Net Code Report for KOF 13

This is sad. I’ve been looking forward to playing this game online too but I just recently got the game and everyone’s gone! Anyone from the US, So cal region get consistent good matches?

I feel bad when my KOF friends are on and I’m not playing it. KOF is so sophisticated that it’s hard to play with any sense at all when you can’t combo at will or stuff jump-ins. I mean, SF4 is slow enough to react to and everyone for the most part has one jump. Combos are simply a matter of adjusting the timing on links. KOF has quick hit confirms and 6 different jumps that all have to be punished differently depending on the character. I can’t play proper KOF when I’m defenseless against pressure and running into lightening fast ex fireballs that I can react to offline.

I can’t play a friend of mine who lives in the same building, a few apartments over.

That is all.

If you live in Socal, stop trying to play online, and go play people in person. Socal has the largest, most skilled KOF 13 scene in the country.

That’s like having 9 models that want to fuck you, but you decide to search for BBW porn on a 56k connection.

So true

So is this game dead online?

seems like it’s been dead for months. me thinking it’s like that or you noticing it now could both be coincidences and we’re both wrong, but unless i want to practice a certain thing in training mode, most of the time my experience goes like this:

  1. warm up in practice mode
  2. spam player match looking for lvl 3s or higher
  3. do the above in ranked matches
  4. repeat #2 for a while
  5. quit and turn on 3rd Strike

when i do find somebody, they’re either really good and they don’t want to play me extensively (either that or i realize i need to test more things in training mode before i should play this person again), or it’s somebody horrendous that nobody in their right mind would want to keep playing (think people with 2000+ ranked matches played who have shown zero effort in learning a single combo). also, this game needs an instant rematch option SO BADLY.

This game died online the moment everyone noticed how shit the online is and how the patch didn’t fix anything. XII all over again, move on.

So true. I don’t know why SNK is determined to shoot themselves in the foot with every release. Ironically the best fighting to come out in years has the worst netcode yet the worst fighter, SFxT, has a completely competent netcode with all the trimmings. Replays, lobbys, replay analyzer, and the biggest one for me, BEING ABLE TO BACK OUT OF A RANKED MATCH.

this game does have replays though. and you can frame advance, skip rounds, and enable damage/combo data for both players like in training mode. i don’t think lobbies are really needed since it’s not that popular of a game and it takes a long time to select characters and play matches, and therefore cycle players.

i feel like the netcode isn’t necessarily that much worse than other games. it’s more like the netcode is just picky as hell. when wireless with a certain isp would work passably with another game, this game doesn’t. you always need to be one step up in your setup here, and even then the game might not like it. imo the raw lack of players is a bigger problem since you can’t even really play the game whether the connection is good or bad, or find people that you do have a decent connection with. personally, i find it hard to believe that netcode is really the only reason a game that has a fair amount of positive exposure right now is a cemetery online.

Why wouldn’t the netcode alone be good enough reason for the game to not have players online? Seems like the only reason that would be necessary.

in theory, i agree with that. but in practice, to me it seems like most players would rather complain but continue to use it, rather than abandon it. and bad to mediocre players probably don’t care about quality of netplay provided that the game has enough mainstream presence, which i kinda figured KOF currently does thanks to evo and its frequent appearance in streams. vanilla MvC3 had terrible netcode but everybody kept playing that online. not exactly the same thing but… still.

I forgot you can save replays & everything else that comes along with it. Lobbies should be an online feature with every fighting game. Who doesn’t want to play with more than 1 friend at a time at least every now & then?

The netcode is probably just as good as UMvC3’s but this game is much stricter on inputs. That’s not an excuse for it be worse. That’s all the more reason for it to be better. The netcode is probably the biggest contributor to the game being dead online. I can’t even do day 1 Terry combos on 3-4 bars, and that’s what the game calls optimal. I’ll play UMvC3 online way before I play KoF online. At least I can do decent combos in UMvC3 because of how lenient it is but I literally can’t do anything online in KoF.

The bad to mediocre players like me are bad because if you don’t have an offline scene or have the time to make it out there you’re assed out. You can’t learn this game online at all.
