’m more used to dashing the other way.
Seems like there’s some hidden stuff. On one stage I broke something and I saw an icon of that super deformed version of Superman from Toriyama’s first manga Dr. Slump. I think he’s called Supper Man. Lol, they’ve been checking around the net and reading all of these Goku vs. Superman Prime debates I bet. Well, that’s what they think of Superman.
While playing I thought the music sounded very SFEX like, but better. Then when I beat it I knew why, Akira Nishitani and his company Arika also worked on this game! So it has at least 2 people who worked on Street Fighter II in this game - Akira Nishitani and Noritaka Funamizu! Don’t worry, it’s MUCH better than SF EX, shoot, I wish SF EX was more like this game.
In customize mode you can customize a character. So I picked Trunks - my favorite - and named him ‘SANO’ naturally, at least for now - at any point in time I can change his name. Not a lot was available to me at this time for me to customize with, so I gave him a red jacket.
After this with your customized character there’s a Survival Mode where you have to beat 7 characters to get 7 Dragon Balls. Once you do that you can wish for something, don’t know what though. I only beat 3 characters and you know who, Goku showed up and kicked my ass, ack! So I have no balls… Dragon Balls that is… but while I was playing you win stuff from beating opponents like more health and stuff, something like Street Fighter Zero(Alpha) 3 World Tour Mode.
Playing with a Mas arcade stick like I always do with fighters. At first I was going to change the controls around, but I got used to it pretty easily after I gave it a try. A block button and a jump button take getting used to since it’s not in my SF nature but nothing too bad.
Man I wonder about all of the SF moves this game has. So far I saw Android 16 bust out a fake Zangief’s Final Atomic Buster.
Having a blast! It reminds me so much of the goodness that was Dragon Ball Z 2 on the old Famicon. Heck it reminds me of even that 2D DBZ Arcade game, which wasn’t as good but it gave me that arcade playing experience, and that’s how I feel like when I play this game, like I’m at the arcades. Way to early for me to give it any kind of rating, but I really like it. If you’re like me and more used to playing 2D fighters instead of 3D ones you will feel right at home playing this.
I’d play some more tonight but if you know me it’s comic book day, off to reading some funny books before I hit the hay…
